I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard fan but I’ve loved quite a few of his songs since his 1971 solo album, “Every picture tells a story” with songs like Maggie May and Reason to believe and there was also his cover of Etta James/Chicken Shack’s I’d rather go blind. and I always consider his I was only joking as some sort of a biography of mine in more ways than one…
I’m never too fond of that karaoke favourite, Sailing, but I did like I don’t wanna talk about it when it was first released and his more recent Have I told you lately that I love you has always been in my repertoire. There are others that I like, of course, including one that many probably do not know that he sang it first – the very popular That’s what friends are for featured in the movie Night Shift and later became a monster hit for Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder.
He did have some kind of a jazz or big band album somewhere along the way but I’m never crazy about that genre so I did not pay much attention to it but recently, after some 20 years, he released a new album entitled Time and from that particular album, I quite like the song It’s over but it was this one that touched me deeply…
This is about a father-daughter relationship and the lyrics are simply beautiful, I must say:
If an old friend lets you down
And a true love can’t be found
Till the blue skies come around
I’ll be right by your side
Journey far and travel safe
Make this world a better place
And keep that smile upon your face
I’ll be right by your side
There may be oceans in between us now
But I think about you every living hour
No, don’t forget me now that we’re apart
Just open up that great big loving heart
[Chorus]
And you’ll always be
You’ll always be
You’ll always be a part of me
Take your time to embrace romance
Teach your children how to sing and dance
Love may hurt but it’s worth the chance
I’ll be right by your side
Try to be the best you can
Show compassion to every man
And always take the higher ground
I’ll be right by your side
I hear your laughter echo through this house
I miss you, all of this there is no doubt
I wasn’t perfect, this I would admit
I was always trying to make the pieces fit
Don’t ask me now where all the time has gone
I’ve loved you since the minute you were born
So many times we have laughed and cried
I see you now – it fills my heart with pride
…and unashamedly, I would admit that it moved me to tears…for obvious reasons. Excuse me, pass me the tissue, please! Sobssss!!!
Awww. The oldies.
Two new ones…very nice! Not too fond of the others on the latest album though… 😦
Auwww……so sweet….Daughters will always have a special place in their father’s hearts!
So very true! 🙂
awwww, this is such a sweet post!! next time i shall buy you two boxes of tissue when we meet again~~ hehehe!! 😀
The six-box pack would be nice… Hehehehehe!!!!
Oh dear, the lyrics are indeed very meaningful… as parents, our kids are part of our lives, if not whole… for me, my kids are my everything… they are my meaning in life…
That’s so very true! Our lives revolve entirely around them…
That is sweet….tissue not enough la…hv to use towel
Yes, my trade mark – the hand towel! LOL!!! 😀
Good morning Suituapui…
Morning!
Oh, love oldies, English & Mandarin. Sweet & meaningful lyrics. Our kids are our greatest gift from GOD. Melissa looks so sweet in the pix.
Praise the Lord, and for that, I give thanks each passing day that I’ve been thus blessed.
I love the good old classics, be it in English or Mandarin. =) The lyrics are meaningful and definitely tugs at the heart. It’s similar to “Butterfly Kisses”.
Oh. I love his rendition of “First Cut is the Deepest”.
I’m ok with that one…and some of the others as well. I love “Butterfly Kisses” but my daughter hates the part at the end about getting married and leaving the father… Hehehehehehe!!!!
Beautiful lyrics. A meaningful song to start the week. Tissue? I usually wipe on my sleeves!
Nice change from the usual food post, I guess? 😉
ooo, i’m a fan too. i can’t choose just one song of his that’s my favorite. i love ‘reason to believe,’ ‘i don’t want to talk about it’ and ‘downtown train’ (that’s my top three. no. 4 would be ‘rhythm of my heart’) 😀 and ooo, that’s a great song indeed for your father-daughter relationship 😀
Yes, it is indeed. I love Downtown Train too…and Every beat of my heart, not Rhythm of my heart – not too crazy over his faster songs though I do enjoy Passion and Do ya’ think I’m sexy? 😉 LOL!!!
I understand he is having a new album out now??? I love to listen to his “Sailing” and “Have I told you lately that I love you”
I think he released it in May – the songs are all on youtube.
Aawww.. this is so sweet. I need tissues too.
Although my papa doesn’t say it.. but I know he loves me too. 🙂
I’m sure he does… 🙂
Such a sweet post!!
Rod Steward is famous around your age right?
Nope! I was already in my 20’s when he came into the music scene… 😉
You are feeling the empty nest syndrome. Your girl still comes back during the weekends. For some parents whose children study/work overseas, it is worse. BTW, Downtown Train is not Rod Stewart’s original song, tho I like his version best.
Yes, thankfully.
And yes, Rod does covers of other people’s songs like The first cut is the deepest, Reason to believe, Have I told you lately – they’re all other people’s originals.
Aww.. so sweet! Melissa would be so touched. Nice picture of her.
Thanks. 😉
he is my idol
He is? 😉
You’re a good father buddy! Melissa is lucky to have you. 🙂
The lyrics are meaningful, love the song, though I’m not a fan of Rod Steward.
Yup! Exceptionally nice song, love it!
too bad my speaker aren’t working but then again reading the lyrics
was enough for me to feel that song, no wonder you were in tear due to that
great lyrics,it was well written and very poetic
Oh dear! Once working, can get new ones. They’re not expensive these days…
Nothing quite like a father’s (or a mother’s) love for a child. And very enigmatic expression on that serious face.
LOL!!! That’s my girl – serious…not like the father, gila gila one. LOL!!! 😀
I seriously JUST listened to “Maggie May” less than 5 mins ago! LOL 🙂
Gee! What a coincidence! Deja vu?
He is such a classic singer with that unmistaken voice!
Yes, unmistakably Rod Stewart!
he is a classic! and that last photo of Melissa is simply gorgeous.. well captured! Proud papa & his pure love…
Indeed! My one and only… 🙂
melissa is very beautiful 🙂
My sweet little girl… 😉
Nick asked me what my life was before he was born. I told him his late father and I are very carefree and fun loving. Never worry when no money in the bank but our life changed after he was born. Everything is about him. This will always be till my last breath.
Exactly! It’s all about them, the loves of our lives.
Hi Arthur! We can feel the love you have for Melissa! Not just this post, but from almost every of your post. Even if it is just a normal makan place review or your home cooking post, you will not fail to mention your girl and your affection!
I know how you feel as a father. I have 3 kids and love them all.
Lucky you, 3 to love…and lucky Melissa, she gets it all. Hehehehehehe!!!! 😉
