Another time, another place…

I just had bubur cacar or what they call momocacar at another place not too long ago but I was in the vicinity of Rejang Park here in Sibu that day and there is one very popular place in the area…

LLC

– one of the shops on the ground floor of the now-closed-down cinema complex. I would usually see a lot of people there mid-afternoon enjoying their cendol, kompia and what not…

LL menu

I remember I had the ang tao peng (listed as ice kacang merah on the menu) before but was not exactly thrilled by it so this time around, I decided to try the momo-zaza

LL mmc

Gosh!!! As far as the name is concerned, it does not seem to be getting any better but I thought this version had a South American Latino ring to it and is kind of sexy, what do you think? Momo-zaza… LOL!!! As for the taste, I thought it was kurang manis, kurang lemak – not sweet enough and not enough santan (coconut milk). The momocacar at the other place is definitely a lot better.

I also tried the stuffed kompia

LL kompia

I asked for the ones stuffed with pork belly and served with the stew gravy but I guess the boy did not hear me and I got these baked/oven-toasted ones stuffed with minced meat. They were pretty good though not as nice as the deep-fried ones here…but at 80 sen each, these are a whole lot cheaper so I’m not complaining.

Another time, on a different day, my missus, Melissa and I stopped by this hotel in town for their set lunch at their cafe. For RM9.00++, you get a free drink…

Garden set lunch - drink

Nothing much – just orange cordial and not something that people would get excited about these days. When I was young, there would be a bottle in the fridge – Sun Valley orange or grenadine…or sometimes, we had Cascade blackberry BUT we were specifically told not to touch it! It was meant to be for guests dropping by just so they would get served some drinks while at the house. Unfortunately, kids being kids, many a time I succumbed to the temptation and when my mum noticed the level getting lower and lower, I was promptly accorded my due reward – THE CANE! LOL!!!

Anyway, back to the lunch set, we also got this very nice complimentary bowl of soup…

GSL - soup

I think they had Chinese cabbage and tomato in it.

Melissa opted for their creamy fish fillet…

Fish

…while my missus had the beef with black pepper sauce…

beef

…and I had the lamb…

lamb

All of them were really good and came with a bit of very nicely-fried ladies’ fingers by the side together with a slice of cucumber and some nasi lemak sambal on top…and rice.

Of course I would not think that it was cheap but at least, there was none of that problem of an msg overload that we would find at some other places…and we all enjoyed our orders very much. I guess that was all that mattered.

  1. 80 sen for the stuffed kompia! Cheap!!!

I thought I saw ‘momo zaza’ as mong mong cha cha…Hehehe

Cheap and nice – that’s what I like.

  2. The food looks delicious, was the black pepper sauce spicy? I was going to say my mom would have liked the beef dish but she can’t tolerate anything spicy. However, I love hot & spicy foods.

This one, they probably used a bit only so it did not taste strong. I don’t like black pepper sauce – I hate it when I bite into the bits of peppercorn. McD’s here uses the sauce for some of their burgers – definitely not my favourite. It’s not exactly spicy as in the case of chilies – the pepper kind of spicy which I don’t really like. That’s why I do not have the sauce in the house and I will not use it in my cooking. Would rather use freshly ground pepper powder if I feel like it.

  3. The momozaza is a rather catchy name but by the look of it, meh.. no thank you. The rest of the dishes though, look delicious especially the kompia 🙂

Ya…I’d stick to the one at Thomson Corner – much nicer…or their ang tao peng. Best!!! The kompia was good – I liked the filling, very tasty.

  4. All the food above are making me drool and it is only 8.05am!! Now there is a saying for the bloggers… “The camera always get to “eat first” before we humans can start!” hahhaaa…

Yes…but I do it very quickly, just simply click, so the people concerned will not get put off, having to wait too long to start eating.

  5. wow 80cents! that’s a very good deal! Less sweeten dessert and less coconut milk good for your health mah LOL 😛

I guess so…but not so nice mah! I’d rather give it a miss. Hehehehehe!

  6. LOL… I bet the cane was worth it though. I remember having caught stealing from the cookie jar too when I was younger. But lucky me, I was only reprimanded, no need to makan rotan. 😛

During our time, the rotan was the word of law! No questions asked. Hehehehehe!!!!!

  7. Awesome food but momo zaza looks dull. I think my momo cha cha looks and taste a whole lot better. Self praise, hehehe!!!…

Ya…I’m coming over to Kuching. Going to treat me to your momo zaza…and your kacang ma or not? 😉

    1. Sure, when are you coming? … but then when compare to your cooking, sure will give me a 2 thumbs down!!!…

No lah! It will be a flying visit – Melissa has something on and I had to go with her. Will let you know when I go over for a holiday or something…and I’ll invite myself to your house for dinner. So thick-skinned hor… Muahahahahaha!!!!

  8. There is a homemade kompia in Sibu, very nice and cost rm 0.80/pc….very nice.

Where? Homemade? Electric oven? If so, fail already…no need to say anymore.

  9. RM9.00++ for a hotel set lunch is not cheap? I think it’s dirt cheap leh!

There’s another place here – only RM6 and the sets are very nice too. But RM9++ is ok, considering the venue…not kopitiam one.

