…at this place, the favourite of many, for lunch that day when my friends, Simon and Helen, from Kuching were in town.
For reasons known only to them, they were having a special offer on their lime juice…
– just 80 sen a glass.
We had the butter scotch pork that day…
Normally, we would have prawns but the lady boss said that they did not have any pek hay (white prawns), the relatively cheaper seawater variety and she did not encourage us to order the freshwater udang galah either as they are presently pretty expensive. I bought some several weeks ago at RM50 a kilo and I can imagine what the price is like now with the horrible stormy and wet weather that we’ve been experiencing lately.
For this same reason, we had their cereal fish fillet…
– I would usually order prawns done this way as well.Β Fortunately, both dishes turned out to be nice and were enjoyed by all and sundry.
The own-made tofu was good – very fine and smooth…
…and I thought the smell of the salted fish in the midst of the minced meat was very nice. However, I did not really enjoy the taste – it probably would be much nicer with just minced meat and dried chilies.
Other than these three, I also ordered the usual favourites – the cangkuk manis fried with egg, the sea cucumber soup and the midin (wild fern) fried with belacan (dried fermented prawn paste)…
I certainly hope everybody enjoyed the food…
*Simon & Helen’s photo on Facebook*
Well, we did manage to finish most of everything so I guess it wasn’t too bad.
The bill came up to RM80 for 6 dishes for 7 persons altogether and I must say that the servings were rather generous that day. All in all, I would consider that as being pretty reasonable, not too expensive. What do you all think?
Are seriously serious?… All that for 80 bucks? Gosh! I would be extremely rich within a year if I live in Sibu!!!No wonder mansions and palaces everywhere there π
No prawns, no expensive fish…that’s why quite cheap…even though pork has gone up in price lately. π¦ With simple prudent living (in this place where people always say – got money, nowhere to spend), one should be able to save quite a bit actually…
Opps… Are you seriously serious?… lupa to type the word ‘you’… Too excited punya pasal.. hehehehe. Good morning!!!
Good morning. Calm down, calm down! LOL!!!! Over there, people earn big bucks, of course things more expensive…and people spend, spend, spend…too much money chasing too few goods – prices increase. I studied this in Economics. Hehehehehe!!!! π
Very cheap… 80rm is very reasonable..but perhaps with the prawns, it will be slightly more.. but then never mind about the price.. the yummylicious food is all that counts! Ruby, right? (I didn’t click back to check) π
Yup, same old Ruby… including rice and drinks, around RM93 plus and the nice boss just rounded it up to RM90. Lots of rain, stormy weather…not a good time to have prawns – expensive even if buying own at the market…IF available. π¦
Yes, eat prawns when the price is reasonable.. they are always around.. hahaha…
Somebody just told me this morning of a place where I can get udang galah (freshwater big head prawns) cheap…less than RM30 a kg, fairly big ones – like the ones you had when you came to my house for dinner…and also the sea water prawns or what we call “pek hay” (soft shell, not the tiger prawns). Will go and check out those places soonest.
WHAT?! RM80 for 6 dishes?! that’s so cheap! =DDD
stormy and wet weather over there too? take good care of yourself ya! π
Ya, not in Penang? I hear weather’s very bad in KL. My friend in Dengkil called me 5 something in the morning, Sunday, said the whole place flooded and even in his condo compound – car in water, could not go to work, had to take emergency leave… Some places here also flooded but thankfully, my area is all right. Pray to God for His mercy and better weather – I think we have had enough rain already….
Only RM80??? Wow, that is really inexpensive! If I lived in Sibu, I’ll be able to eat out more often π And all the food looked really good. The lime juice looks so refreshing, my throat is kind of twitching right now π Am curious about the butterscotch pork. Sure sounds yummy to me π
Secret recipe… You will have to come to Sibu and try that and then maybe you can figure out what they have in it. Absolutely delicious!!!! π
Reasonable price…
Yes, and tasted good too.
Do they call it cereal fish fillet because that’s what the batter is made with? The butterscotch pork is an interesting name. I’ve never heard of it… but I’ll do some hunting for recipes and make some for my daughter– and if she likes it, I’ll give some to my father when my mom is out of town visiting my brother and his family.
They would not reveal their secret recipe – it’s a bit sweet plus a little hint of a salty taste, feels like they have condensed milk and butter in it…with garlic, not too sure. Yup…they use oats, I think, for the cereal dish. I prefer Nestum though…
I found one that uses corn syrup and whipping cream. I was slightly surprised that they didn’t use condensed milk. Interestingly, my initial reaction was oh they must use condensed milk! I guess I’m basing that on what I’ve used to make homemade butterscotch.
