I was in the vicinity of this bakery the other day and I decided to drop by to see what else they had to offer. So far, I’ve tried their garlic bread and also their chocolate cake and I thought they were all pretty okay.
The other day, I decided to go for their ham & cheese bun…
…but it was kind of disappointing. There was only a teeny-weeny piece of ham inside and the cheese tasted something like sour cream. I did not fancy the texture of the bread either – it was a bit too soft for my liking.
The coffee bun was not too bad…
…though it was not really all that fragrant. I remember how, many years ago, I went crazy over the coffee buns at this place when they first came into the scene – you just buy a few home and the whole house would be filled with the smell of coffee. Unfortunately, the quality gradually dropped and it was not as nice as before and my craving for those buns also diminished eventually and I stopped buying them altogether.
The egg tarts (RM1.20 each)…
…were a bit too bland and somehow, the pastry was not what I would be more accustomed to. It was so very soft that you would not be able to pick them up with the plastic tongs provided.
The banana cake (RM4.50 a loaf)…
…was good. The texture was nice and soft and on the whole, it tasted fine.
For one thing, I like this place because it is somewhat squeaky clean. They do not seem to have a lot of things to choose from so I guess there can be better quality control than at other bakeries in town with the mass production of all kinds of cakes, bread and buns…and the two guys, probably the ones who run the show, are always dressed up in their clinically-clean white chef outfits and this somehow gives a more impressive impression and places it a class above the rest.
Still, at my age, I shouldn’t be taking a lot of sweet things so I would not be dropping by and buying the things from there again anytime soon but it would be all right, I guess, if I would just indulge in them once in a while, don’t you think so?
Hmm…is this a new bakery in town? I’ve never seen it around.
Speaking of which I got some custard buns and this really healthy looking freshly baked bread with loads of nuts, seeds and dates. I’ve yet to try it, got it from Penang for breakfast. 🙂
Fairly new, couple of doors away from SCR – behind HSBC. It used to be Farley Bakery. I would be in the vicinity quite regularly – courtesy calls to Vincent Tan but this is only my 3rd visit to the bakery – selections limited and nothing sensational…so far.
The banana cake looks moist and yummy.
Ya, it was good…a lot nicer than many that I have tasted.
hoho! when u go to KL, u will have lots more food to try! =DD
I wouldn’t wanna eat things that I can get here, never mind if theirs are better and nicer. Would like to go for something different.
I only like those egg tarts with a fluffy pastry on the outside. I guess nowadays, not many people make those type of tarts.
Not those layered ones like puff pastry – like those dim sum ones. I prefer the regular egg tart ones – not really shortcrust, softer…but not as soft as these. These were almost like some kind of cake actually.
aiyoh, how unlucky!! 75% of your purchase aren’t nice at all?? must be very frustrated right?? but at least you ended up with the nice block of banana cake.. 🙂
Not really – sponsored by Vincent Tan, went to get the money and stopped by to buy some things to try for a well-deserved treat. Hehehehehehe!!!!
but come to think of it, it’s not easy to bake a banana cake that doesn’t taste decent right?? hahahaha, quite unfair to judge that but just my thought as a novice in baking~~ 😀
I’ve had not very nice ones – I think those at the stalls – sometimes, so black, wet and sticky…and the strong smell of banana essence – that I cannot stand!
The banana cake look good.
Not bad, I would say…
I feel that those breads & cakes are really expensive…
That day I bought a bun in one of the bakery in KL and I saw a lady bought until RM80 for breads….
Breads are expensive these days…
It is… One short loaf, just a few slices already over RM2.00. Most of the things at the bakeries here aren’t really great and nothing less than RM1.00 so I seldom drop by to buy – just once in a long while when I’m looking for something different for a change from the usual…and I would only go to the places and buy the things that are really good and worth the money.
Ya..why not. Drop by occasionally to indulge some sweet treats. The banana cake looks so moist….beh tahan…I think I want to hunt for some banana cake too… =p
Good luck! No problem getting some really good ones there, I’m sure.
Love the banana cake. Soft & moist. Not very keen on buns.
I don’t mind sometimes – something different for a change. Not cakes all the time…and personally, I prefer savoury to sweet.
I like Banana Cake. But many made it too sweet.
Did you try Payung’s when you were here? Eaten with ice cream, best lah!!! 😉
I guess it’s too soft because the baker added too much white flour inside the bun. The Banana Cake has a good texture; the ones I bake ended up looking odd and funny.
Dunno, dunno how to bake cakes and bread…but the banana cake was well done – just nice, the texture and the taste was good too.
The banana cake looks good. But difficult to find those with generous amount of banana used (so you can actually taste them) and not too sweet.
At Payung Cafe here, so very nice – can see the bits of bananas…but theirs quite expensive… Cafe mah! 😦
I can’t seem to resist walking into bakeries. However, just like you, I am sometimes disappointed with the quality of the buns and pastries. But I still buy better items and I agree with you that it is alright to indulge once in a while.
There may be isolated nice stuff, not many…but usually they are expensive. Sometimes I will buy, sometimes I take…and then I put back, sometimes, I just don’t bother… 😦
I love soft bun, like now, i am munching on my mini butter sugar bun, yummy and it is not cheap!! RM1.50 for a mini bun. tsk tsk tsk
Not cheap here too. Soft is nice, spongy…but this one, like so very soft, almost mushy… 😦
Your pic has left me with a yearning for banana cake 😉
+Ant+
Go on, go out and get one… Shouldn’t be difficult to find a good one there, unlike stuff like kompia or kampau. Yummmmm! LOL!!!
I love bakeries! Some garlic bread for me please! 😛
Should also go pastry tasting/testing somewhere, hehe ^^
Bread lover eh? You’re into baking? I’m more into savoury stuff at bakeries – puffs and pies, those things… New here, I see. Welcome and do come again. Thanks for dropping by.
The ham and cheese bun looks pathetic. Taste like sour cream lagi. Gone bad dy is it?
Dunno. Ya, pathetic’s the word. Will never buy again. 😦
bakery in sibu is rather mediocre. i wouldn’t say that the bakery in kuching is better but at least, decent. my father once almost quarreled with Chung Bakery staffs for making him to wait and wait for pre – ordered bread. Ever since, my family resorted to baking breads at home with a bread machine.
Ya…that’s best! No preservatives. Nothing sensational at the bakeries here. WeCare’s ok…a bit pricey, BreadSense, not really great – love the chocolate cake there though (and a lot cheaper than Secret Recipe), Hot Flavours has the best cream puffs…and ah yes!!! The chicken pies at Aroma! That’s why I seldom go to the bakeries around here – once in a long while perhaps when I feel like something different for a change.
no wonder you and my dad are good friends…cream puffs buddies! 🙂 have you tried chicken pie at New Capitol Restaurant? wuah! nice. but have to pre – order.
I had that a long long time ago when they were still at the old place – the KFC behind the post office. You mean they still make that? Oooo…I really must go and order one of these days – used to love it soooo much. I wonder if it is still as good…
I love banana cake. That reminds me to bake one soon. Long time since I had some.
Hmmm…too bad I’m already back in Sibu. Hehehehehehe!!!!
