Be one…

It was Pentecost Sunday…

Pentecost at St Mary's

…and in an effort to bring the members of the church closer to one another, the parish priest announced the declaration of the 10th of June, the Feast of Our Lady, Mother of The Church, the following day, Monday, as our Parish Day beginning this year and there was a little celebration

Come Holy Spirit

…that day including a pot luck breakfast in the parish hall after the Sunday service that morning.

There was a big cake, a very nice one with the fragrance of coffee and chocolate but they had already started cutting it up before I could take  a photograph of it and because it would be the parish priest’s birthday the following Sunday, they got him another cake, a smaller one…

Birthday

…specially for the occasion.

There were lots of cakes, swiss rolls…

…fruit cakes…

Fruit cake

…curry and sardine puffs…

Puffs

…egg tarts…

Egg tarts

…and Portuguese egg tarts…

…and I enjoyed the beef satay that somebody cooked, eaten with bread.

I brought these Jakar sio bee (meat dumplings)…

Jakar sio bee

…as my contribution to the party – two whole trays like the one in the photograph and they were gone in no time at all. Everybody loved them, it seemed and the good thing is these days, we can get them very easily from this shop round the corner from my house. My missus made cups of fruit jelly (dadih) and they were a hot favorite as well.

We certainly had a great time at the gathering, enjoying what everyone had brought along to share and chit-chatting and getting to know one another better, a step forward from the usual hello and goodbye each time we meet when we go for the weekly Sunday service in the church.

  1. That’s a lot of goodies to enjoy. Apart from enjoying, I think this is a great gathering for fellowship with each other. Does your Church often have this potluck gathering or just on special occasion?

There have been a few but we were not able to join – Sunday morning, we would be on our way to our girl’s school in the jungle or Sunday night, we would have just got back, tired…and no time to prepare what we would like to bring.

  2. The Parish priest is wise to declare a Parish day. So many sio bees. You must have steamed them by turn many rounds unless you have a huge steamer basket. No photos of the fruit jelly?

I have a two-tier steamer, aluminium so I was able to use that to steam quite a lot one go. Even so, I gad to do two rounds. You can click the link to the church’s website to see the photo if you are thus inclined – the jelly are the ones lined up by the side of the table, my missus put it in plastic cups.

    1. Clicked on the link and looked at all the photos but couldn’t see the plastic cups. Maybe I was looking at them but didn’t know that they are the ones. Spotted you in yellow tshirt in at least 3 photos. In one, you were sitting down and pointing at something. 🙂

Wowwww!!! You have very sharp eyes. Yes, I was sitting there talking to someone.

P.S.: You can see those cups of fruit dadih in the photo of me sitting down and pointing, right beside the packet drinks – not that many cups left.

  3. Ah, how I miss Portuguese egg tarts!

We have these in the bakeries but not all are good – need to know where the good ones are. The ones we had that morning were especially good, home made, special order! Btw, thanks for dropping by and commenting…and thanks also for liking some of my posts. Cheers!!!

  4. Very nice gathering and when there is food, even more so! hee..hee..

…and especially when I saw that the sio bee I brought along were a hit, all gone, not a single one left! LOL!!!

  5. Nice gathering where everyone enjoyed over food.

Yes, we enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to the next one!

  6. love pot luck events.. 🙂 .. fruit jelly and meat dumplings, nice noms!

Nice and the socialising, chatting with fellow-church goers – that was nice too.
