My girl had a special event on in school last Saturday – actually, it was a replacement day for one of the two extra holidays taken during that week for Chinese New Year. She was getting some packed lunch at school so we could not go out together that day like what we would usually do on weekends. In the end, my missus and I went next door for a bite to eat while waiting for her to finish so we could all go home together.
I went for the chap fan (mixed rice)…

…even though it looked like they were cooking less on Saturdays since they usually would not get the office crowd and the teachers and students from the surrounding schools.
I asked for the pork belly in soy sauce…

…and the siew yoke (roast pork)…

…and the pumpkin…

I thought the siew yoke was kind of bland and they did not get the skin right, not crusty and crispy but the other two were good and it came with a bowl of complimentary soup (the same bone stock soup for the chin therng mee and pian sip) which was pretty good as well.
Well, the best part, of course, was the fact that it cost me RM4.50 only…

…for all that! I shared the photos on Facebook and somebody called it the “Menu Rahmah“, something that is going on in the country right now where they are serving food at very affordable prices so even the not-so-rich folks would be able to eat. Well, there’s one here in Sibu – their Rahmah economy rice is RM5.00 for one meat and two veg, a bit more expensive than here – RM4.50 only for the two meat and one veg that I had!
The mee goreng (basah), their version of the Foochow fried mee, wet…

…that my missus had was only RM3.50. She said it was good but frankly, at that price, there is really no reason to complain. Elsewhere, at this point in time, it is between RM5.00 – 6.00 or more a plate.
Later that day, we went to the weekly Saturday novena and the evening service at our regular church as usual so we ended up going for a very late dinner here when it was all over at around 8.00 p.m.
We had the sweet and sour pork…

…the cangkok manis with egg…

…and the sea cucumber soup…

I must say that the sea cucumber soup here is my favourite lately. It did not come cheap though, not after what I had for lunch that day. The total for the food was RM52.00 but yes, it was very nice, as usual.
Well, there’s just one more week to go before the so-called “end-of-the-year” holidays for one month. What have you all got planned?
LAUDATO SI’ CANTEEN…

…is located in what was previously known as the Catholic Centre in the compound of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Jalan Lanang and St Rita’s Primary School, Jalan Bukit Assek and Y2K CAFE 千禧餐馆 (2.294220, 111.825753)…

…is located at No. 16, Jalan Tunku Osman, along Lorong Tunku Osman 1. round the corner from that block of shops where the branches of AmBank & RHB Bank are located, with its back entrance facing the side (right, not the main one) entrance/exit of Methodist Secondary School.
Sounds like you had a great day with your family! Enjoying a delicious and affordable lunch followed by a late dinner with your favorite sea cucumber soup is a treat. Have a great end-of-the-year holiday!
Yes, it was a good day. Looking forward to the year-end break starting next week. How are things in Auckland? Has the cyclone landed yet?
Well, I don’t think I can get RM52 for all those 3 yummy dishes over here. I would say that they cheap. The Foochow fried mee, wet looks pretty nice. With meat, only RM3.50. Here char kway teow with taugeh only already cost RM5 and that was sometime ago. Now, maybe the price has increased. I would not know because didn’t have it for a long time. Kolo mee with 3 -4 pieces of thinly sliced char siu and a sprinkle of some minced meat cost RM6…🤦♀️
They say the char kway teow here is nice – my girl’s colleague will always order two plates at one go, she says, only RM3.50 each. I’ve been wanting to go there to try but yet to do so.
How could that only be RM 4.50??
This is a church project run by volunteers. Everything is so affordable. This can be an indication as to how much those people make with their outrageous prices!
That’s a great point
Indeed!
So cheap considering the dish is for one person. And plus rice some more.
Oh, I like sea cucumber soup. Slurp. Didn’t have any for CNY. But we did get to taste shark fin soup after CNY. A gift of fried shark fins from a hamper.
Tsk! Tsk! We had fake sharks’ fins for our Chap Goh Meh dinner, dry – fried with egg but the offensive stuff was substituted with sea cucumber. Tasted exactly the same!
