Half a century ago, all of us were in Form 5 and after the Senior Cambridge Examination, we went our separate ways and to commemorate our 50th year, we had a grand reunion celebration last weekend starting with a lunch gathering here on Thursday but I could not join that one as I had to go and get my girl from her school in the jungle and bring her home for the long weekend – they took the day off for Ching Ming.
Next on the programme was the dinner here…
…on Thursday evening in their function room on the 2nd floor. Boy, the response was so very good and the place was packed.
We had most of my favourites and as the light was not exactly bright, I did not take the photographs of everything in the lavish buffet spread but I had never had their satay, chicken and beef…
…before as it is not on their regular menu. I sure enjoyed it very much and had more than one helping.
This is also not on their menu, the paku (wild jungle fern) with santan (coconut milk)…
…and between that one and this one, their tapioca leaves with sweet potatoes…
…I would say that I liked the latter more but both were really good.
There was also the ulam with the super awesome sambals but the photo did not come out too well. Everyone sang praises of the food – they so loved all the salads as well as the other dishes, including this one, their otak-otak…
– my ex-classmate sitting beside me specifically gave it a special mention and I could see all the delighted faces when the jelly pisang was served for dessert – brings us back to the 60’s, one said.
There was live entertainment…
…and singing and dancing too. That sure was a great start to our celebration!
PAYUNG CAFÉ (2.284049, 111.833014) is located at No.20F, Lanang Road, Sibu, Malaysia, back to back with the multi-storey car park of the Kingwood Hotel which faces the majestic Rejang River.
Wow! What a great gathering and in Payung too! Not surprising that it is packed! Hope you all had a great time!
We had joy, we had fun… We sure had a great time and this was just the tip of the iceberg, more to come!
Right choice to choose Payung Cafe for the grand reunion celebration. Nice spread of satay and otak otak. Glad everyone has a great time.
Yes, they sure did. Gosh!!! After all these years!
Wonderful reunion. Wow. 50 years. That was long. It must feel good to meet those old friends and reconnected with them.
It sure was good! So very nice to see one another again and catch up with one another’s lives. Lots of love and happiness in the air.
Ahh those fern really looks good, I try to order them whenever I’m at Borneo
Not to be missed when over at this side of the sea…
Ah, a reunion at Payung! What a good choice of venue. I am sure everyone’s tummy was very happy hee..hee…
Yes, the lunch we had the following day was good too (tomorrow’s post) but all the rest do not come anywhere close, that’s for sure.
I like events like this, be it weddings, gatherings or reunions, they are always full of joy, bliss and happiness catching up with one another. 50 years is a very long time, good to see everyone after such a long time.
Yes, it sure helped to strengthen the half a century bond between us and it was good to see all of us looking really good too, all so very active and young at heart!
Wow, that really is quite amazing to stay in touch after 50 years! What a special event.
Glad that everyone is well, still very active…and young at heart! LOL!!!
Ahh Payung Cafe is always as impressive as ever. The otak otak looks really good. I’m sure I’ll dive in there for more.
So when are coming? Come on over! You’ll love it here. Great food, not just at Payung…and cheap!!! You’ll love it here, I’m sure…very different from your side, not so…
