Just for a day…

The morning my friend, Ivan, arrived in Sibu, we stopped by here for the kampua noodles…

Soon Hock pian sip kampua

I ordered the pian sip- kampua combo so we got the meat dumplings instead of those few thin slices of boiled meat. I also ordered the RM3.00 special instead of the usual RM2.30-2.50, requesting for extra dumplings and this was what we got. Incidentally, this is Huai Bin‘s favourite in town but Ivan said that he liked the noodles at this other place more but he felt that the pian sip here was nicer and I would concur. That other place never had nice pian sip in the past but lately, they have improved somewhat but theirs are definitely not the best in town.

I also ordered the traditional Foochow mee sua (thread/string noodles)…

…to share for longevity and prosperity. This was from another stall in that same coffee shop and though it was quite nice, we felt it was a bit oily and could do with a little more of the traditional Foochow red wine. One thing’s for sure, if given a choice, I would definitely head elsewhere or cook my own at home.

For our drinks, Ivan had the 3-layer teh-c peng special while I had my usual kopi-o peng

Soon Hock drinks

Among some other things, Ivan brought us this…

Pomelo

– the celebrated pomelo from Ipoh, this large ancestor of the grapefruit that signifies abundance, as the Chinese word for pomelo sounds like the word for “to have.”

That same day, I noticed that our pussy willows were blooming…

Pussy willow

My missus had stuck some stems into a pot and used them for decoration for the festive season and I had noticed earlier that they were sprouting leaves and now the buds were flowering. Well, if these are indications of a forthcoming windfall, that has yet to happen…unfortunately. LOL!!!

Well, Ivan left the following day but we did manage to drop by here for lunch first and of course, we had to have the midin (wild jungle fern) fried with belacan (dried prawn paste)…

MMS midin

Actually when we were placing our orders, we were informed that they had run out of midin (they did not have any either at the restaurant where we went for dinner the previous night) but a few minutes later, the waitress came back and said that the midin had been delivered and we could change our order if we wanted…and we did. What I suspected was that the supply was dwindling due to the heavy demand over the Chinese New Year festive season when every Tom, Dick or Harry would be home for the celebration…and probably, they were reserving whatever they had for regular patrons and when the lady boss realised that it was me in the corner, she sent the waitress back to our table to tell us that we could have midin, after all.

Melissa wanted the creamy butter prawns again…

…and this time around, they certainly seemed very generous with the rich thick gravy. Yum! Yum!

I ordered their salted egg pork ribs to try…

Salted egg pork

…and it was good. I would not mind having that again sometimes.

We never had this before either- their sea cucumber fried with egg…

Sea cucumber with egg

Long ago, they used sharks’ fins but they do not do that now and at one time, they used tung hoon (glass noodles) in place of the offensive stuff. All of us loved this very much – it certainly was pretty good, I would say.

We had the Foochow-style tofu soup as well – the one they cook with minced meat and canned oysters and Ivan loved it a lot – he said it tasted like sharks’ fins soup and he actually liked the food here more, compared to what we had for dinner the night before.

Well, not long after lunch, I sent him back to the airport to catch his flight home. Thank you so much, Ivan, for everything and especially for taking the trouble to come by just to extend your Happy Chinese New Year greetings. It certainly was very nice and sweet of you and here’s hoping that you will have a wonderfully awesome Year of the $$$$$$$$nake ahead too!

  1. I love the kampua at Soon Hock! 🙂

I like their pian nuk too, I usually order that as an add on to the noodles though. I’ve already eaten here since I came back, it’s a place I must go for my kampua fix.

They do have excellent pian sip but I didn’t know they serve Foochow style mee sua too! What nice choice chicken cuts they have.

Ming Mei Shi! I wanted to go there tonight but we ended up at Maple Leaf instead.

Nice of Ivan to bring all that along! 😀

Ya, it certainly was nice of him. I must drop by Maple Leaf soonest to try the burger you had. The last time I went was so long ago – after I saw the smoked duck you had there. Not too fond of the place but if the food’s good, everything else is secondary. 😉 Don’t go to Soon Hock for the mee sua – it seemed the chu char people at the back had called it a day and the coffee shop people are using that part of the shop to sell a few items including the mee sua. If it’s mee sua that you want, go to TOTO Cafe at the end of that same block – the stall there sells very good mee sua, some would say it’s the best in town.

    1. Oh yes, i didn’t know Soon Hock got mee suah too. Didn’t see that last time. Yes, TOTO cafe’s mee suah is still the best!

