Special gift…

Another year has passed and it’s my birthday again – my big SIX-O…today!!!

So how do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets…in midnights, in cups of coffee?
In inches, in miles…in laughter, in strife?
In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes?
How do you measure a year in the life?

Let’s celebrate…
Remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love
Measure in love
Measure your life in love

…and I must say that if I were to measure the year gone past in love, there can be no denying that I have indeed been abundantly blessed with lots and lots of it from family and friends alike…and I really have to thank each and everyone of you for the love, the joy and all the precious memories to treasure and to cherish. To whom it may concern, thank you all!

Well, sixty years is indeed a very long time but it feels like only yesterday when I was growing up, going to school and eventually working, trying to make a life for myself and bringing up a family. I do not know if this song is all that relevant or not – it is sung by the daughter of the late Lydia Sum and the veteran singer-composer Liu Chia Chang but my limited language of the language tells me that it is something along these lines – something about standing behind someone or by his or her side, supporting and encouraging him or her to be brave in  “crossing the seas and climbing over mountains”. You can click the link here to watch the video clip and listen to the song:

On my part, I certainly would like to believe that I have done just that – supporting my daughter through school, college and university, always there by her side through thick and thin, always there…for her

Little graduate

…and now that she has completed her B.Ed (TESOL) degree and would be going for her convocation very very soon, it, of course, makes me feel so very proud and immensely happy that I have done my part as a father, a mentor and a friend.

This, I would say, is the best birthday present, the most special gift that a father can ever wish for…

  24. Dearest Arthur,
Because today, your 60th, is so special
    It really wouldn’t do,
To send one simple birthday wish
To last the whole year through
    So this wishes happy moments,
A day when dreams come true,
And a year that’s filled with all the things
That mean the most to you.

True Friends are the bacon bits
In the salad bowl of life. How true
I read that and straight away,
    My thoughts turned to you
And especially today on your 60th
    These special wishes I send
    Have a really wonderful birthday
    My special “bacon flavored” friend.

With lots of love from all of us!!!!!

Ooooo…I love bacon, don’t we all? Slurpssss!!!!!! Thank you so very much for your lovely poem. Gosh!!! Took you the whole day to write? I was waiting and waiting for your comment and it sure is worth the wait. Thanks again. Love to you all too! 🙂

  25. It so nice to be surrounded by those you love, and you have plenty of family/friends that love you. That is a blessing. I hope you have a wonderful birthday, and I hope you have plenty more filled with good health and happiness.

No doubt about that – I know I am truly blessed. Thanks for your greeting and good wishes too, Opal. So glad you’re my friend too…all the way from the US of A. You’ll stick around, won’t you? 🙂

  26. Happy Birthday! Wow… You’re at 60. And still very young at heart! =)
