Big mouth strikes again…

I had the focaccia sandwich here

Caffeine Cafe focaccia sandwich

…the other day and it was quite big, bigger than the size of a slice from a regular loaf of sandwich bread and that brought to mind the question that my friend, Merryn, asked on Facebook regarding eating the roti canai, celup or banjir.

I did describe how I would eat a piece of roti canai that day and I have often wondered how people would eat those huge towering burgers – if they were to eat those like a burger, they would need to have a really big mouth and on the other hand, if they were to take it apart to eat, then it would no longer be a burger anymore as they would be eating everything individually, not as a whole.

That day, my girl said that she would just take it by hand and eat it like a sandwich but no, that was not how I ate it. Let me show you what I did.

Firstly, I cut it into slices across its width like this…

Slice

…and then, I cut the slice into halves…

Halves

I guess you would have to cut it smaller, those of you with dainty, not very big mouths.

Once done, I added a bit of the lovely scrambled egg onto the morsel…

Add egg

…and poked through it with my fork…

Poke with fork

…and in it went, into my mouth.

I do have style, very eyew siew (gentle/elegant), very classy, don’t you think? LOL!!!

  1. If I eat at home, I don’t care and will eat mouthful by mouthful, eat like that then tasty, haha, but if eat outside, have to pretend pretend a bit lah as got image to maintain hee hee

Exactly! Great minds think alike! LOL!

In the colonial days, this social etiquette thing is such a big deal for the orang putih, couldn’t even make a sound – the cutlery hitting the plate and what to eat with what and all those things. These days, they will have fits at some of those really noisy places.

  2. I would use a fork to poke in the middle to get the whole thing in place first then cut it and put into the mouth and that is how I eat my burger and for this I guess I apply the same method.

Yes, had to use the fork to hold the sandwich together and size. Otherwise, it will all fall apart.

But some burgers are such huge monsters – your fork will not be long enough to pierce through to hold it down. I do think it is just a gimmick, a trend though – no need to go overboard like that when it comes to burgers.

  3. Hahaha. Very elegant way of eating. For me,I would cut the bread into few pieces and eat with fingers.

Long time I didn’t have focaccia sandwich. I used to enjoy the one in the Elephant’s Cafe in Ang Cheng Ho but now hardly go all the way there.

I can’t remember where I had a sandwich along this same line, not since 2013 at this Irish coffee place at Mid Valley in KL.

  4. Normally my type of burger will fall even before I eat it… that is why the stick have to poke right through, I was told.. anyway, I eat mine splitting all over.. not very gentle, unlike you..

Go classy place, must have a bit of class mah, otherwise better go coffee shop or mamak stall to eat. LOL!
