Away from home…

Saturday morning last week was spent taking my girl’s new colleague from Kuching all around town to buy the stuff that she would need in the school/living quarters with a little bit of sightseeing thrown in…

Sungai Merah 1

…including a brief stop at Sungai Merah (Red River)…

Sungai Merah 2

…where the water is “red” or tea-like to be exact owing to the withered leaves that have fallen from the towering trees into the river upstream.

Come lunch time, we stopped by here for this platter of roast and barbecued meat…

…with a bit of roast chicken & duck, barbecued pork ribs and some very lovely roast pork…

This is one of my favourite places in town and of late, their chicken rice…

Chicken rice

…is pretty good too. Initially, they started off with serving plain white rice with one’s orders and then, they switched to their nothing-to-shout-about very much watered down version of the chicken rice but they have been improving since and what we had that day was quite good, I would say.

I saw that they had lor nui (stewed eggs) so I simply could not resist some of those…

Lor nui

…as well. All those, including the rice for the four of us, came up to RM26.00 (SGD10.00) only.

We did get their complimentary soup as well but I decided to order this (RM6.50)…

Mei Le soup 1

…to share from another stall in that same shop and all of us enjoyed that bowl of soup with a whole lot of ingredients added…

Mei Le soup 2

…very much.

As a matter of fact, my missus stopped by this same shop a few days earlier for lunch and I had their meat porridge (RM4.50)…

…with century egg added and I enjoyed it very much too. There is an egg and quite a bit of minced meat in the porridge.

Well, if anyone is wondering where this Mei Le Cafe is, it is on your left as you turn in from Jalan Pedada into Jalan Gambir, on your left after Delta Mall, right beside this place named Maple Leaf.
