Save it for later…

I mentioned the other day that Melissa took it upon herself to cook dinner…with the doting mum hovering around to lend a hand. I did not peep to have a look so I wouldn’t know who exactly did the most work. LOL!!! Anyway, we had grilled lamb with some leftover beef thrown in as well…

…and there was really too much for us to finish so we saved it to heat it up and eat the next day. Unfortunately, it was kind of dry and hard or tough and needless to say, we just had a bit more of it and as a result of that, we still had quite a bit left. My missus asked whether any of us still wanted to eat it and was thinking of throwing it away. Tsk! Tsk! For one thing, our imported Australian or New Zealand beef and lamb do not come cheap and it would be such a waste to just dump what was left into the trash can. I told her to put it back into the fridge and I would use it for something more manageable the following day.

What I did was I cut the meat into very tiny bits – perhaps our knives are no longer sharp or it is harder to mince meat that is already cooked and that would explain why I did what I did…and then, I threw in one Bombay onion, chopped and some crackers that I had pounded using the lesung batu ( mortar and pestle). You can use any crackers you like as long as they are the bland or the salty ones like cheese crackers, for instance. Lastly, I added an egg, beaten…and mixed everything together till it all became kind of sticky and could be rolled…and that was exactly what I did. I rolled it into round balls and pressed them down to flatten them to form patties and I deep fried them in a bit of oil…

I did not add any seasoning as the meat had been marinated already before the grilling so there would be enough taste and flavours without any necessity of adding some more but I guess you would need to do that if you’re thinking of making the same using fresh minced meat.

Nope, the black patches in the patty…

…were not burnt parts – those would be the colour of the marinated and grilled meat.

I managed to make five for lunch and Melissa had two and my missus and I had one each…and obviously, Melissa loved them so much as she asked me what I added and did to make those patties. Of course, we saved the solitary one that was left for her for dinner and she saved it till she had eaten everything else that evening before she finished it off.

She has this habit of putting what she likes the most by the side to save it for later…ever since she was small. I did not know at the time and I thought she was leaving behind the stuff she did not like and she was so upset when I just picked those up and popped everything into my mouth! How was I to know? Anyway, after she told me why she did that, I never did it again. Hehehehehehe!!!!

For one thing, I wonder how many of you out there would do the same? Personally, I would eat the goodies first as I would think that having had my fill, I would not enjoy anything that is nice quite as much anymore after that. Come, tell me – do you eat what is nice first or do you, like Melissa, save it for later?

  1. Those patties look good, the mortar and pestles has many uses. I occasionally use it with moist foods such as garlic, onion, ginger, tumeric root. I mostly use it with dry ingredients.

It depends, if I’m not really hungry I’ll eat what I like most first. That way I’ll be able to eat what I like most. Otherwise I’d have to postpone and by that time it might be eaten by my daughter.

Hah!!! At least my daughter takes it and puts it by the side of the plate – keep it safe for later. I’d eat all that I like first. As for the mortar and pestle, we use it for moist stuff here, but also for dry ones sometimes – maybe things like the crackers…or peanuts, if we need them crushed.

Oh good idea about peanuts, hadn’t thought about that. My problem is, I can’t eat a lot at once so if I move onto something else I’d be full in not time. I eat several (about 4-6) small meals throughout the day.

That’s why if I really like something, you better believe I’ll eat it first! I learned that lesson quickly, saving food for later means I might not be able to enjoy it, if my daughter sees it she might eat the food. She’ll ask of first, and of course I’ll say yes you can have that. sobsThin as a rail but my goodness can she eat! 🙂

Some people have all the luck in the world – good metabolism rate. My girl too! To the most, she may have rounder, fleshier cheeks instead of the sunken ones when she’s all stressed out and doesn’t eat well. Ya…I too think that you would not enjoy something nice as much if you’re already full.

We crush peanuts for use in stuff like spring rolls and in Thai cuisine, they sprinkle it over their fried noodles, fried rice and so on.

  2. Yeah I kinda like Melissa. Save it for later. In the end, always frustrated when I found that there’s no more later. All gone eaten by ‘black head cat’ (as my mother always told me.). Lol!!

Have you tried making Ramen burger? If you do, I would love to learn from your ‘tutorial’. hehe.

