Something to shout about…

I was driving past this hawker centre…

…at Simpang Tiga here in Sibu that morning and I decided to stop by to see what they had in store for breakfast. Unfortunately, most of the stalls were not open even though it was already past 7.30 a.m. – they obviously do not subscribe to the fact that it is the early bird that catches the worm.

This one…

Let's Makan 1

…was and it certainly seemed to be getting a lot of the business, not that everybody had much of a choice, but at this time of the day, all they were serving was their American breakfast…

Menu

I looked at the menu and I thought I would be getting all the items listed for what the guy told me – RM3.50! Unfortunately, it turned out that one would have to make a few choices and what I got in the end was this…

American breakfast

– an omelette, one slice of toast with a bit of margarine on top and a spoonful of baked beans. Gee!!! I thought that was expensive – I would expect a sausage, at least, even if it had been one of those rubbery ones sold in the frozen sections in most supermarkets…but of course, it was not their fault. No sausage was mentioned in the menu and I did get some baked beans by the side. The omelette was very nicely done and to my liking…but on the whole, it really was NOT something to shout about. I would want to go back there again though, but not for this.

Truth be told, I am rather keen on dropping by to try the other things on their menu – the pili-pili (I think they mean peri-peri) chicken, the Moroccan chicken, the Shajira – whatever that is…and I do love ayam percik! If the photographs on their Facebook page

…are anything to go by, they sure look really good!

In the meantime, I’ve dropped by this place again and this time around, I had their fried bihun (RM3.00)…

De'Mas fried bihun

…and yes, it is the same recipe again – one size fits all! Their noodles were great, the kway teow was all right but when it comes to their bihun, to me, it is NOT something to shout about either…but then again, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. I may not feel it was all that great but others may like it this way – we’ll never know.

It was a public holiday (Labour Day) yesterday…and Monday will be a holiday too replacing Sunday which is another public holiday (Wesak Day). So what have you been up to? Enjoying the extra long weekend, I hope…

  1. A very long weekend indeed. Need something to entertain my active kids. Haha.

I like that fried mihun. I am always go for mihun especially mamak or Malay style.

Indeed the Western breakfast set look nothing but pitiful and expensive. Hehe. Maybe you went there on a Monday?? Usually most food operators off on Monday.

No, it was a Wednesday, after dropping off my girl at 7.30 at the hotel for her official function. Ya…at least, there should be a sausage…or bits of it in the omelette.

  2. The omelette looks good, very buttery and fragrant.. But I prefer Western breakfast with French toast, ham & bacon πŸ™‚

You can’t get that at RM3.50, that’s for sure.

  3. Bihun looks better than the American breakfast. Bet you have a great time during this long weekend……jalan jalan cari makan with your loved ones.

Yes, got people coming to town, just started and I’m already so bloated… πŸ˜€

  4. quite an extensive menu for a relatively small stall … and not many stalls are so social media savvy! πŸ™‚

In-thing these days, I guess…free advertising via the social media.

  5. Well it depends on what they put inside the omelette. The omelette that I get in my cafeteria was RM 2.50 (omelette only, no bread and sides), and it was pathetic, only tiny bits of chopped tomato and probably one eighth of a frozen sausage worth of sausage bits. I only had it once and never again.. :/

No sausage, I think…just bits of tomato, maybe green peppers so if that was RM2.50 like yours…then RM1 for the toast and the baked beans would be expensive too. Like you, I sure would not want to have that again even though they did fry the omelette very well – tasted nice.

  6. hahaha.. food porn and we are really food porn bloggers! Sounds exotic in a way… hahaha…

Ours will not really turn people on lah…our photos not so seductive one. πŸ˜‰

  7. its always good to monopolize the place πŸ™‚ eat my food, or have nothing! πŸ˜›

You think so? Not really, I would say. If what you serve is no good, nobody will ever come back again and soon, you would have to golong tikar already.

  8. Yea, gathering, food hunt trips with friends and family for this long weekend… but i am working on Monday though, a project which is about to due…

Poor thing! Never mind, something is better than nothing, count your blessings! You could have been asked to work all through the weekend.

  9. Our Vesak Day is on June 1, no public holiday here tomorrow…

It is? Why different? June 1st holiday here again…the Gawai Dayak Festival! So nice, so many holidays…and that’s the school holiday time too, 2 weeks!
