That day when my missus was busy making her kuih dahlia, my girl said that actually, she was planning to make some bomboloni that afternoon but since the kitchen was not free, she said she would do it the following day instead.
Yeah!!! I would not have known what those were if my blogger friend, Phong Hong, had not blogged about the ones she had a couple of days earlier and went praising them sky high.
Well, for the uninitiated, a bombolone is an Italian filled doughnut and is eaten as a snack food and dessert and indeed, that was the impression I had when I saw the ones Phong Hong had delivered from here – they were obviously just doughnuts with filling. Bomboloni is the plural form of bombolone, pronounced bom-bo-lo-nay with the stress/emphasis on the 3rd syllable. Why, there is even a song about it!
I don’t think it is THAT difficult to make our regular doughnuts but making these Italian ones sure did not look all that easy. It took my girl hours to get the dough ready – it seemed that the preparation entailed a lot of waiting and after what seemed like forever, finally, she was able to start rolling it into balls…
…and deep fry them…
…after which, she coated them with a mixture of icing sugar and cinnamon…
Finally, she pumped vanilla whipping cream into them…
…and the bomboloni were ready!
Yes, they were very very nice…
…and I had two at one go in one sitting – I had to resist the temptation of helping myself to more!
However, seeing that making these was no piece of cake, I certainly would not ask my girl to make them again. At least, I know what they are now and how nice they can be – perhaps I shall wait till things get better to hop over to KL to enjoy the ones there.
