Let down…

We were at my mum’s place that morning, spending some time with her and keeping her company and my girl was watching some American cooking show on tv and they had a guest chef, a Chinese named Jeremy, who probably was born and has lived there all his life, judging from his accent – he was cooking a Chinese beef dish. When we went for lunch that afternoon, my girl said that after seeing what she saw, she felt like having Chinese.

This place was closed – probably it was their off day so we went here instead, my late father’s favourite eating place…and promptly placed our orders for my girl’s favourites, the fried cangkuk manis/manicai with egg…

…and the Foochow-style tofu with canned oysters soup…

We could remember the very nice fish we had here sometime ago so we asked for it. Unfortunately the lady boss said that they were running low on their stock of fish – it is usually like this around the end of the year during the rainy/stormy season plus the sellers would be hoarding what they have, keeping them for Chinese New Year when they can jack up their prices sky high.

In the end, we had the or chio/ikan bawal hitam/black pomfret (RM25.00)…

My girl enjoyed the one we had here so very much so I was hoping she would love the one here as well. It sure looked good inside out…

…but it was not good. The texture of the fish was kind of mushy but thankfully, it did not have any unpleasant smell that one might encounter in stale seafood so it was obviously not because the fish was not fresh. Whatever the reason may be, I guess we would just have to stick to their lemon chicken that they do really well – theirs is our favourite in town.

I also ordered their fried beef (RM15.00)…

…and since we’re staying away from soy sauce, I asked for it to be fried with ginger and dried chili and yes, it was very nice. My girl remarked that we could try cooking our own this way at home.

The total for the four dishes came up to RM60.00 and that was not cheap at all and it would not have been so bad if the fish had not been such a let down.
