Treat me good…

I went out for lunch with ah^kam_koko’ when he was in town last Saturday because he was awarded the APC or in full, the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang (Outstanding Service Award) and he wanted to give me a treat with his prize money.

I must say that he deserves it even though he is only into his 4th year of teaching as he is truly passionate and dedicated in his work. Most young people (and old ones as well) who are posted to a desolate school like his would spend their time counting the days till they could get out of the place. To get there, one would need to catch a boat from Sibu and go some 3 hours or so upriver to a town called Song…and from there, one would need to take a small longboat up a tributary to the school, a couple of hours away – if  a boat is available, that is. His efforts have not gone unnoticed and he has been featured in a national tabloid here and also here.

No doubt he is doing a lot of good there despite it being so isolated and derelict but I do think if he could be posted to a better school in the bigger towns and cities, someone like him would be able to do a whole lot more with the quality of the students he would have. Hopefully, he’ll be given that opportunity soon…

We went to this place that I have featured many times before for the chicken rice…

…and we had the char siew (barbecued pork) and roast pork…

…as well as the roast duck and roast chicken…

…and the stewed eggs…

It was indeed a hearty lunch and the whole thing inclusive of drinks totalled RM18.00 only. It wouldn’t be that cheap, that’s for sure, if I had taken him to one of those classier high end cafes but I did not want him to spend a huge chunk of his money unnecessarily. After all, it was a very delightful lunch – the food was good and there was so much for just the two of us…and young people should be a bit more prudent and save whatever they can to use for any beneficial purposes that may crop up in their lives. After all, they’ve only just begun and they have a long long way to go…

After lunch, he wanted to go for dessert and we went here for the jelly pisang and the banana cake with ice cream…and the bill for the two items came up to RM15.00 which was almost the same as all that food (minus the drinks) that we had for lunch earlier. Ah well, he insisted…so I just let him have the pleasure of giving me a real good treat. Hehehehehe!!!!

Well, thanks a lot, ah^kam_koko’ , and congratulations on your award. Keep up the good work and all the best in whatever you undertake in the years ahead.

LOL!!! I love bacon too…and ham….and smoked duck breast…and… Oh dear! LOL!!! 😀

  2. OMG! look who’s at #1 at this very minute?! you did it! Hooray!

Yes, enjoying a comfortable lead now, thanks to you and everybody. Bless you all! 🙂

  3. hahaha….I hope it’s my 4 clicks that did it!

But let’s not rest on our laurels now… Keep clicking! 😉

  4. ohhh that’s really a hearty meal! i love siew yuk and char siew! 😀

    It certainly was. I enjoyed that a lot… 🙂

  5. Awww~~ Thanks, Arthur!
I actually wanted to spend up to RM100 with you because you are so special to me. Money is nothing compared to the good people it is shared with.
I’m glad you took me to quality places at quality prices! My fav! =D

Yes, no point spending on class and style, more worth it where the taste is great. Besides, it’s always the thought that counts… 😉

  6. You are so blessed… always have friends coming by to treat you! :)) Congratulations to your friend on being awarded… APC

Thank you on his behalf. Ah well, what goes around comes around… Works both ways. 😉

  7. Congrats to your friend! Teachers are generally underpaid and under appreciated. They also get kids too late. Education should start with parents before children are born and include so many things – not just academics – but how to raise a healthy and emotionally intelligent child.

Yes, I think some churches do that too but not many will turn up – I guess everyone’s too busy with their own things – making money especially. Thanks on my friend’s behalf – we do hope there will be a lot more like him.

    1. shereen would like anything ‘black’ – just to quote u… ooo the lor nui, i can have just that with rice…

Yes, sometimes I would tapao…just the rice (very nice) and the eggs. Love it! 🙂

  8. wow, so nice, he give you a treat out of the money he got from the APC!! roast pork, char siew, roast duck and roast chicken!! surely a lavish lunch huh?? hahaha..

Yes, it was a great lunch and the best part was that it was not pricey…unlike when eating at those high end cafes and restaurants. 😉

  9. very true!! i always complain drinks and desserts are now as expensive as the main dishes!! how can that ever be?? that’s why sometimes when i dine out, i rather not have drinks..

I guess you find that in the cafes and restaurants as people dining there will tend to sit for a long time – the whole night through…so there is little or no turnover so they cannot possibly survive on the money from the food alone.

