My uncle and his family lived in Sibu for a long time before they moved to Kuching – all the children finished their secondary school years here…and every year, when they came back to Sibu, he would want to eat the things and go to places that they loved before even if it meant going to the same places every year. In his own words, “No matter what, the food in Sibu is still the best!”
So every year, without fail, they would drop by here like what they did last year and the year before. In fact, long before they came, they sent word asking me to go and reserve a table and pre-order their checkerboard duck…
There we were that very evening on the day they arrived and I also ordered another specialty of this restaurant, their ikan bawal putih/pek chio (white pomfret)…
…filleted and deep-fried and served with the very nice, kind of sweet and sour sauce minus the tomato ketchup.
I ordered my favourite these days – the bitter gourd omelette…
…something that they had never tried before, it seemed and they absolutely loved it! I bet they would be ordering that or cook their own when they get back to Kuching.
We also had the Foochow-style tofu soup with canned oysters…
…and knowing how they loved the Sibu Foochow-style sio bee…
…I ordered a few for them, just one each. Wowwww!!! They enjoyed it so much and kept singing its praises and seeing that, I went and bought 3 packs, 60 altogether – the frozen ones for them to take back to Kuching and enjoy slowly. Yes, they do sell them, frozen, in packs of 10 or 20.
The total for the food that night came up to only RM152.80 for the 7 of us. I don’t know if they can get anything like this in Kuching at this price but for sure, my uncle will be the first to tell you that there is nothing there that is this nice. Hehehehehe!!!