I think I’ll try a version with condensed milk and the rest of the recipe I stumbled upon during my Google search. Although it won’t be the same recipe, judging by the comments, it seems to be good. We’ll see…
I don’t think they have those ingredients – we can get them here but they do not come cheap. I think they must have resorted to some cheaper substitutes instead and I am pretty sure there is condensed milk… π
The butterscotch pork looks great, not that the others don’t and that’s a great price.
My first time tasting fiddleheads (wild ferns) was at a dinner in Kinabatangan. Was really surprised it tasted so good. Good morning!
You will have to come over here if you want to eat those again. Not that cheap anymore, I’m afraid. Demand keeps increasing…and they grow wild – not able to keep up with it, it seems. Last time, we could buy anytime at the market, RM2 one huge bundle – these days, no guarantee…and at times, a bit too pricey… The other day, I saw RM12 a kilo…but half a kg is a lot already – they’re very light.
wah I love the butter scotch pork.. looks yummy and delicious..
the cereal fish? hmm got fishy smell or not?
Come and try… If there’s fishy smell, you think I would want to order to treat my friends? Tsk! Tsk! π¦
Where’s the pek hay gone?
Where’s the chicken gone?
RM80 its Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheap, Cheap
Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheap, Cheap, Chirp
Ya, we did not order any chicken dish… Not too sure what is nice there as far as chicken goes. Maybe I should try sometime…
Nice! It’s good to see Ruby Restaurant again!
Butterscotch pork eh? That sounds quite promising if the regular prawns they serve are not available.
RM 50/kg on the market would translate to quite a steep increase in restaurant prices.
Everything still looks tasty though. Heh. Especially the butterscotch pork! π
We’ve been there a few times, haven’t we? Food is just as nice as ever…and it’s nice with pork too but of course, it’s best with prawns. π Hope they will have those when you come home…
Yeah, I still remember the coffee style that’s named after you. Heh.
That would be awesome! I have missed their butterscotch prawns a lot! π
Yes, I haven’t had that for a while now. Wouldn’t want to drink it for dinner for fear that I would not be able to sleep. I would have ordered it that day – show my Kuching friends…but the lime juice on offer was simply too cheap to resist. LOL!!! π
lime juice seem pretty tasty and refreshing
i dont like tofu but that one seems scrumptious
Oh? Tofu is considered healthy…high class protein, anytime better than meat!
RM80 for those 6 yummy dishes, that is pretty pretty cheap…and the best part is generous serving to cater for 7 persons. Tummy full and happy faces. Is this their normal price or knowing you well, they give you discount.
I reckon that’s the usual. Actually I ordered servings for 4 only…but every plate came out so huge, so stunned!!!! Luckily, the bill’s reasonable…
RM80 is reasonable for all these 6 dishes. I could see many of you taking lime juice and canned drinks. I didn’t know how many plates of white rice that you ordered. So all in all, the price considered reasonable.
7 bowls of rice plus 7 glasses of lime juice and 1 can of CocaCola = the extra RM10.00 in the bill, not including the RM80 for the dishes of food. Definitely reasonable.
Reasonable price with so many dishes!
I want sea cucumber soup & midin! Yay… ;-D
Going to visit your in-laws soon? You can have those and lots more… Yum! Yum! π
gorgeous meal.. I would order all the same dishes above…. I like midin a lot… whether sambal or served cold… its really crunchy and yummy…
80 cents for lime juice? it must be in season… π
They have – the cold midin. Thai-style midin, they call it. Very nice…but I don’t like the strips of ginger in it. Hard time, getting rid of those before eating. I don’t mind ginger as an ingredient in a dish but I hate biting into it and eating it. Dunno why the lime juice was so cheap – the lady boss said holiday’s coming so they are giving special offer to celebrate. Humph!!! As if anyone would believe that! LOL!!! π
With pork and fish and the rest for 7 persons, RM80 is dirt cheap!
I’m always proud to “advertise” that Taiping food is cheap, but not anymore after seeing yours!
Oh? Cheaper here eh? Bet it is nicer here too… Hehehehehehe!!!! π
Butter scotch pork? I wonder is this a new dish or nobody is serving this to me here, hmpf!
Can’t get it over there – original secret recipe. I took my friends working/staying in the peninsula to eat and when they went back, they went round looking for it there but of course, they could not find it anywhere there. Only in Sibu…and only at Ruby, nowhere else.
oh yeah, that lime juice looks good and only charged at 80sen?? that’s really a steal, furthermore look at the greenish color, it shows how much lime they have used.. over here, i guess at least RM1.60 in coffee shop, and perhaps RM7.90 in cafes…
I think I heard something about them blending the skin as well, that’s why greenish in colour – nicer that way…and usually there would be one or two asamboi inside. Maybe since it was on offer, they saved up the sour plums…for other days. LOL!!!
the butter scotch pork looks good!! yummy yummy…
VERY!!! A must-order at this place. Everyone who tried fell in love with it instantly!