Nothing great, don’t bother. Just stick to TOTO…

  2. Looks like so much fun…that’s a great sign ..this year is gonna be a great year..What is this pian sip kam pua thingy? Are they similar to wan tan mee?

Let’s just say they’re distant cousins, very distant.

  3. That was definitely a whole lot of yummy food. I blame myself for hopping to your blog this early and guess I am drooling over the food now. The blooming certainly signify, ermmm…huat tua cai and guess Cai Sen is making his way to your home. Open your door big big to welcome the Cai Sen.!!…..huat ar!!!!….

Door is always open but nothing seems to be coming in! Hopefully, one day soon, something worth the wait will drop by. 😉 Hehehehe….you know jolly well that when you come over here, it’s all about food…most of the time.

  4. I see some new dishes I have not eaten before – salted egg pork ribs and sea cucumber fried with egg. All your dish choices are so good. Hey, I did not know that the pussy willow can be planted here. I thought these plants only come from China.

I like restaurants like this one where the waitress can describe the dishes and make recommendations – many of the SYT’s (sweet young things) at the classier cafes are as dumb as they look. Ya…I guess those plants do come from China – quite surprised myself that they actually started growing from the seemingly-dried cuttings.

  5. wow wow wow so auspicious!! you have got mee sua for longevity as well as pomelo and mandarin oranges for prosperity!! cool~~ 🙂

Have to cover all grounds mah! Can’t take any chances… Hehehehehehe!!! 😀

  6. Every dishes of foods here looks so tempting…

Works out to SIN$30, inclusive of rice and drinks. Cheap or not? 😉

  7. Ivan is such a sweet boy, flying over just to extend his greetings. Sea cucumber is full of collagen no wonder you look much cuter now 😛 Dato Jimmy Choo said that is his secret to his youthful looks so yeah, sea cucumber for the win!

Oh??? Gee! Then I must stock up a lot and eat it everyday. You wouldn’t wanna hear how the men catch it in the sea, I’m sure, though… Hehehehehe!!!! 😀

  8. Aikksss….now you remind me of kampua for breakfast, midin for dinner =_=
Sea cucumber fried with egg is new to me too…I agreed that Foochow-style tofu soup tasted abit like shark fin soup. 😉

Missing Sarikei and all the nice Foochow-style food there? Remember, next time…stop by Sibu for a night or two and I can take you to enjoy these and more – I’m sure it’s nicer here.

  9. I find salted egg pork ribs and fried egg sea cucumber are two very special dishes that I haven’t tried before. Ivan is indeed a very good and thoughtful friend of you and your family.

Yes, and I am truly so very blessed with so many friends like him. 🙂

  10. Midin will run out of stock in CNY! If i’m going next round, i will plan carefully not to go during any holidays so that I won’t miss my favorite midin. The sea cucumber fried egg is pretty nice too. I’m glad they used tung hoon now. Shark fins will turn me away.

Yup! No sharks fins for me either. It’s tasteless…and very very expensive, a status symbol. They did not use tung hoon in this one though – sea cucumber and it tasted the same – they’re all tasteless anyway and would depend on the other ingredients in the dish for that.

  11. Mmmm all yummy food….midin…lol…sure claire will drool

Hey! thammelissa brought some back to Seremban – wrapped in newspapers – still ok, no problem. So when are you coming again to buy some home?

  12. back to all the glorious drooling at your delicious dishes!! so wanna go to Sibu right now!!! I definately want each of all those in this post…

p/s: I am very sure your windfall is coming very soon… go buy 4D, lottery… lol ! 😉

I am, I am…and when I strike, I’ll give you a big treat…when you come to Sibu. You can eat all you want! Hehehehehehe!!!!

  13. Your pomelo * wink wink * looks good 😉 Ahah! that bright coloured placemat underneath the fruit basket looks familiar 🙂 you’re not using the fruit bowl that Onn made for you?

It is somewhere in my display cabinet – sayang, must keep nice-nice…

    1. Woi, Yoong! You don’t harass Arthur la. He is a hoarder! Anything nice you bet your ass that he will keep and keep and keep one until he can pass on to his great- great- great grand children as an inheritance. If he use any of your stuff, it means not so nice and special… Hahahaha. ( There, Arthur.. say thank you to me for explaining how your brains and habits work! )

True! True! Look at all my kualis in my store – still go on using my old one, and other things as well. Old nyonya habits. My cousin sent me something to make coffee – I said I’m becoming like our late Ma-Ko/Ee, sayang…so will keep sparkling new…and she replied, “Don’t you dare!” LOL!!! Will blog about that soon.

