Won’t go home without you…

My friend from KL and his missus were here for two nights only so I just had to bring them here for dinner so that they would not go home without eating some of the delightful dishes that so many others who came before had enjoyed tremendously. This night view of Sibu was taken from the entrance to the restaurant so most of you would be able to guess where we went even without clicking the link…

Sibu by night

Needless to say, we had the usual favourites – the midin (wild jungle fern) with belacan (dried prawn paste), the fried cangkuk manis with egg, the sea cucumber soup and for the butter scotch prawns…

Butterscotch prawns

I requested for the udang galah – our local freshwater prawns, considering that they loved it so much when we went for the prawn noodles earlier and it is very expensive and not very affordable in the peninsula.

I also ordered the specialty of the house – the pandan chicken…

Pandan chicken

…which was certainly very well-liked and the venison fried with a generous amount of ginger…

Ginger venison

…plus the fried mee sua

Fried mee sua

Six dishes for four persons plus two bowls of rice only and drinks, and the total came up to RM89.80 but the nice boss of the restaurant rounded it up to RM85.00. I guess that is not really cheap but I reckon it would cost a lot less without those prawns and I think venison is quite expensive as well.

Well, at least, they loved and enjoyed everything and that was all that mattered and hopefully, they would go home and tell everybody how nice Sibu is and what good food they had during their brief stay in this little town…

  1. What you paid for is considered cheap by KL standards. Could easily cost us above RM150.00 here what with venison and the udang galah. All the food you ordered are really good stuff.

Ya, and sea cucumber isn’t cheap either. These would be what we would usually order around here…but we would opt for the ordinary sea water prawns – those would be much cheaper…maybe around RM50-60 altogether for all the dishes for 3 or 4 persons then.

  2. what a scrumptious meal!! udang galah again, guess your friends are really hooked onto it after that noodles in that “burnt-down” coffee shop.. and hey, i like that pandan chicken and venison too, they look good!!!

Of course they’re good! Sibu food, simply the best. Come, come…you can enjoy all these and more, lots more! Yum! Yum! Yum!

  3. The pandan chicken is good. Cant go wrong with a bowl of white rice.

You went without me…I wonder what you had. You did not go, your 2nd trip to Sibu, right? Hmmmmm….have to come again then. Still lots more to try. 😉

  4. Yes, i like the boss of this restaurant very much. The other time we went without you he also gave us discount.

    yummy food too.

Yes, he’s a very nice guy…and handsome too eh? I like the fact that he can speak Hokkien, English and many dialects and languages. No need to struggle with my half-past-six Mandarin when dining at this restaurant.

  5. yum.. I wonder when only can get a chance to fly over, with the kid coming and all..

Nahhhhh!!!! Once the baby arrives, you will have to wait for at least over 1 year or two before you can start thinking of doing any travelling! And don’t ever think of dumping the kid some place and going off on your own. Not good like that though I know many people do that! A family is a family, must stay together.

  6. Looking at those dishes, RM85 wasn’t pricy at all. I specially like the venison and fried mee sua.

No, eh? With the prawns, venison and sea cucumber… Not really pricey, I would say.

  7. If I got a chance to go there, I won’t go home without the pandan chicken, midin and udang galah 🙂

Come on over! Your boy is big enough to travel. I’m sure he would love flying in a plane…and going on a holiday.

  8. The fried meesuah looks good…

It is. This place is one of my two favourites in town for fried mee sua. You’ve been there before?

  9. The pandan chicken looks so cute rolled up like that. Udang galah fuh!

I purposely took the photo like that to see who will comment on it first and how come I’m not surprised it is you? Muahahahahahaha!!!! 😀

    1. Ya…not cheap. Esp these big freshwater prawns!

That is why it is also not as cheap as before anymore here – people will export them over to the peninsula. Bigger market, better money over there. So we are the victims lah… Have to pay more than before and not so easy to get. 😦

  10. I m certainly not complaining on that price… but then again I dont live in Sibu… 🙂

Besides the price, all the dishes looked really gorgeous… I so wanna go to this place!! In fact, I am going to order the exact same thing… hahaha…

So when are you coming? Come, come…be my guest! Most welcome…and you will get to eat these and more, lots more! 😉

  11. Out of curiosity how much is the udang galah compared to those at ‘burnt down’ coffee shop? Those udang galah at the ‘burnt down’ (according to SK) coffee shop looked more nicer, think the better looking restaurant may kalah in taste. Right bro?

