In my blogpost the other day, I mentioned that the friendly and generous lady at my favourite fish & seafood stall here dropped a small bag of fish paste into the bag of fish that I had bought and said that she was giving that to me. I did not take a good look at the time and I just assumed that there was probably enough for 5-6 fish balls only.
I took it out one morning, thinking that I could just make some fish balls to go with my instant noodles for breakfast and much to my surprise, I saw that there was quite a lot…

…definitely enough for a number of fish balls.
In the end, I decided to use it to cook fish ball soup for our meals that day. I did not bother to chop or pound the fish paste well to make sure it had that QQ (firm) texture – I just rolled it into balls…

…and I also peeled a few cloves of garlic, rinsed and drained a handful of tang chai (preserved vegetables) and got a couple of sprigs of daun sup (Chinese celery) from my garden.
It was very easy to cook, I just boiled everything in enough water for two bowls of soup, one for lunch and one for dinner and added a bit of chicken stock for its seasoning. I also soaked a small packet of tang hoon (glass noodles) to soften – my girl loves that with fish ball soup…

Yes, it was very nice, thank you so much to that very nice lady at the fish & seafood stall in my neighbourhood. It may be simple, nothing spectacular but I do enjoy such refreshing clear Chinese-style soups a lot.
The fish & seafood stall is located to the right of CCL FRESH MINI MARKET against the wall at that end of the block to the right of the Grand Wonderful Hotel (2.309601, 111.845163) along Jalan Pipit, off Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai, on your right if you go in via the entrance where San Len Tyres is located, just before the Petronas petrol station, a short distance from Delta Mall.
