The sound of silence…

The other night, I was online on my PC when suddenly, one of the speakers went, “Poof!” Silence.

Gone case speakers

I tried to fiddle with it to bring it back to life but to no avail. It was as dead as a door nail.

Well, I guess the set of speakers had served its time. I cannot remember exactly when I bought the whole thing but if I’m not mistaken, my daughter was still around then – still in school…so that would be at least 5 or 6 years ago.

I went and dig out the old speakers that I had with the previous PC – an Acer original…

Old speaker 1

…that we bought when my daughter was still little and loved playing those games in cd-roms e.g. The Lion King (no internet access at the time). I loved playing that too! It was a whole lot of fun really, this I would have to admit. LOL!!!

I plugged in all the wires and connected the speakers to the system. Gee! I noticed that they were stereophonic…and there was a super bass control knob plus a sense-surround button.

Old speaker 2

When everything was ready, I switched on the power and holy Moses!!! I almost jumped out of my skin – it was so very loud and the quality of the sound was absolutely wonderful.

STP's desktop

The speakers were not too big and fitted in nicely into the available space on the table on both sides of the monitor.

In comparison, the conked-out speakers sounded like those RM10 one-band pocket radio that we used to listen to during our teenage days…while these re-commissioned ones sound superb – like a hi-fi or mini-compo (I wonder if the younger readers know what I’m talking about! LOL!!!). You can bet your bottom dollar that from now onwards, youtube will never be the same again! LOL!!!

  1. I find equipments of the older days are more durable and of better quality.

I think so too. Now they’re made to spoil once the warranty period is over… Tsk! Tsk! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ my dvd player…same la… just nice warranty period over… it KO-ed on me. 1 year. kapoot. Sobs! There goes my Saturday nite movie sessions… sobsob… mau beli new one oso fed up… cuz not the first time rosak just after warranty period over. Very boring! Feel like wasting money. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Opt to read to chill instead. SOBS!!!

They’re very smart these days. If everything so good, never spoil…how to make business like that? So must have stuff that will last till after the warranty period and then bye-bye. LOL!!!

  2. LOL… the old speaker went to speaker heaven liao ah? =.= Good la… now you can enjoy the new nice sound. LOL… and yea… I know what you’re tokking about… my father is still keeping his hi-fi radio and it’s still working. ๐Ÿ˜›

Ya…these days, they have MP3 or is it 4 already? Those wired things that they stick in their ears….

    1. Tak tau… these days is very digital era…everyone using it to listen to songs and whatnot using ipad and phones =.= I’m still using the old mp3+thumbdrive player… sound so-so oni…my dad kasi as my bday present5-6 years ago. LOL. Still working fine, so i dun bother buy new stuff.

I’ve NEVER listened to an MP3 before… So kuno, this old man. Last thingI listened to was my daughter’s discman sometime ago…Sobssss!!!!

  3. ps: While I love all these hi-tech surround system and what not, I still love those old records sound…nothing beats that… and I never fail to turn on those old records in my grandpa’s house whenever I go for a visit.

Wah…you so old school kah? LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ Aiyor…still got a player that works? Antique – certainly worth a lot of money.

    1. Got two, actually. My father have one, but rosak liao when I was 10 years old. It konked out playing ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. Needle patah or something. My father was saying that he wants to repair it, but dunno where to cari orang repair for him. Nobody knows how to repair it liao.=.=. LOL… my grandpa punya still working, and the sound very nice leh. My grandpa got a lot of those rare records…I think some of the songs, youtube oso susah mau cari. Turn on the record oni, you can feel like you’re transported to the old days. I like it very much.LOL.

Better jaga baik2…. Worth a fortune. Most people’s out of order already…good for display only.

  4. Wa, you found the treasure in the heap of the junk,, good on ya…. now I am sure Acer will be very happy to know that, its products are so good and so lasting, as for me, i hardly use the speaker when on the computer,, and i don’t even have the view cam…..

I need the speakers when listening to songs on youtube. The view cam was for skyping with my daughter – I’ve disconnected it though. Cannot tahan see my big fat face on the monitor screen. LOL!!! Not using the mic also…just “chat” on Facebook whenever online.

  5. silence is golden? kekekeke

Things nowadays not very durable ๐Ÿ˜ฆ . Sending it to recycle bin?