Nope, and I don’t think I’d be doing it either. My friend tried, you can have a look at it here:

  3. I would eat the best first. Lol. Why the saving? After all it still end up in the tummy.

And I dont waste food. We finished what ever on the table. I love lambs. It is hard to find lambs in Sibu and I have been thinking of buying some lambs, bacons in Kuching and bring over. Lol. Where can I buy those in Sibu, Arthur?

Beef too! No fresh beef in Sibu. You may want to get that at SaraBif or elsewhere.

All beef and lamb here imported Aussie or NZ ones – can buy at all leading supermarkets like Giant, Delta Mall…or you can get from CCK. Some other places, they look so over-frozen, I wouldn’t want to buy. I hear Giant, they’ll help you cut and slice.

    1. I also dont like those over frozen meat. I like those ready cut fresh meat like those in Choice supermarket. I have not yet venture to Giant but did buy some bacons from Delta Mall.

      Thanks.

I think you can get the same at Giant – fresh cuts…but ham, bacon…better go to Delta Mall or Ta Kiong. Not much at Giant.

      1. Hubby bought bacon once from Ta Kiong but we dont like it. Because it has soft bones and not real bacon. 😦 I think they package the bacon themselves.

Nope, they get from some place else – I hear there’s a shop somewhere in the Kingwood, Li Hua Hotels area – you can see the yellow sticker on the packs. The sticker does not look all that appealing – and that put me off from buying. Besides, they’re sooooo expensive! 😦

  4. The patty looks tempting and best if dip in chilli sauce. For me, the best goes into my tummy first but my kids would save the best for the last. Have a great weekend with more home cooked food.

Very nice. Can make fresh ones, use minced meat. I think I will do that again…when I’m in the mood. 😉

  5. Yea, lamb/steak is best to eat on the very day itself, cannot keep overnight…

Yup! That was why we hardly ate much of what was left the next day…and there was so much, so I saved that to make the patties.

  6. It’s so nice tht Melissa always cooks for you, hope one day my kids will cook for me too! Haha.

They will! I can see that they’re already enjoying lending you a hand. So good.

  7. My girl’s eating habit is exactly like Melissa! She’ll leave the things she likes most till the end. There’s one time she purposely left a small pc of fish roe (she loves this!) by the side of her plate and I took the plate for washing! You can imagine her jumping up and down looking for it! hahahaha

Hahahahaha!!!! Not as bad as me picking it up and popping it in my mouth…and she was dumbstruck by what I did! 😀

  8. Any leftover food esp the meat and the bones, all will go to my 4 legged family member… she will be most grateful!! hahahaa… Anyway, good idea of yours to make patties… and most important, Melissa loves it so much that she leaves it behind for later? Something like Save the best for last… hahahaa… As for me, I wallop everything on sight.. nice or not, I won’t leave it behind.. I worry there is another “Arthur” in my house, he might put it in his mouth and that’s the end of it… hahahaha….

Hahahahaha!!!! Any of your sons like me or not? 😀

  9. Used to save things for later, now I kinda try to evenly distribute though the last bite generally is the best thing on plate. Hehe very scientific.

So in a way, you do save the best for last, not me. I think I’m basically greedy…will wallop all my favourites first and try the rest later, will just leave aside if they’re not all that great.

  10. nice, no wastage there, and it came out really nicely as well. Now you got me feeling hungry. Got to go grab a bite before dinner.. no wonder I keep getting fatter, blame it on you 😛

You? Fat? That will be the day! Not with all the partying and social activites – sure is great to be young! 😀

  11. that’s an inventive way of turning cooked food into something new! 😀 heh, when i was young, i’d save the best for last too. nowadays i’m not sure anymore, depends on mood 😀

Wahhhhh!!!! Driven by mood these days? Not too moody, I hope. 😀

  12. I always save the best for the last!!! =]

Must be the thing about young people today. I used to hate vegetables when I was young – would leave those till last

  13. I am like Melissa, I save the best for last too. But I will make sure I put it on my plate before anyone else gets to it!

Ya, we even do that for her if it’s something for everyone to share. 😉

  14. People who put aside the things they love to eat, last, are careful thinker and very meticulous in nature. Those who gobbled up everything upfront do not have a hoot of what the future brings.
Something like que Sera Sera whatever will be, will be..
    Am I spot on, man?

Gee!!! I do think you’re right! My daughter’s the former…and I am the latter. 😀

  15. Such a waste to throw away. I normally make stews or stir fry them with other ingredients if there’s left over roast.

I love stews…but not sure if the meat would go soft and tender anymore since it was already cooked.
