I just had bubur cacar or what they call momocacar at another place not too long ago but I was in the vicinity of Rejang Park here in Sibu that day and there is one very popular place in the area…
– one of the shops on the ground floor of the now-closed-down cinema complex. I would usually see a lot of people there mid-afternoon enjoying their cendol, kompia and what not…
I remember I had the ang tao peng (listed as ice kacang merah on the menu) before but was not exactly thrilled by it so this time around, I decided to try the momo-zaza…
Gosh!!! As far as the name is concerned, it does not seem to be getting any better but I thought this version had a South American Latino ring to it and is kind of sexy, what do you think? Momo-zaza… LOL!!! As for the taste, I thought it was kurang manis, kurang lemak – not sweet enough and not enough santan (coconut milk). The momocacar at the other place is definitely a lot better.
I also tried the stuffed kompia…
I asked for the ones stuffed with pork belly and served with the stew gravy but I guess the boy did not hear me and I got these baked/oven-toasted ones stuffed with minced meat. They were pretty good though not as nice as the deep-fried ones here…but at 80 sen each, these are a whole lot cheaper so I’m not complaining.
Another time, on a different day, my missus, Melissa and I stopped by this hotel in town for their set lunch at their cafe. For RM9.00++, you get a free drink…
Nothing much – just orange cordial and not something that people would get excited about these days. When I was young, there would be a bottle in the fridge – Sun Valley orange or grenadine…or sometimes, we had Cascade blackberry BUT we were specifically told not to touch it! It was meant to be for guests dropping by just so they would get served some drinks while at the house. Unfortunately, kids being kids, many a time I succumbed to the temptation and when my mum noticed the level getting lower and lower, I was promptly accorded my due reward – THE CANE! LOL!!!
Anyway, back to the lunch set, we also got this very nice complimentary bowl of soup…
I think they had Chinese cabbage and tomato in it.
Melissa opted for their creamy fish fillet…
…while my missus had the beef with black pepper sauce…
…and I had the lamb…
All of them were really good and came with a bit of very nicely-fried ladies’ fingers by the side together with a slice of cucumber and some nasi lemak sambal on top…and rice.
Of course I would not think that it was cheap but at least, there was none of that problem of an msg overload that we would find at some other places…and we all enjoyed our orders very much. I guess that was all that mattered.

The food looks delicious, was the black pepper sauce spicy? I was going to say my mom would have liked the beef dish but she can’t tolerate anything spicy. However, I love hot & spicy foods.
This one, they probably used a bit only so it did not taste strong. I don’t like black pepper sauce – I hate it when I bite into the bits of peppercorn. McD’s here uses the sauce for some of their burgers – definitely not my favourite. It’s not exactly spicy as in the case of chilies – the pepper kind of spicy which I don’t really like. That’s why I do not have the sauce in the house and I will not use it in my cooking. Would rather use freshly ground pepper powder if I feel like it.
The momozaza is a rather catchy name but by the look of it, meh.. no thank you. The rest of the dishes though, look delicious especially the kompia 🙂
Ya…I’d stick to the one at Thomson Corner – much nicer…or their ang tao peng. Best!!! The kompia was good – I liked the filling, very tasty.

Rich in monetary terms? It was ok…not too expensive. Would cost more if we were to go a la carte.

There is a homemade kompia in Sibu, very nice and cost rm 0.80/pc….very nice.

There’s another place here – only RM6 and the sets are very nice too. But RM9++ is ok, considering the venue…not kopitiam one.

It should be bubur buang panas – in Hokkien, we call it gor bee th’ng or 5-flavour soup.

I like bubur cacar. I do not like sweet potatoes but when it is cooked in a bubur cacar, I love it a lot. Is the soup from the sets a little bit oily? I hope it is just a reflection as I do not like oily soup.
Ya, it’s the reflection. I like the food here – not oily, not all msg…like some of those chap fan places. Never mind even if it is cheap – no, thank you. I love sweet potatoes cooked in any way… 😉

I guess it’s a bit starchy from the yam and the sweet potatoes…and they had sago pearls inside too…though only a little. I would love more. On the whole, I did not think it tasted all that great here – would rather go to the other place.
Bubur cha cha is my favourite, I don’t dare to cook it myself, as it has santan. Too high calories for my consumption.
Not my favourite…but I would eat if there’s any. I prefer ang tao peng anytime.

It had been a while I last had bubur cha cha….. I only like the soup but not those yam and sweet potatoes. The food in the hotel doesn’t look cheap for such portion….but then, once a while, should just enjoy.
Not really crazy about the yam but I love sweet potatoes. Yup…once in a while, pamper oneself…no need to sit in hot, stuffy coffee shop but most importantly, the food here is nice.
Guess they were charging for the ambience? RM9 ++ for hotel is ok I guess but I did think the portion of the meat/seafood looked small.
Quite enough for me so I would think this would be fine for most people. Ya…must consider the place, the aircon comfort and all.
I love bubur chacha, but it must be the simple version of only yam, sweet potatoes and black eyed peas – and hot, not the iced version. It’s going on my to-eat list, yuuummms!
