Through the rain…

It was raining cats and dogs yesterday morning but I had told Melissa the day before that I would take her here…

Pelicana Chicken Sibu 1

…the next day for brunch so we just made our way to the place nonetheless.

Pelicana Chicken Sibu 2

This is the 1st-in-Malaysia Korean franchise and according to their Facebook page, it is a highly successful Korean traditional-style fried chicken franchise with more than 2,000 outlets in Korea and it has now made its way into Malaysia…right here in Sibu.

Pelicana Chicken Sibu 3

This is the counter on the ground floor and you can opt to eat there or go upstairs.

I would say that the staff members were pleasantly nice and efficient and we did not have any problem at all conveying to them what we wanted.

We ordered the Chinese New Year crazy deal (RM18.80)…

– the one on the screen to the left and added RM1.00 more for two cups of iced lemon tea…

PCS tea & stuff

We found the drink nicer than those at those other franchise places where most of the time, they would just serve you one of the local brands that we can easily get in the supermarkets and shops in cans or tetra packs.

For the set, we got two pieces of their Peli Crunchy Original…

Peli Crunchy Original

…which Melissa said was nicer than the ones at that other chicken franchise place…and she loved the accompanying yellow sauce to go with it…

Yellow sauce

She said that it tasted like the honey mustard salad dressing that she used to buy in Wellington.

Other than that, there were also five pieces of the spicy Yangnyeom Original…

Yangnyeom

…and these were really very very nice. We had something very spicy when we had our Korean dinner in Auckland, New Zealand but this was not spicy at all. I think the next time we drop by, I would definitely order the Hot Hot!

For one thing, we ordered everything in their takeaway boxes as we thought there was such a lot in the set and we probably would not be able to finish and were planning to take whatever that was left home. As a result, I do feel that my photos do not really do justice to what we had – you can click the link –> here to go to their Facebook album to look at their much nicer photographs there.

We were given this complimentary treat to try – the fragrant Korean rice…

Korean rice

It was nice with toasted sesame seeds and seaweed in it…but I’m no fan of sesame oil so I can’t say that I would want that again.

Somebody had this seaweed side dish and I managed to snap a photograph of it…

Side dish

I guess it must be one of the side dishes but I did not get to try that so I cannot comment on it.

They also gave us these Korean canned drinks…

Korean soda

…on the house and I quite liked the melon one that I had.

Both Melissa and I enjoyed ourselves and one thing’s for sure, we certainly wouldn’t mind going back there again sometime. Anybody interested in tagging along?

P.S.:
For the uninitiated, this place is located at No. 2, Lorong Wong King Huo 3A, to the left of Medan Mall, directly opposite the very popular Hong Fu Restaurant.

  1. ooo, interesting preparations for fried chicken! am crossing my fingers, toes and various unmentionables that chicken pelicana comes to KL sometime this year! (maybe you can hint to the manager here next time, heh) 😀

The owners – a brother & sister are NZ PR’s but they decided to come back and try their hand at this business venture. Actually they were contemplating on either KL or Kuching…but in the end, they decided to give Sibu a try – since they’re originally from here. Who knows, if they do well, they may spread their wings to Kuching or even KL?

  2. Very interesting! 🙂

I’ve never seen this place before in my life!

I’ve eaten at a Korean fried chicken franchise in KL though – says it was the first too, although the first or the first to use extra virgin olive oil to fry their chicken is ambiguous in their copy.

    This looks *much* better! 😀

P/S – Come visit during CNY!

I think I’ve read about this fry-in-olive oil chicken somewhere, can’t remember now. Nothing has been heard sine – wonder how it’s doing. We can drop by this one sometime and you can give it a try and make comparisons. Don’t just take my word for it.

P.S. You’ll have to come over sometime…to collect your ang pao! LOL!!! 😀

  3. I like the look of the fried chicken, very crispy indeed. Had tried a few times in Malaysia these Korean fried chicken but I wasn’t too taken in by it as they were very oily and the artificial flavoring was too strong. I think yours look much better.

Both tasted great and no oil in the takeaway box – try doing that at that fried chicken chain – check the piece of waxed paper lining. I love the spicy one, very nice.

  4. Am not really into Korean food though but the fried chicken really tempts me. Very nicely done, looks cripsy. Really want to give it a bite. Yummy!!….

I enjoyed the Korean barbecue dinner in NZ very much – loved everything except the kimchi. Hehehehehe!!!! But their spicy beef or chicken was very very spicy – this one isn’t really. Didn’t feel a thing. Will have to request for extra spicy the next time around.

  5. Not a fastfood fan due to the calories… but at times I do not mind indulging in a piece of crispy fried chicken!

Luckily, we still do not have this chain in SIngapore yet… 😀

LOL!!! Watching your figure, eh? The spicy one is worth the calories. 😉 Not something that would get me jumping up and down with delight and lining up, craving for more, but I thought both were good and I would not mind going back there again.

  6. That chicken would cease my heart!

From pleasure or pressure? Just a piece will be fine – everything in moderation…which makes me wonder about the crowds at those popular fast food joints.