Different recipe, different taste – both very nice. These were probably not as big…and should be cheaper. However, this butter scotch gravy is the favourite of all who have tried…and to date, there is nowhere else anywhere where you can get prawns cooked this style – secret recipe, only the lady boss knows and she would never tell! Not too sure of the price of the dish, just that the whole meal came up to RM85.

    1. Okies got your message different kettle of prawns so cannot compare and just cant ‘judge’ them from the pixz need to taste. For RM85 its PLC – pang lang cheang. *Canto*.

Yalor…char kway teow and kway teow th’ng – both nice and both not the same, cannot compare and say which one is nicer. If same thing, two places…then can compare lah!

  12. Hey can u bring me around to makan makan in Sibu if I come? Hehehe I wanna eat all the authentic food!

Of course! It will be my pleasure. That was what my friend kept asking for. “Is this local? Is this Foochow? Is this local native?” I guess that’s the way it should be – going to a place to eat what they have…and not stuff that one can get back home. Can’t understand why people go on holiday overseas and then eat nasi lemak or curry mee…

  13. All six dishes looks very ‘deelishciouus’…certainly a wonderful feast for your friends to remember for always 🙂

Yes, and hopefully they will tell their friends and encourage them to drop by on a visit to this nice, little town…

  14. Wow! All that for only RM85?.. Are u serious? My mulut still terasa-rasa the pandan chicken, one of the best that I’ve had and I’m not easily impressed. The rest tu, no need to say lar.. darn shiok 🙂

Coming this way soon? Made some of the budu’ aur for my mum this morning – hope nobody will start blaming me if she starts to itch or her bp shoots up… 😦

  15. Ruby!!! Nice, all the food i like! RM89 for 6 dishes, consider cheap, don’t forget you got udang galah and sea cucumber soup, slurp slurp, my favourite soup! Maybe should ask my mum bring some sea cucumber for me in Nov and cook for me.

Hope I strike TOTO, then I go over and I’ll bring for you…but cook, cannot lah! That’s out of the question…but you can use this: https://suituapui.wordpress.com/2012/08/03/gotcha/ – throw in the sea cucumber, add black vinegar…will be more or less the same liao! 😉

  16. Me and Peter Sia had problems with our Mandarin when we first arrived When me and Peter Sia first came here..all spoke hakka. Went to tapau fried mee in the hawker. We asked for 4 ringgit in mandarin and wasn’t sure if he understood as 4 or 10.When we saw the amount of mee he fried we knew we had pronounced wrong,,,,, to be save we gave 50 note and sure enough the change was 40. That was alot of mee for 2…still cannot pronounce 4 and 10 correctly….

sir/ is 4 and sir\ is 10 but watch out! You may get a snake or end up being cursed when you ask someone to die – sir\…and they say English is confusing!

    1. Sir,

Actually one doesn’t have to be a non Mandarin speaker to get confuse with the language.

For the pronunciation of 4 and 10 there are 2 components. One is the tone (there are 4 tones) which…. rather difficult to describe with words, in English, that is. Another component… I would like to give it à try. Hope i don’t point anyone to Timbuktu if i fail to shed some light. 🙂

4 is with the sound similar to “s”-ound or “s”-tory.

10 is with the sound similar to “sh”-ut.

      Ermmmm…. Make sense kah? 🙂

Ah!!! That certainly helps, thanks. 🙂

  17. The prawn dish looks amazing! 😀 Your friends are so lucky to have a host like you who knows where to hunt good local food.

All who care to come here will be accorded the same warm hospitality – just ask those who have been here. Come, come…and I’ll give you that same VIP welcome and privileged treatment.

