Another chance…

The other day, I finally got down to giving the Taiwan-made Baoril, their version of Bovril, a try with my porridge…

…but it was not nice at all and I was so very disappointed.

They did claim that it was made from real beef, unlike Bovril these days unless you buy the VERY expensive version but I could not detect any taste of beef in it at all nor did it taste anything like Bovril or for that matter, Marmite or Vegemite. As a matter of fact, I could not make out any taste at all just that it was extremely salty and truth be told, I think I would have enjoyed my porridge a lot more that day if I had just added soy sauce to it.

I was thinking of just throwing it away but on second thought, I decided to give it another chance. Perhaps it might go well with noodles so the other day, I took a pack of the made-in-Sibu Daddy mee, just the noodles and the shallot oil…

I did not feel like peeling and slicing and frying my own shallots to get the oil to toss the noodles so I just used what was in the packet.

I added a little bit of Baoril to the shallot oil…

…just a little bit, not even half a teaspoon, seeing how it was so very salty and I also put in a pinch of msg.

I boiled the noodles till soft, drained them well and tossed them with the ingredients that I had in the plate…

…and served them with a bit of chopped spring onion from my garden.

It tasted all right, quite nice but it was still a bit salty in part, probably because I did not toss the noodles…

…thoroughly enough but I was a bit put off by the taste of the instant noodles that stuck out like a sore thumb.

Perhaps it will be nicer with mee sua or fresh kampua mee or mee pok. I shall get hold of some and cook to give them a try and then, I shall decide whether to keep the bottle or not. Stay tuned!
