Back here…

All too soon it was time for my sister-in-law to go back to Kuching and on her final night in town, I asked my brother-in-law (her brother) and his missus to join us for dinner.

We have not been here for a long time, not since December last year, for the simple reason that there isn’t much here that my girl can eat owing to her gluten-intolerance as most of the things here are flour-coated and deep fried or cooked with soy sauce or tomato sauce…or with cereal/oats. That night, however, since my girl was at her school in the jungle, I decided to go back here with my missus and in-laws for the things that we’ve loved so well.

I had no second thoughts and wasted no time at all in ordering my brother-in-law’s favourite, the sweet and sour fish fillet…

…and everybody’s favourites here, their butter scotch prawns…

…and their bitter gourd fried with salted egg…

…and needless to say, we enjoyed them all. I guess should we decide to come here with my girl, she could eat the bitter gourd and as a matter of fact, she would not touch the vegetable until she tried the one here and there has been no turning back since. A cousin of mine in Kuching also said that she would not eat bitter gourd anywhere, just the one here.

Another dish that they do very well is the cangkuk manis fried with egg…

…which, of course, is also gluten-free and yes, it was, as always, very nicely done that night.

We decided to pick their Foochow-style tofu soup with canned oysters…

…from all the options available and that was good as well.

The boss suggested something new – their salted egg pork…

…and we did enjoy it, a welcome change from the usual kiam sor too bak (salty crusty pork).

The food alone came up to only RM75.00, 6 dishes for 5 people and with the rice and our drinks, the total was RM87.00 and like what he used to do way back then, the boss gave me a discount of RM2.00 and charged me RM85.00 only for everything.

I must say it was a lovely evening, getting together with one’s dear ones for a simple but delightful dinner.