  10. I like Bubur Buah Panas (5 Wei Tang)…erm…both names like doesn’t tally pun.haha…
simply becos I couldn’t get it here! 😀

It should be bubur buang panas – in Hokkien, we call it gor bee th’ng or 5-flavour soup.

  11. “this version had a South American Latino ring to it and is kind of sexy”.. i can never relate this to bubur cha-cha at all.. *faintz* hahaha!!

Cha cha cha is a latin dance mah…and there was this sexbomb in the 50’s – Zsa Zsa Gabor…

    1. hahaha, the 50s?? aiyoh, i wasn’t even born that time lah.. but momo chacha sounds kinky in chinese lah, it means raba-raba dan ramas-ramas~~ 😀

I know “more high” means touch the private part… That’s about all I know, dunno Cantonese.

      1. Hahahaa! Good one, SK! I’ve been waiting for someone to come along and share the Cantonese literal translation of “momo-chacha” with Arthur! Are you ‘blushing’, Arthur? 😉

Me blush? You should ask Shereen the “more high” joke that I told her. I think I did, can’t remember now.

  12. Another time, another place – you must be a fan of Engelbert Humperdinck? Food looks good and prices very reasonable.

Hah!!! You’re obviously not very young since you know Engelbert… LOL!!! I do love some of his songs. Yup, all very reasonable…worth going for it.

  13. I like bubur cacar. I do not like sweet potatoes but when it is cooked in a bubur cacar, I love it a lot. Is the soup from the sets a little bit oily? I hope it is just a reflection as I do not like oily soup.

Ya, it’s the reflection. I like the food here – not oily, not all msg…like some of those chap fan places. Never mind even if it is cheap – no, thank you. I love sweet potatoes cooked in any way… 😉

  14. Momo-zaza? Hee..hee…what a funny name 😀 The set lunch looks good but looks like the portions are quiet small.

Portions ok, just nice…not too heavy for lunch, will make one sleepy the rest of the day.

  15. MoMo Za Za?? hahahhahahahhahahha..Maybe the boss is the truly Sibuan, direct translate from foochow, at least mine not bad, read as mo mo cha cha.

Now make me wondering why the shop at Rejang Park so “cute” i think there is another one the shop name is “jing jing” ? If put both together, ” leong leong & jing jing” it will be the meaning of bling bling!! hahahhaha

Last trip back too rush, didn’t have any kompia, this round must go and have some.

Just about a week to go… You can have all you want! 😉

  16. There’re so many choices of desserts! I think I’d order all of them if I am there, hahaha xD

Not so good. Better at the other place – lots there too…of all the colours of the rainbow.

  17. ahhh, the momo-zaza looks like creamy-starchy comfort food to me. i’d order without even half a second of hesitation that if i saw its picture on a menu 😀

I guess it’s a bit starchy from the yam and the sweet potatoes…and they had sago pearls inside too…though only a little. I would love more. On the whole, I did not think it tasted all that great here – would rather go to the other place.

  18. Bubur cha cha is my favourite, I don’t dare to cook it myself, as it has santan. Too high calories for my consumption.

Not my favourite…but I would eat if there’s any. I prefer ang tao peng anytime.

  19. Momozaza is one of my favourite dessert. I like my dessert cold 🙂

Gosh! It seems kinda popular… I’m more into ang tao peng….or even cendol.

  20. It had been a while I last had bubur cha cha….. I only like the soup but not those yam and sweet potatoes. The food in the hotel doesn’t look cheap for such portion….but then, once a while, should just enjoy.

Not really crazy about the yam but I love sweet potatoes. Yup…once in a while, pamper oneself…no need to sit in hot, stuffy coffee shop but most importantly, the food here is nice.

  21. Guess they were charging for the ambience? RM9 ++ for hotel is ok I guess but I did think the portion of the meat/seafood looked small.

Quite enough for me so I would think this would be fine for most people. Ya…must consider the place, the aircon comfort and all.

  22. I love bubur chacha, but it must be the simple version of only yam, sweet potatoes and black eyed peas – and hot, not the iced version. It’s going on my to-eat list, yuuummms!

Nothing hot for me! I’m hot stuff enough… Hehehehehe!!!!

  23. food looks good enough. Chairs also should be comfy. Nice to eat

Yup! None of those plastic ones. These days, the quality’s so bad that the legs will spread out when I sit on them. Tsk! Tsk!

  24. Momo-zaza – the sound of it makes me want to dance. 🙂

Oh…so your Mom had the cane. My dad on the other hand had the belt. I feel so scared whenever I did something wrong and he is going home. My butt aches just thinking of the punishment. Ahehehe

Hah!!! So you’ve been naughty to, eh? Wink! Wink! LOL!!! 😀

  25. Latino momo zaza?! I like! Haha… But I would prefer the hot version.

I’m quite interested in the savoury kompia… definitely not available here.

You too! I like it cold… Kompia? You will have to come over if you wanna try that. MATTA Fair is on right now – check the airlines. You may be able to grab some real bargains! Quick! Quick!