      1. Little nyonya, be careful what you say….coz I may wish to know what Arthur’s habits are! wahahaaa! Eeeeeeeeeeee!!

Why would you want to know? One is – I go to sleep at 9 p.m. and wake up at 4 or 5.

      2. Ass as in arse ler! Somehow I don’t like the ‘arse’ spelling. Looks a bit crude and I very sopan one… Come, let us all laugh now.. Hahahaha!

        LOL!!! 😀

  14. Wah, the first 2 dishes I don’t want la. The rest, bring it on * lap air liur*

What? The kampua and the mee sua? Or the midin and the creamy prawns?

    1. Got midin, creamy prawns etc, eat the kampua and mee sua buat kotor kan perut only… Wakakakaka * tak sedar diri*

Kampua, mee sua also nice…you stay longer, can eat all and lots more!

      1. Shereen..you eat prawns meh, and these prawns tak ada shells lah for you to lick lick..heh heh!!

She jilat the gravy and let her hubby eat the prawn. Hehehehehehe!!!!

  15. Normally I don’t take sea cucumber but this fried version looks very interesting. Ming Mei Shi really serve good food ehh, if not you wouldn’t patronize them..LOL!

This handsome dude is really a nice guy. Ada potential become ur son in law?eheheh

We went there what? That night, after which we went karaoke, remember?

Hmmm…yesterday, Claire also hinted at the same thing…and earlier, Shereen said Huai Bin would make a good one. Sigh!!!! If tak ada jodoh, nothing can be done lah… Hehehehehe!!!! 😉

  16. I tell you STP, IF I really have the chance to visit Sibu, please bring me to go taste all this nice food ok? (I know you will :p)

Of course!!! That goes without saying…and I must say that I enjoy doing this very much…for anyone who cares to drop by!

  17. wah, i’ve never had sea cucumber fried with egg before. sounds like a tempting proposition! 😀

It is nice…with onions, shitake and whatever inside…and I think black vinegar is also used.

  18. all the food above looks lovely and yummy!!! My favourite will be that sea cucumber fried with egg..slurp slurp slurp!!

You brought a lot back to KL, right? Can try cooking your own. Hehehehehe!!!!

  19. you sure have a lot of variety
of noodles huh and they all look yummy to me

Indeed, they’re all good…but you need to know where to go! Some places can do it better than others.

  20. is that some sort of flower? it was kinda strange looking
never saw anything like that around here

Pussy willows? Chinese people will buy the stems with the buds – used to be white but lately, they also have red…and they will stick in a vase or something and display in the house for good luck during Chinese New Year or whatever… I’ve never seen the flower before either.

  21. The food looks lovely, still want to try the wild jungle fern. I love dark greens. 🙂 We have the pussy willows growing in Maryland. I’ve always been fond of cattails. We have a lot of those growing wild also, they seem to like marshy areas.

  22. Wow Arthur! The same comment: I wish I was Ivan! 😀 Lucky fella!

You can if you want to – just hop over to JB and catch the direct flight here… Coming anytime soon? You will not regret it, I tell you. It’s very different here but in a very nice and interesting way. For most people, this is the last place on earth they would want to vist as they think it is so boring here – well, as those who have been here, they will tell you otherwise.

  23. I love seeing the pussy willow bloom:D I am sure a windfall is coming your way soon! Keep us posted please 😀

No worries, will tell the whole world if suddenly, overnight, I become rich! 😉

  24. What a awesome meal. I love the Foochow mee sua, it look so tempting. The salted egg pork ribs look interesting, haven’t try this dish….. Creamy butter prawns look like to die for kind. 🙂

kaypohchi a bit… the gift from Ivan inclusive the angpow? Or the angpow wrapper just for deco only? LOL
Wish you good luck with many windfall in the snake year. I’d five small 4 ekor windfall during the CNY, good enough lah better than nothing. Enough to belanja you makan a scrumptious meal if you happen to be in JB. 🙂

No lah! He’s single…cannot give ang pao – still eligible to get one from me. Those empty ones purely for decoration only. Wahhhhhhh!!!! FIVE!!! Sooooo lucky! Wonder when my turn will be… 😦 The mee sua here not that great – some other places have nicer ones. The ribs and prawns were very very good…

    1. Seriously, you’re better than the last time. The pictures last time not as good as now. Now, I will be hungry every time I’m here.

Last time, camera phone…and then I had a better one…and the current Canon iXus is a bit better.