  10. Congratulations to your teacher friend for winning the award. He truly must be passionate about his work. Being posted to such a rural place and yet the enthusiasm and dedication are still there after four years. Well deserved award & recognition, I would say.

Yes, for someone from a city, it is truly something to be admired. I know many who would refuse to show up at the place even, when posted…and they’re from some miserable small town or village themselves. Thanks on his behalf…

  11. Btw, clicked again on the link…702 and 556…not bad, not bad. When does the contest ends? I forgot to click yesterday :(…… I click again tmr, k? 🙂

Never mind. Doing ok… If not, I would send out the SOS calls, no worries… LOL!!! 😀

  12. All looks so good and it is that cheap. It is the thoughts that counts and the great company. Congratulations to your friend and keep up the good work.

Thanks. I’m sure he will… Cheap eh? Should be more or less the same in Kuching – not too expensive there either.

  13. Congrats to ah^kam_koko’.
You are right…not necessary to spend a lot to enjoy some good food. Why not pay lesser for quality food and can enjoy more meals too! =D hehe…

Thanks for the good wishes. Sometimes people pay for the glamour and the snob appeal – to each his own, I guess. Everyone is entitled to his or her own priorities.

  14. nice! we need more teachers like Ah Kam KoKo who goes against all odds to educate our children. Thumbs up to him!

Double thumbs up from me!!! Those like him are few and far between. Looking at those that we have around these days, I really wonder…

  15. Congrats to Ah Kam KoKo for winning the award, keep up the good work.

Ah, have a “peep” at his blog, he is very young and he doesn’t look like a teacher!! hhahah
Hard to believe he is teaching at the desolate school in Song, consider he is a young man, like you said, a lot can’t wait to get out from there. Bless him, our society need this type of teacher, hope one day he will post to a better place. 🙂

Yes, some would not even go…in the first place. I do hope he’ll get a good school in the town or city. He will be able to do a lot more with the kind of material that he will get – quite a waste there even though he’s doing those rural kids a lot of good in the meantime.

  16. I died a thousand death looking at the black eggs…argghhhhh!!! Congratulations to Ah kam KoKo for being awarded the anugerah cemerlang. It’s not an easy feat, that I know. Good looking guy too…wasted in the woods..lol!

Hahahahaha!!!! I know you would love those eggs, I already told Yee Ling that! Thanks on behalf of ahkamkoko. Still young, never mind! When he comes out, sure lots of girls waiting… Wonder if he’ll be in a piece of loin cloth like Tarzan. @.@!!! 😀

  17. I went to the SHARP link today and I just discovered that you joined the contest. I clicked the congratulation button. Hope you win.

I admire your friend’s dedication. We have same teachers like him in the Philippines. They are assigned to far flung areas but they still do their job. They teach their students with great dedication and sometimes help in things that are beyond their duty.

Yes, Ishmael. It’s been going on for a few days now. Thanks so much for your support.

Indeed, Sarawak is very big and some may have to go to very remote places. Such teachers should be appreciated…and if possible, appropriately rewarded as well.

  18. yay, good luck good luck again for the sharp sharp.. stay sharp, win sharp! BE SHARP!

my favorite dish, the char siew pork.. yummmmmm

Thanks, Isaac. Hmmm…I guess you will not be able to come over anytime soon anymore… Grounded already. Hope Janice is processing well. Take care of her, and you too! 😦

  19. Loh nui = black eggs? Hokkien? Haha, now Shereen can’t shake off that ‘black-love’ tag!!

Ah Kam Koko’s dedication deserves recognition – well done. Add my award, the VHT award – Very Hunky Teacher!

Oh! Someone beat me to being CLICK No. 777!! I wanted to be 777 leh, now I wait for 888.

…and 999…and 1111??? Humph!!! You cradle snatcher, you!!! Muahahahaha!!!! Lor nui = stewed/braised eggs lah… Don’t let your imagination run wild now! 😉

  20. wow your friend is really famous 🙂 the eggs look great but its name is eh.. kinda misleading 😛

    Latest: TomYam-licious

Oh? Why so? In what way is it misleading? They’re stewed or braised eggs or we call them “(phak) lor nui”, “phak lor” being a way to cook meat/duck using soy sauce five-spice powder and all…and the eggs are hardboiled and stewed/braised together.