80 cent for that lime juice is pretty cheap. Can’t even get this in Ipoh. RM80 for such a good and hearty meal is certainly reasonable. Of all the dishes, I love the butter scotch pork and midin. I only tried butter scotch prawn before, wondering how good the pork version will be.
You tried the prawns? Where? Not the same as butter prawns wor – butter prawns, dry or creamy…you can get everywhere! Hmmm…Ipoh, city also mah! Like KL and Penang – people all very rich, of course the things have to be more expensive lor. Hehehehehe!!!!
Oh…I think mine are butter prawns – love the dry version. Not sure about butter scotch prawn now.
Nope, you can’t get this over there. Have to come here to eat… Hehehehehe!!! π
That’s so much cheaper than KL. I prefer it though when they put sugar on the side instead of making the drink overly sweet.
This WAS sour…or at least to the likes of me. Fat people don’t usually like sour stuff. Normally I would just have iced water but since they were having an offer and I was fighting an attack of flu that day, I thought I could do with the little bit of Vitamin C. π
Is the butterscotch pork a bit sweet in flavour?
Yup…that’s why I have this feeling that it is butter with condensed milk…and garlic & Bombay onions & leek. Never bothered to try it myself though….
it’s stormy and wet weather over there too? that’s EXACTLY the weather we’re currently having here in kl π
Not too bad here – Sunday morning terrible storm, eased by afternoon and the sun came out, yesterday all day good weather…a bit of drizzle around 1 but it was a false alarm. Disappeared as quickly as it came. Light rain this morning but by lunch time…all clear. Right now, sunny!!! So on the whole, I would say it is not as bad here – just pray it will stay this way…
Looks yummy…am drooling now. Wish I could whip this up from home :p
Come, come! I’m sure you can. Just give it a try… π
80 cents for the lime juice? WOW!! Cheap!! And RM80 for the dinner, cheap cheap too!! As usuall ..all my favourite dish..slurp slurp.
School holidays already! No plans to come home? π
I am really curious on the butter scotch pork / prawns …..never had this dish over here. Never heard before. Sweet ? Buttery ?
RM80 is very cheap………
Yes, a bit sweet with a bit of buttery fragrance plus the leek, onions and all. Very nice!
Good grief. Makes me so annoyed at the prawns we had in Penang … udang galah, 1.5kg cooked in a curry (what a waste but that was the only dish they serve, weird) for RM 146. Gah! Rm80 for all this food?! I’m moving …
Good grief! At least they can cook asam prawans… Curry would drown out the taste completely and that’s almost RM100 a kg!!! Wow!!! You people so rich, willing to fork out the money toe at that. Hmmmmm…forget Penang! Next time, come to Sibu.
I want to eat that tofu!!!! Yummy!
Sorry, you can’t! And this is one place that will not be in the itinerary should you hop over to Sibu. No worries! Lots of other places to take you…all very nice food and there are places where you can even taste our local kampua and kompia – very nice too! π
Wow…can’t believe when you told me the total is only RM80. Still much more cheaper than Claire’s food in Ipoh on her Yam Yam Restaurant blog post. π
Ps. I’m moving to Sibu soon.
Welcome, welcome… Oh? I thought hers is pretty cheap, got lala…but of course we had sea cucumber. Hehehehehe!!!! π
Yeah this stormy weather is driving me crazy! I’ve missed playground like more than 2 weeks dy. Seafood will have to put on hold.. π₯ It’s so boring being cooped in the house every evening!!
Well, you need to occupy yourself with some home entertainment lor… Hehehehehehe!!!! Or get some people to sleepover…party away, have a blast!
the prawns and the lime juice! !!! they looks good and impressive!
Come on over! JB-Sibu direct…so very near! Grab a cheap fare offer…
Hi, cheap and good. The food look extremely delicious. The lime juice so refreshing. slurrpppp
Have a nice week ahead.
Yup, definitely value for money…
wah lime juice at 80 sen a glass?!! that’s cheap. here even the barli costs RM1.50
That was why we were so surprised. Unbelievable.
what reasonable? it’s cheap la. RM80 for so many dishes and sedap some more leh
Cheap eh? Come…come… Ruby is waiting… π
yummy yummy! cant wait to go sibu, everything so cheap π the midin looks so much like paku fern here, but i was told it’s different. i love paku fern
Come! Come! Book your ticket, quick…and let me know your date and time of arrival… I will take it from here, no worries!
