What have you been doing lately…

As for me, I’ve been doing quite a bit of cooking especially with my girl home for the holidays, and like what any parent would do, I would try and cook some stuff that she would enjoy very much.

I know she enjoys western cuisine so I made this salad…

…of lettuce, two hard-boiled eggs, sliced, and slices of grilled bacon.

For the dressing…

…I just used the little bit of mayonnaise left in the fridge and I added some honey mustard, sugar and evaporated milk to it and I dare say the end result tasted pretty good.

It was a case of killing many birds with one stone. I grilled the bacon in a bit of butter which I later used to toss the potatoes, cut into chunks…after which I added a bit of salt and pepper and sprinkled parmesan cheese generously all over them before putting them in the oven to roast…

They sure turned out really well and my girl loved them very much.

I had the fat trimmed off the bacon and I melted that in a frying pan before adding some garlic which I fried till brown and in went the mushrooms…

…to which I added a bit of salt and pepper according to taste.

I guess that is what people call stretching the dollar/ringgit. Bacon is expensive here – I bought a packet of 9 thin slices for over RM12.00 and I used only 4 to cook three different dishes so it was not too bad actually. I put the rest back into the freezer for my girl to enjoy for breakfast with egg and toast or whatever.

This wasn’t western but on another day, I thought I would try and cook some pork the way my mother did – in soy sauce, no five spice powder involved. I took some chunks of the meat and marinated them in soy sauce and sugar and a pinch of salt. After sometime, I put everything in a cooking pot, added water, one whole bulb of garlic, a handful of peppercorn and some shitake mushroom…and boiled that for a while after which I turned the heat down and let it simmer for around an hour. To serve, I took the meat out and cut it into thin slices…

…and I had the sauce/gravy in a little bowl by the side to use as a dip and also to pour over our rice and eat. It was nice but no, it wasn’t like what my mum used to dish out. I wonder how she did it…or maybe, the soy sauce then was different, I’m not too sure.

Then one afternoon, I wanted to take my girl out for a movie but the mum wanted to go too so in the end, I let the two go together while I stayed at home. There are things I can do without and at the prices of tickets at the cineplexes these days, it would not hurt one bit to miss a movie or two but lately, I did get to watch some good ones on DVD like this one or this, both of which I enjoyed very much. They do not screen this more intellectual kind of shows here as there isn’t any market for them – so what we usually will get are those ghastly horror movies or fast-moving action movies with lots of punches, shooting. killing and bloodshed and car crashes thrown in for good measure…and cartoons only.

However, I did not sit around, idling the time away while the two ladies were out having fun. Instead, I decided to try out this recipe that I learnt from my girl and I sure was delighted that the pancakes…

…came out really well!!! Maybe I added a bit too much butter but it sure turned out even nicer with the extra rich buttery fragrance. My girl enjoyed them very much and that night, before calling it a day, she dropped by my room just to say thank you…and of course, when the girl is happy, the dad is happy too!

So, what have you been doing lately?

  1. Delicious homecooked meal! You are really a good good cook! The bestest homecooked meal on earth, wouldn’t wana eat out if I were Mel.. Oh today I learn something new, the mayo dressing.. Looks very rich and creamy, I like.. I don’t like plain salad, but if the salad has eggs, or potatoes, or salmon, or bacon, then yummmmzzz, bring it on! 🙂

We throw a lot of things in our salads, God forgive us…quail eggs, cocktail sausages, ham, shredded roast chicken, roast pork – I do prefer salads with these…not just greens!

  2. Not much other than planning my Xmas menu. Haha.

Lovely cooking. I would enjoy them myself too. Like that pork belly, look succulent. Yum yum.

All turned out great, very nice…thank God!

  3. Oh! Your salad is 100X better looking (and I bet better tasting) than that stupid one I had at The Salad Bar! Very nice meal you cooked there. Love what you did using bacon. Yes, bacon is expensive and you have managed to stretch it to the limit 🙂 Gosh, did you decorate the pancakes? So cute!

Yes, I added some Christmas decor to them – joining a photo contest, hoping to win some dining vouchers but they’re all in KL though. 😦

Exactly! They cannot even get a simple salad right – we’ve had our share of those here too. Anyone can just throw a few leaves of lettuce and add mayo…or they will add some miserable bits of bacon or smoked salmon or whatever and charge a bomb. Even if it’s cheap, I still think it is a rip-off…but if it is a truly a special dressing of their own and they do it really well, I would not mind paying. I guess many will just eat, never mind what…and feel it’s great that they’re dining on western cuisine, got class lor… *snigger…snigger*

  4. Lovely you have been cooking so much, and your photos are wonderful!

Thank you. Having the time of my life especially when the things I dished out turned out really great. 😉

  5. Nothing beats homecooked food especially for loved ones. Those pancakes looks yummylicious..

Very nice, extra nice with the extra buttery fragrance. Easy to cook too, I enjoyed that.

  6. I love the salad that you made for Melissa, looks so good. The pancakes too are so presentable, Arthur.

Yes, I was very pleased too…with myself. Hehehehehe!

  7. I love the way you present your pancakes. Can show it to Chef Ramsey already. hehe..

Adoi!!! So shy lah… This is good for own consumption only – but I did see a youtube video where he was making scrambled eggs and he burnt a toast! 😀 Looks like he’s human, after all, eh? 😉

  8. my first thought when i saw your first photo of the salad was … wah, which cafe did you order this at … cos it looks so good! and the pancakes pun banyak cantik 🙂

Oooooooo…..compliments from a celebrity food blogger – I am so so so so flattered. Thank you so much for your kind words. Hehehehehe!!!! 😉

  9. Ok, i will make the salad something like your one of these day if i am not lazy…

Very easy, not a problem doing that.

  10. Me? While you cook western, I have been doing asian chinese mama’s food.. boiling soup with pumpkin, and pumpkin and pumpkin… but with different ingredients here and there… sometimes I put corn and today I put lemongrass pumpkin with pepper soup… apa pun boleh! 🙂

Many things one can cook with pumpkin – just put in the oven and bake, also very nice…and very healthy too…but the pumpkin must be a good one, some are not so sweet, not so nice.

  11. Yummy pancakes!!!! ^^

Me? Ummm, well, I have been packing for the impending trip, helping my friend out with her university applications as well as some unplanned Christmas shopping.

You’re going somewhere? Gee! That’s nice!

  12. so much good food, nothing much on my side. sick, thanks to the weather.

Bad weather there? Oh dear! Hope it does not spoil your Christmas.

  13. So many cooking, want to fatten up Melissa before she go back to her school. 😄

Had been busy busy, work and home. Thought school holidays can relax but no. and two more weeks school start again.

Yes, not looking forward to it though… Poor thing has to go back to school. 😦

  14. Yeah, bacon is expensive here too!

It’s going to be even worse now that the oil crisis isn’t settled yet and the USD is at a high compared to our currency. We get bacon at around RM 20+ for 9-10 slices and that’s the cheapest commercial ones. The higher end stuff would cost even more, but it’s okay coz bacon is sooooo delicious, especially the fat rendered from top! 🙂

Oh dear! More expensive than here, it seems. Maybe they’ve a bigger market there. If they jack up the prices here, nobody will buy and they’ll be stuck with the stock.
