This is my favourite brand, and I am pretty sure it is the favourite of many too, when it comes to instant mee goreng (fried noodles). I haven’t had any for quite a while now – usually, I would just eat whatever my missus buys and leaves lying around the house or I would cook something else for breakfast.
However, when I dropped by the shop round the corner from my house the other day, I saw that they have come out with this new flavour – green chili…
…and at RM3.80 for a pack of five, I thought that was all right, less than 80 sen a packet…unlike some of the instant noodles that I see on the shelves at the shops these days.
I bought a pack and the other morning, I cooked one packet to try…
There was a packet of bumbu (seasoning) inside, a bit of sweet dark soy sauce and some green-coloured oil. I checked the ingredients and these are the contents – refined palm oil, green chili, onion, spices and permitted colouring – chlorophyllin. That last one, alongside the green chili used, probably explains the colour.
I was too lazy to dig into the freezer or the fridge to see if there was anything that could go with it so I just fried an egg…
…the way my mum used to do it – in a wok, with the crispy golden frills all round. Like what she used to do as well, I splashed the hot oil over the yolk to cook it so it would not so orange and raw-looking and of course, I made sure not to overcook it…unlike what I would get at those makan stalls at the shops here, there and everywhere.
After boiling the noodles to soften, I tossed them with all the ingredients provided and served…
– with the fried egg by the side.
Yes, it was very nice. I liked it a lot – very slightly spicy with a hint of that green (chili) taste, almost like the original but not exactly. It did not look as green as in the photograph on the pack or the packet though. Ah well!!! I guess it is not easy to be green…
Have a delightful weekend, everybody…and happy holidays, kids!!!
But how does it relate to “not easy being green”? haha
Hmmmm…actually, I was expecting you to come in and say something about the colour. I guess the explanation given is good enough?
Sometimes simple noodles like this can surely make our day!
A feast for many students away from home…but like everything else, moderation is the key. Once in a while is all right.
First look at the photograph on the pack gives me the impression of spinach noodles. That hint of green makes it looks nice from the usual noodles colour. Oh my, I love the cripsy golden edges of the fried egg. Enjoy your breakie. Nom!!!!…nom!!!!..
You need a wok to get the egg like that – can never do it with a pan. Ya…spinach noodles are green so I guess it isn’t that hard to be green – most people would be quite used to the colour…unlike the purple ones that I blogged about the other day.
Arthur…it ain’t easy being green…so says Kermit, my favourite Muppets characters of all time…we haven’t got this green chilli flavour here yey…love to try them…
You will eventually, I guess. Indomie is an international brand, available everywhere…like Maggi. This is very new, never saw it before.
hahahaha.. when i read the title, first thing that came into my mind – you don’t like to eat vege??!!
but after reading this post.. hahahaha.. i wanna try this weird cili hijau mee goreng !!
😀 Go ahead, grab a pack. I would say it is nice. If you like the original, you would like this too.
ooo, interesting flavour, though it does seem misleading that the greenness on the packaging isn’t replicated by the reality. it does almost look like a pesto-based pasta on the wrapping! or maybe a fusion thai-green-curry spaghetti 😀
That’s exactly what I thought. Dunno if I dunno how to prepare or what but the real thing as it turned out was quite a disappointment. I expected it to be like really really green.
Instant Noodles again! Wow… you are like my kids, they love noodles and noodles… but once I eat a packet, I will not touch it for a month or two…. 🙂 Well, that shows you are still a kid.. hehehee…
Indo mee is sold over here but not sure of these green packets one… will go and look see…
I just bought to try since it’s new…and the purple ones that day – my girl bought for me to eat as my niece gave me last time, I gave her to take to her jungle school to eat. I don’t usually buy – my missus may do that sometimes…so there are always noodles in the house. Nice or not, that’s another story. 😉
Love the egg with crispy golden frills! And the yolk oozzing out.. With a little soy sauce, i can eat it alone with plain rice. Need a wok and some skills to do that though 😦
Very easy, keep trying…oil must be hot and keep watch. Take out as soon as it is done perfectly the way you want it. My missus and I would fry and eat with rice sometimes too…when there’s “nothing to eat”.
Enjoy your weekend ya…
You too! Girl’s home for one week. Yipeeee!!!!!
see this! http://www.indomie.com/Product/Category/5 they have a variety of noodles according to each province…!
Can get in KL? Come, come…grab some nice ones and poslaju them over… 😉
and I tot it will be something like “save the earth” kinda post… XD
Unfortunately, no…though I may touch on those issues sometimes in my posts, just not this one.
Wah lau! See liao really beh tahan! Haven’t tried mi goreng flavor for quite some time!
This new one is pretty good, can try.
I think the one on the packet is over too green already!!!
I would agree.
My daughter says that looks really good. She’s peering over my shoulder as she eats her own noodle dish.
About twenty minutes ago, I prepared a late night noodle dish for my daughter. She was hungry. It is what I call fast food. I tossed some ground beef in with the noodles, added a fried egg and a few veggies which were stir fried. To that I added some freshly ground seasonings. Quick meal done in less than seven minutes, she said it’s really good. She’s almost finished it now and there was enough leftover so she said she’s saving it as a snack tomorrow.
Kids love noodles. I did too when I was small. My girl is more into pasta and stuff though, not so much our local noodles… 😦
How I miss school holidays hah…hah…Usually photos on food packaging are color enhanced and makes us feel disappointed when what we cook don’t come out that way. Quite an interesting flavor, I think I will like it. By the way, green is my favorite color.
Grab a pack, give it a try. It’s pretty good!
YAY! Kermit! Just saw the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon signing with Kermit – the St. Patrick’s Day episode – on Hulu Plus….
Oh? I wonder what song they sang. Hope to see it on youtube soon…
Very, very interesting! I haven’t seen this around – will definitely keep an eye out for it and try it when I see it.
It does seem interesting, this new flavor.
It’s nice. I like it.