    1. Well next time I come to Sibu I’ll sure look you up. Quite a few of my relatives still live there… we used to visit often when I was still residing in Bintulu.

Oh? You’re from Sibu? Now,let me see how many Siew’s I know…. LOL!!!

      1. Some of my paternal side relatives are there but I was born in Bintulu, not Sibu.

Ok, good reason to come by and visit all of them…and stay in touch. 😉

  18. i miss the fried mee sua. That chicken pandan certainly looks savoury. all these food go well with an iced lemon tea 🙂

I would say the food here is all good, definitely among my favourite eating places in town.

  19. I LOVE THE CATCHY TITLE!! hehehe.. Have you heard of that song before? ‘Wont Go Home Without you- Maroon 5” .. ;P

Back to the food, not bad I would say (judge by appearance), but rm85 is indeed costly for me….;P

Of course! I have the karaoke vcd – tried but I can’t do it well…so it looks like it wouldn’t be in my repertoire anywhere anytime. 😦

For the giant prawns, sea cucumber and venison? You’re in KL, right? How much would you have to pay for a meal like what you had – http://www.greentearedbean.com/2012/09/restaurant-keng-ping-bandar-puteri.html over there, minus all those aforementioned? Or do you mean you can’t afford a meal that costs RM85? No worries! Bet there are many dashing young guys lining up to pick up the tab… Wink! Wink!

  20. Gosh… looking at the food makes me swallow my saliva… it is breakfast time and all I have is toast bread and peanut butter…guess it is a good substitute for now… :p

East, west…home is best! There’s no place like home sweet home – I’m sure you would agree with me on this…now and there’s no place like Sibu too, eh? 😉

  21. That prawn, venison, pandan chicken and all looks so scrumptious. Feel like making a trip to your home town and try all those delicious food. You are the first I must meet yeah….*muka tebal*

Of course!!! Just let me know when you are coming…and I’ll take over from here. You’ll be in good hands – all those who were here before will surely tell you that. 😉

  22. The Min Kong treatment! 🙂

Yeah, I do like their noodles, overpriced as it may be. They have good fish noodles too, used to be RM 20 too (it was RM 25 at one point).

They have fish at Min Kong? I wonder what fish they use – tapah…or patin. Probably the former…at that price. Parking can be a pain in that area but anyway, see how it goes when you come back next time. We can KIV this place as one of our pit-stops eh? 😉

    1. Oops! Sorry, wrong post!

I love Ruby too, haven’t been there in a while and those butterscotch prawns are starting to look mighty tempting!

I’ll love to have the Arthur coffee too! 😉

Ya, I know you do. We can drop by when you’re back in Sibu…no problem at all. 😉

  23. Love the looks of the fried mee suah. Yet to find good ones in KL.

Don’t think you can find that anywhere else. I hear it is easier to fry mee sua made in West Malaysia as it is not as soft (and sticky) as the Sibu Foochow ones.

  24. RM85 for all those delicious dishes, pretty cheap considered you had the udang galah which itself would cost a bomb. Guess all are enjoying the food.

Yalor…and somebody said it’s expensive or in her won words, “…rm85 is indeed costly for me.” Tsk! Tsk!

  25. All the dishes look mouth watering and delicious especially the udang galah. yum yum
One day must go over to Sibu for hoilday…. 🙂

Yes, it’s a definite MUST! Would be much better than elsewhere…unless you’re into those massaging and partying stuff. Foodwise, we have a lot to offer and can be better than a lot elsewhere, that’s for sure.

  26. I’m sorry to ask, these dishes are from which restaurant?
    Ruby Restaurant?

Yes, you can click the link on the word “here” in the 1st line…and that will take you to the post which will show you exactly which restaurant that was.

  27. next time you bring me to eat 5 dishes for RM50..
it must have udang galah also . kekekeke…
    can get in Sibu?

Udang galah…that plate, I think at least RM30-40. Then we order 4 other plates cheap vege, maybe can lah…your RM50 – your 5 sen like Malacca kereta lembu wheel.
