Somebody commented on an earlier post of mine and asked if we could get to meet should he come over to Sibu. Well, I checked out his blog and it certainly looked like he had been to a number of places…to eat so I told him that it would not be a problem. In fact, he has just been to KK a week ago solely for the food, believe it or not, and I know for a fact that if you go to some place on your own, a stranger in town and you do not have anybody that you know to take you around to eat the best that they have to offer, you may end up quite disappointed with the things you sample at the shops around your hotel and feel that it is not really worth the trip/visit.
Anyway, they arrived on Saturday afternoon, my friend and his missus from Kuala Lumpur (both originally Ipoh mali). The Air Asia flight was delayed a bit, not much – just 15 minutes and after picking them up at our brand new airport, I took them where else but here for a warm KOMPIA welcome…
We ordered the kompia set with the out-of-this-world pork belly, minced pork and the ones with chicken curry…
Needless to say, the two of them loved ALL of them and they liked the Horlicks Godzilla (drink) that came with the set too!
That night, there was a massive traffic jam owing to some very grand function at the hotel where they were staying so the most convenient place to take them for dinner would be here at this cafe – which is located right behind the majestic hotel building. If you click the link to the post, you will see all the things that we had which, of course, would naturally be the case as I wanted them to try nothing but the best at the cafe. It certainly was not the right time to try anything new in case we ended up disappointed.
And guess what! My friend brought me this – the beef noodle soup all the way from Jalan Ipoh in KL…
This is probably the place where he got it from.
Was it good? Well, I would say that it was nicer than the one from Menggatal in KK, Sabah and according to him, he knows of at least three beef noodle places in Jalan Petaling in KL and two are different – with salted vegetables and he is not too crazy over those. Hmmmm…I think that would be the same recipe as the one from Menggatal as it did taste to me like salted vegetable soup, quite unlike the beef noodle soup that I’m more accustomed to.
This place is just as generous as the one at Menggatal when it comes to the huge chunks of meat…
…and all the things inside but when it comes to the chili dip, I would say that Menggatal wins hands down…
The one here is nice but lacks the kick – it is not as fiery and spicy as those from KK.
All in all, I still think that the bottom line is the taste and where that is concerned, Kah Heong still gets my vote.
