Good and bad…

My girl wanted to go here as she remembered the cucur udang (prawn fritters) that the people at the next table were having the last time we were here and they looked really good. In the meantime, a friend of mine also asked me to go and try their Sarawak laksa so there we were last Sunday afternoon for lunch.

The mum had the ayam penyet berempah

…and said it was very good. However, she would not commit herself and insisted that the rest she had elsewhere were also good so she could not say which one was better.

Some friends of mine used to go jogging in the early morning and once they were done, they would drop by here for breakfast. I asked them what was so nice and one of them told me that they just had the roti canai sarang burung (bird’s nest canai bread)…

Finally, I had the chance to order that to see if it was any good. Initially, I thought it was quite ordinary, nothing to get excited about but when I had it with the dhal curry…

…and the bits of vegetables inside and the lovely runny egg yolks, I thought that was really good. I sure would not mind going for that again the next time we drop by here.

As for the Sarawak laksa

…it turned out to be most disappointing. It was EXTREMELY salty like the broth had been reheated over and over again MANY times and had thickened and become very salty. I must say that I have other not-so-good Sarawak laksa elsewhere that can beat this one hands down but of course, there are others just as bad and wild horses would not be able to drag us back there, no matter what. Once bitten, twice shy!

No, they did not bother to use the nice and expensive Bintulu belacan even…

…just one of those ordinary cheap factory-made ones from West Malaysia.

Thankfully, the cucur udang was a pleasant surprise. The photograph in the menu showed three pieces only, all in a big plate but when it was served, we were stunned!!! There were so many of them, all so very big with the visibly huge prawns in each of them…

Yes, it was very nice, piping hot and crispy and the lovely sauce that they served with them sure brought the taste to a whole new level. This is definitely something we would want to come back for, no doubt about it.

Well, that’s not all! When we got there, I saw my ex-student and his wife and children and friends at the next table enjoying their brunch. I did meet him a few times here and there before and without fail, this nice and generous boy would pick the tab quietly and this time was no exception. Thank you so much, Tiu Lee – I certainly appreciate it a lot but please, having done it so many times before, it is really too good already. Do let me settle my own bills (and yours too, sometimes) next time.