Cham lo…new “mini-compo”….sure get hooked in Youtube la ..guess there will be more Youtube songs coming up in your FB?

Hahahahaha!!! The 1st song I listened to: Tim Mcgraw’s “Remember when”. Oooooo….never sounded so good! Swept me off my feet…so beautiful!

  6. Yeah you bet Youtube will never be the same with your multimedia speaker. Bananaz used to connect a cheapo RM10 speakers to my laptop. There was a sale at PC Fair in KL few years back bought a set which comes with sub-woofer for less than RM100. Yup juz as good as hi-fi or mini compo hahaha.

Me Jakun…dunno these things. Not tech-savvy…just use whatever the shop supplies. I think I need to dig out my original Acer keyboad too. This one that I’m using came with the PC – got problem with the space bar…and sometimes, the ENTER key gets stuck….so you can imagine how many pages that would drag me through before I get it unstuck. Grrrrrrr……

  7. whoa! so nice la! no need buy new one oso got gud one ord! ๐Ÿ˜€

Got kah? I just ordered from the shop and they delivered everything…dunno good or not or whether there are better ones. As long as can use…ok lah. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  8. I agree with your first commenter. Sometimes old gadgets are more durable. Just look at the first cellular phones. They are more durable than the hi-tech cellular phones available in the market. Old cellular phones can be thrown across the room and still function well.

It is good that you dug up your old speakers. Saved you some money. ๐Ÿ™‚

Righto! Those old handphones were great. Yup…can do with a little bit of savings these days – not going to go on working much longer. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. Oh! You are going to retire? Don’t be ๐Ÿ˜ฆ my friend. You can still do many things after you retire.

What? I retired 2007… Now just doing a bit of tuition to pass the time but I’m going to stop – too boring and cannot stand getting angry over those Mandarin-speaking students’ horrible English these days. I’d die of a heart attack one fine day if I keep on going like this. Life is too short to waste on something that makes me miserable!

  9. the tech gadgets today all dies after warranty period. Like Warranty Period = 1 year, the gadget goes bye bye at 1 year 1 day. hahaha!

Though, I love my new gadget because of the quality in my demands now are higher. So no choice stuck with 1 year 1 days “poof” gadgets.

Not me. I usually will make do with the basics – only what I need to get by. Wouldn’t bother trying something better…and least of all, something new…especially if it’s expensive.

    1. That is true. I guess when it comes to people like me who are into gaming today… sound, picture and performance quality means alot. =3

      Sounds like i am spendrift >.<; geeee~

Gosh! I never play online games… Gives me a headache. Old man mah! Blogging and Facebook more than enough, plus I watch some video clips on youtube at times to enjoy the songs.

  10. the boy bought me one mini speaker few months back. i must say it does a pretty a decent job despite its miniature size!

Who’s “the boy”? Wah…so lucky, so nice to be young and pretty…got people buy things for you. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. Wow!…still can dig up some useable stuff from the heap of old junk. Save money and enjoy the good quality of the sound effect. You must be on cloud 9. Nowadays those so called hi-tech stuff are not durable and of poor quality. Once “kabooommm”!!!….it is well over their warranty period.

Ya…at least I do not need to dig into my pocket to buy new ones. Stopping my tuition classes…not so much money to throw around anymore.Have to be more careful with my spending… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. Oredy stop your tuition classes kah? I thought October or November when your princess is back.

One small class left… Close shop by September. The other big class, already gulung tikar – cannot tahan getting angry all the time, shorten my life only. Their English is so very horrible, even though they scored A in the PMR and they do not seem to care at all. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I don’t intend to die so soon…

      1. Your students do not know what’s good for them. It’s a pity their parents are working so hard to support their children’s fees.
Hopefully I am able to find an English teacher as good as you in a few years time so that I can send my girls to learn English. Otherwise, I will end up having to teach them and usually it is hard for parents to teach their own children. I can feel my cells dying when I accompany my elder daughter doing her homework and teaching her some simple English every night. For goodness sake she is only 4 yo and I can’t imagine teaching my kids for another 10 years. *faint*

Yes, very hard to teach own kids… Dunno why. I seldom taught my daughter when she was small, she studied by herself – would only help when she had problems e.g. in Maths…even though I’m quite hopeless at the subject myself. Guess they need the support and the reassurance more than anything else so they can slowly work things out themselves.

