Now it’s your turn…

My cousin and her hubby from Brisbane, Australia, invited us to dinner here the following night after I had taken them for a Thai dinner here. Their son would be dropping by Sibu that day and would be joining us as well and of course, it was our pleasure to be a part of it all…

Dinner with cousin & family at New Capitol

They ordered the celebrated Sibu Foochow-style sio bee

…and their equally well-known fried kampua noodles…

…and we had their just-as-popular chicken rice and the steamed chicken…

This was something like the best in Sibu in one sitting especially when they were here for a few days only and the son was here for just a couple of nights and we would not know when they would be dropping by again. To the most, they will probably come home just once a year.

We also had one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, their checkerboard duck…

…which happens to be my girl’s favourite.

The corn soup…

…was very nice and so was the Thai/kerabu-style midin (wild jungle fern)…

The sesame spare ribs…

…were good and their sweet and sour giant udang galah (freshwater prawns)…

…certainly were like no other sweet and sour dishes that we had had elsewhere and this one was truly a winner!

Yes, it was definitely a delightful get-together – there was so much to catch up when we are living so far apart and do not get to meet often. Thank you so much for the treat, Teresa & Richard – hope you had a pleasant stay and got to eat and enjoy a lot of the local delights, especially those favourites from days gone by. We sure are looking forward to the next time you all come to town again.

New Capitol Restaurant 新首都酒家 (2.288619, 111.830057) is located at No. 46, Lebuh Tanah Mas, off Jalan Kampung Nyabor, in the block of shops opposite the Sarawak House/King’s Trioplex/Premier Hotel at the very far end on the right.

  1. Delicious food! Just a scoop from each dish and I would be so full. Just curious, did their son fly in from Brisbane, Australia too?

Yes, but I think he was in Kuching most of the time, looking up old friends there. He grew up and went to school there – the parents were based there at the time but every holiday, he and the sis would come to Sibu to spend them with the grandma…and I was staying next door at the time.

  2. Such a sumptious feast. Good to be able to catch up with your relatives whenever they are home.

Next time if I ever go here, I must order its checkerboard duck. Hehe.

Oh yes!!! You were there and you did not order that! The fish you had was good too, a signature dish as well.

    1. Uncle ordered everything before we reached there, so we “makan” only. Hahaha.

…and he paid too, I guess. Best lah, like that, just eat! LOL!!!

  3. All looks so tempting and yummy. I can eat a lot of that sio bee.

They’re very big. Usually if I eat those and only those, I think I would stop at 3, enough already.

  4. I was going to ask you the same thing as Darlene.. both of you can enter the siblings’ lookalike contest. As for me and my siblings, each of us have a different look, cannot explain why though from the same parents! LOL… The restaurant looks familiar, was that the one I went to last time? 🙂

Nope! You did not come to this one then.

Ya, we two look alike but our older brother looks very different – you will not be able to tell. Shape and size also not the same.

    1. Reana – Their muka chop macam twins! ADUH I had to do a double take because I was trying to figure out the long hair on Uncle Art! LOL

Oh dear! I would probably look like an overweight John Lennon with long hair like that. LOL!

  5. food looks good. ever since i did my minor op for gerd recently, everything i eat has to be divided by 4.. stomach grew smaller already! ><"

Oh dear!!! Hope you are ok now. What is the cause? Irregular eating habits? Too much booze? Or not eating right?
