Grenade…

I don’t know why but my friend, Clare, calls these grenades…

Grenades

…and the other weekend, when she was back in town, she brought me some all the way from Kuching.

They were something like those yolk puffs that I bought here during the Mooncake Festival not too long ago…

…except that they had pandan paste instead of lotus paste and instead of the salted egg yolk, they had meat floss inside…

Grenade - inside

Actually I did go back to the bakery just the other day to see whether they still had those puffs for sale but I only saw two not-very-nice-looking packets, probably leftovers from the festival so I did not buy any in the end. I guess they do not usually make those so I reckon we would have to wait till next year when the festival comes around again.

If I compare the two, I would very much prefer salted egg to meat floss though the latter is very nice as well. The paste is a bit harder and dry compared to the Sibu-made lotus paste but the skin/pastry is a whole lot nicer…

When I heated them up in the oven, those thin layers of puff pastry became very crispy/brittle and exitra-fragrant. I really loved it that way! Yummmmm!!!!

It seemed that her friend, Alvin, bought them…or rather his father, from some place in Jalan Ang Cheng Ho in Kuching and Clare brought some over to Sibu for me. It was certainly so sweet of them…like those so-called grenades, to remember me – thanks so very much indeed…
