I said I would go back to this place to try their kway teow th’ng (flat rice noodles in soup) but despite it being a Thursday and it was not towards the end of the month either, the stall was closed. I positively remember that the guy said that they only close on Mondays and sometime at the end of the month as well. Tsk! Tsk!

Well, I did not fancy anything from the other stalls so I decided to go to this place…

Uncle Bakery

…just next door, more or less – two doors away from the hotel entrance to the right of the food court. The last time I was here was in 2012 and the sign had started to fade then – now, one can hardly see the name in English anymore, Uncle Bakery.

They do not seem to have an elaborate menu – you can see it on the wall here…

I did not see Foochow fried noodles (RM4.00)…

…listed anywhere but that was what my missus wanted and that was what she got…

She said it was nice, thankfully – we did not like their kampua noodles that last time we were here.

I remember people were saying at the time that the mee sua was among the best in town and I remember when I had it before, it was very good so I ordered that again (RM6.00)…

…this time around. The price is the same as elsewhere but it seems that you will only get one chunk of chicken here but to be fair, it was a huge chunk, more or less equal to two pieces of the meat in the mee sua elsewhere.

I tried it and to say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. I did not think it was very nice for want of a whole lot of the traditional Foochow red wine, nowhere near what I had here. Then, I spotted it at the table next to ours…

…sure was very nice after that…and yes, I wouldn’t mind stopping by for this should I happen to be in the vicinity or on days when I feel like having it again.

  1. Maybe the kway teow t’ng seller has an emergency so could not open for business that Thursday that you were there. Good that they put the bottle of traditional Foochow red wine on the table for customers to help themselves with it because some people may not like the taste of the red wine so they will be fine with the version of mee sua that they are served with without needing to add more red wine to it like you did, hehehe.

    Exactly! I went back again a few days later and there was a notice – closed 21st – 24th so it is open this week. Not sure if I will be going past that way, will see.

    I do think it is a good idea too, giving the red wine separately…just that I did not see the bottle at the next table at first – none on our table – and it tasted like there was no red wine at all in the bowl when it was served. Later, I did see another bottle at another table, not all tables so I guess that is the general practice there – you add your own.

  2. It has been a while since I have mee suah. The Foochow fried noodle looked good to me.

    Lots in Kuching, some very very nice, maybe even nicer than here. Lots of Foochows in Kuching now. I do know for one that MeKong’s good – opposite Heritage Restaurant.

  3. I wonder why they call is “uncle bakery” as I don’t see any baked items on the menu?

    Yes, they have – at the glass cabinets in front. Some people like their Korean mochi buns, not my favourite the ones here…and others include Hokkaido cup cakes, chicken pies and so on. I think they started off as a bakery and then branched into cooking stuff and probably did much better so the bakery bit is kind of toned down now…but the name stays.

  4. Lucky got English translation.. If only Mandarin, dunno how to read, hehe.. I would love to try the nasi salad ayam, sounds interesting..

    Can always ask, they will tell you what they have. Not a fan of that. They have this at a lot of places here, just fried chicken with a whole lot of mayo on top. Here, anything with mayo, they call salad. 😦

  5. From the 1st pix the mee sua broth looks very mild. After adding extra red wine, shows some kind of ummphhh!!!….They are so generous to have a bottle of extra red wine for people to add on to suit their taste. So far, never come across this elsewhere.

    Yes, and red wine is not all that cheap these days – good ones are at least RM8.00 a bottle, maybe more now…and if I ask for it at Noodle House here where the mee sua is definitely more expensive, they will give a spoonful in the little soy sauce plate, so stingy with it.

  6. Self-service huh? Not a fan of Mee Sua, at least not the local Mee Sua, would not mind Korean Mee Sua though 😛

    Not really, I could have asked if I wanted but got own legs, no need to be so pampered.

    My KL friends loved our mee sua, the one here – there is the link to that in this post. I had the mee sua in KL, not nice and so expensive, double the price and it was like mee sua in concentrated traditional white wine – I felt quite drunk after that and I did not even finish half the bowl. A friend had the red one in Sitiawan – he said not nice, nothing like the ones here and far from what his mum cooks at home.

    My girl and the mum did not go for the Korean one when they were there but when we went in the 80’s, we had something like ours, Korean ginseng chicken mee sua, and we loved it so much that we went back for it every day – so nice in the cold winter days, with their traditional white wine. My cousin in Kuching had it though and she did not like it, not nice she said and there wasn’t any wine – maybe she did not go to the right place.

  7. I’ve only ever had mee sua as a home cooked dish, and have never noticed it as a dish for sale in stalls or restaurants.

    Not that popular in Singapore and definitely not over there, I guess. I am surprised they are not selling it at The Kitchen Inn though, a Sibu Foochow delicacy. It may sell well, for all we know.

  8. Perhaps they may not have an elaborate menu, but sometimes it is better to have a smaller menu, as they get the chance to be really good at the items they prepare.

    I always feel this way. Some may have a whole list but nothing is nice, best to specialise in a few really good stuff.

  9. Oh, I see that they leave bottles of the red wine on the table for customers to pour into the mee sua. Perhaps it is good that way because some may prefer less red wine while others like you prefer more.

    Yes, usually it is in the soup but very light, would need to ask for more red wine if one wants it stronger. Here, it’s on the table, help yourself. I like!!!

  10. I still prefer your homecooked mee sua…

    The same, just as nice but yes, some places, really not up to standard. Same with kampua, Foochow fried noodles and all the rest. Everybody can sell but not everybody can cook.

  11. I can only get this type of meesua with red wine in Sitiawan… so far, in Ipoh, I have not found any shop selling this as yet. With the bottle of red wine on the table, I guess it would be used up very fast? hahahaha.. I guess most of us would love to have more “kick” in their soup!

    Sitiawan one, not the same – it’s more ang chao mee sua, the lees – the red yeast rice residue from making the wine, not ang chiew mee sua – the wine, the good stuff.

  12. OMG Mee sua! I havent had that in a while. Ok next stop!

    I liked MeKong’s. Foochow fried noodles there was good too, thought the kampua was just so so. Opposite Heritage Restaurant/Hidden Treasures.

  13. Pouring wine into food sounds like something I would do! Everything’s better with a splash of liquor, hehe

    Like the fish lips soup I had at the Kuching Hilton, it was so good after I poured some whisky into it. Would be nicer with brandy but there wasn’t any around at the time.

  14. aaahhh…after adding the red wine…it does give an extra uhmpp to it.

    Haven’t had this for a long time now, eh? Has to have a lot of red wine, otherwise something’s missing, not as nice.