  12. my pc at home still using cRT monitor. muahahahahahha.. dinosaur age

The old tv look-alike…very bulky at the back? My old one like that… A lot in the schools, many like that. As long as can use, still in good order…no problem. My old one spoilt, so no choice, had to change…

    1. Agree with Ken…old is gold. Like people say, old ginger are “very hiam”, hehehe

“Hiam” in English is hot…so I’m hot stuff, eh? LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  13. Is that a webcam? hehe. Good for skyping too, clear clear sound, can yell at annoying chatters effectively too.

Yes, but I’ve disconnected it. Cannot stand looking at me in the monitor screen, and the mic as well – with the fan blowing, very noisy…can’t hear properly…and if I switch off the fan, I would be sweating plus2. Just type msg to chat…enough lah. Old man, voice so teruk, rupa so teruk…no need for all these things lah… Boyfriend-girlfriend lovey-dovey…want to see one another, ok lah…

  14. Sometimes, old products have better quality.

Like teachers – old experienced ones better than the young ones. Right or not? LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. You listen n watch to youtube eh? Happening eh u STP! I must keep myself updated as to not fall way behind u. Whatever it is, enjoy da bass n the better sound!

What do you think? Don’t play-play…this old man boleh tahan one! Muahahahahaha!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  16. yuhooo..with nice loud speaker + bass, tsk tsk tsk, can sing your heart out and get your feet moving too.

I like to move it, move it…I like to move it, move it… LOL!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  17. eh, uncle STP is tech savvy and can enjoy good sounds too! Wahahaha. nice ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun you-tubing ya.

Humph!! Look down on me old man, hor!!! I think you can’t beat me when it comes to the latest songs and stuff… Blerk!!! ๐Ÿ˜›

    1. Hahaha, not looking down. I’m impressed actually. Coz I’m so out with the latest songs nowadays ๐Ÿ™‚

Hah!! At least you went to MTV World Stage… You saw 30 seconds to Mars live, didn’t you?

  18. Arthur,
My house is full of these gadgets…you name it, we got it.My son can open his own Ipod, MP3 and whatnot shop. We got a few laptops lying around…not using and handphones toksah cakap lar. It’s such a waste but we ourselves don’t know how we manage to accumulate these gadgets….and they are all working wonderfully!…and we have given away to friends and family too!!

I guess you keep up with the latest available…like iPad – I guess you have iPad 2 now. Can give me the old iPad lah like that. Your iPhone what number already? Old one, you don’t want anymore…can give to me also lor… Bring them over when you come to Sibu, can? Whatever you don’t want, just give to me. Wink! Wink! LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. You serious, ah?

LOL!!! No lah… I’m techno-phobic. Scared of these things. Even getting a handphone took me years and years…and what more to say going online and blogging. Real jakun, jungle people… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. Cool new speakers, now you can guarantee a brand new quality audio liao, congratz!^^

Yes, I’m enjoying every moment of it… Gosh! At this rate, I will be put on throttle very much sooner this month… Already connection these few days not good, so darn slow… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. Same here… turtle-ish connection, got frusted watching movie online too…

      SIGHHHHHH!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  20. Wah those speakers look like from the dinosaur age. I have not heard the word mini-compo for at least 10 years already. I really doubt the younger generation will ever know what it is.

Never mind the look – as long as it sounds good. Exactly like looking for a wife – looks nice but not a good wife, what for? Muahahahaha!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. Moral of the story… don’t throw away old stuff.. we never know when we want to use them again… save our few cents, huh? oooops..not cents.. ringgits!!

Ya…don’t write off the old folks just yet. We may come out with a few surprises sometimes… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. hahahaha~~ I use a Sony 7.1 home theatre here in the jungle.
Superb quality all the time! =)

Oooooo…great for karaoke singing! When are you going to invite me over? Muahahahaha!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  23. Get bigger ones…..that goes boom boom boom….until neighbour house also shake….ha ha ha!

Like those cars… I wonder how they can survive that but I did hear that it only pulsates like that on the outside – just to show off.

  24. i remember the days when I would eagerly go home after a week of school turn on the mini-compo and immerse myself into music ๐Ÿ™‚

If music be the food of love, play on… First thing I would do when getting into the car.