  7. oh, interesting!! korean franchise opening it’s first Malaysian branch in Sibu??!! hmmmm, they must have heard about the Food Mayor of Sibu so they decided to open it in Sibu first.. when are they coming to KL?? the chicken looks good~~

Search me. If they do well here, they may want to branch out…or if they don’t, they may get out of Sibu and try KL instead… Keep your fingers crossed.

  8. The chicken looks better than XXX chicken…

Happy Lunar New Year to you and your family….

It definitely does and tastes a whole lot nicer too. Wishing the same to you and your family… My CNY posts start tomorrow… 😉

  9. At first glance I thought it is some sort of Western fast food chain, hehe..

I don’t really like Korean food though :p

I just had it once, the authentic stuff…in NZ and I really enjoyed it except for the kimchi. This isn’t too bad – anytime better than that chicken chain that I don’t bother going to.

  10. I love Korean fried chicken, ate it when I visited Seoul last year and am still craving for it !! Hope they open an outlet in Kuching soon.
Happy New Year to you and your family. May the year of the snake bring you even more adventures in the search for good food 🙂

Ahhhhh!!!! So they DO have it in Seoul. Somebody’s commenting on Facebook that she went to Seoul and she did not see it there. I guess Seoul isn’t a small place like Sibu – can’t possibly see it all in one short trip. Wishing the same to you and your family! Lots of joy, good health and wealth in the year ahead.

  11. they serve honey mustard sauce??? I m sold… love that sauce! I also like Milkis… strange I havent seen this in KL yet. Praying for it to come… would love to try this for sure.

Gong Xi Fa Cai to You & yr Family!! May you Huat in many ways…:D

You like? My daughter too!!! She said she always bought to eat when she was in Wellington. That’s why she enjoyed the yellow sauce here a lot – said it was something like that. Hmmm…I wonder if it will ever get to KL…

  12. I have not been going to KFC for quite some time. I wish I can have some good Fried Chicken like this too. I actually prefer fried chicken than burger and pizza.

You do? I thought you would avoid such not-so-healthy stuff? The one here isn’t oily…or as oily, so that’s one plus point in its favour.

  13. Wahhh..hoping they will come to KL soon. Dowan KFC edy…now the second option is Popeye Chicken.eheheheh

Last day to comment at your blog. Will be back after the CNY holidays.

Happy Chinese New Year to you and family.

Same to you and yours. What? So soon? No internet connection at home? Never heard of Popeye Chicken – I thought he only eats spinach… Hehehehehehe!!!!!

  14. Looks good! Can compete with the US franchise outlets! But now I look at fried stuff, I scared liow… waiting to get my appetite back to normal.. my taste buds are still MIA .. sigh..

Oh dear! And two days to the New Year… Hope it’s not going to spoil the joy and the fun.

  15. Pelicana! They have been around in korea for a few years. I hope ppl appreciates them and hopefully it would expand and grow bigger.

They have, eh? Ya, hope it does well here… Sure can do with more places like this other than the same old stuff all the time.

  16. Yum! Yum! I love fried chicken! From the photo it looks like the chicken pieces are crunchy on the outside. Hmmm…how come there isn’t a Pelicana in KL or PJ?

They decided to open up shop right here in Sibu. If it does well, maybe someone will start there?

  17. The chicken looks really crispy from the photos! I just want to sink my teeth into them! And to think that it’s Korean spicy flavour… I LOVE spicy food! Hopefully a branch in Sydney maybe? Hehehe

I think there is, somewhere in NSW. Try googling….

  18. Oh, the fried chicken looks so much nicer than the Kung Fu Chicken here. But I’m not a fan of fried chicken, prefer burger 🙂

Not me. I think I’d rather have fried chicken but not from that chicken place! Any others will do, roadside Malay makan stalls also nicer…

  19. Wow! Looking good!! Ok, i am leaving to Korea tomorrow night, will check this out in Korea this time. I know korean fried chicken is very nice and very addictive. Last week, someone showed me some korean fried chicken she got it from Sri Hartamas, forgot the name, she said it is very nice, but i do agree the smell is superb!!!

Let me try the original one in Korea, then i go back to Sibu next month and try the Sibu one.

In case tomorrow i got no time to online, here wish you, Melissa and Lucy a very happy chinese new year and gong xi fa cai!! Have a fun great chinese new year! Huat ar!

Wahhhhhh!!!! Korea again! Every year, you go there for Chinese New Year – so nice. Lucky you – now can go for the real thing! No wonder don’t want to come back to Sibu. 😦 Qong Xi Fa Cai, Sing Nien Khuai Ler to you, Cougar, the boys and all in the family!

  20. The chicken looks good! Hopefully someone will serve something similar here in KL. There was one fried chicken franchise that was Korean based but was too short lived.

I hope this will will be around for a while – not many places to go to here…so it’s a welcome change.

  21. food looks good but a bit pricey for Sibu

These franchise places…not that cheap really but the set was ok, not too expensive.
