The way it was…

I think I did mention in passing in my replies to some comments on my previous posts that my girl was not coming home last weekend as they had their school sports and also some PTA function right up till Saturday night so the mum and I had to drive to her school on Sunday bringing fresh supplies of what she would like to eat this week and other stuff. I told her to sleep late and have a good rest and we would buy lunch and get there at around noon.

I drove by here hoping to buy their very nice roast meat, among my favourites in town, but even though it was already past 8.00 a.m. at the time, it appeared that they had not started business for the day so I went to the other place right around the corner. This one used to be my favourite – I particularly loved the rice but the last time we had that, it was so very disappointing and when I shared the post on Facebook, everyone was in agreement and expressed the exact same sentiments. However, when we were there very recently for the very nice beef noodles, there were others having the chicken rice…and I could actually smell the very nice fragrance so I said to myself that they probably had pulled up their socks and what they dished out would be very much nicer, just like the way it was. I never got round to trying though so I thought I would buy that (RM4.50, chicken thigh/drumstick)…

…and we could have that for our lunch. Indeed, it was really very nice, as nice as I could remember it to be before. I would not know what went into the cooking of the rice…

…but I could detect a very nice scent of garlic – what I do know is they would use ginger and whatever else to cook it but this certainly puts this one a cut above most, if not all of the rest around here. If this is what it is like now, I certainly would love to go back again for more and you may have noticed in the first photograph that, as always, I could not resist asking for the stewed egg (RM1.00) which I enjoy a lot.

I also bought some siew yoke (roast pork) that my girl loves a lot (RM10.00)…

…to share and while I was waiting for them to pack everything for me to take away, I saw their char siew (BBQ pork) that looked pretty good so I asked for that as well (RM10.00)…

It was very nice but it was not exactly like char siew as we know it. This was not sweet and there was that lovely fragrance of five-spice powder…

So off we went on our way to our girl’s school and even though we got there a little early at around 11.00, she was already up and about and doing her work – getting ready all the reports and what not before the school closes for the long end-of-year holidays at the end of this week.

We had our lunch together and sat and chatted about the things that had transpired over the past few days and it was way past noon, before 1.00 p.m. when the mum and I left the school and made our way back home.
