Good enough for me…

I think I’ve mentioned this before in some earlier post of mine that this guy used to work at a hotel in town, baking cakes and stuff and eventually, he and a colleague of his, a Malay lady, left and opened their own bakery shops…

Chung's

I wouldn’t say I was really crazy over the stuff he bakes and sells, even though I quite like his mooncakes which are nice and a whole lot more affordable and I would buy them every year when the festival comes around, but at one time, I really loved his garlic buns…

Garlic buns

They were really good and not expensive and I heard of people buying them by the boxes to take them back to their own towns and cities to eat.

I bought a packet the other day and they still tasted great except that the price had gone up from RM1.00 to RM1.30 for 4 and I do wish that there could be a little bit of quality control as I noticed that they were not as evenly oval as before and some were big and others were much smaller.

Normally, I would pop them in the oven to toast a bit so that they would be slighter harder and very crusty at the top while still nice and soft inside – I loved them that way. Well, the other day, I went a step further – I cut the buns and spread a bit a garlic butter inside and stuffed them with bacon that I had grilled till crispy…

It certainly helped to make them look less plain, don’t you think?

After some 5 minutes or so in the pre-heated oven, I took them out…

Oven-toasted

They certainly tasted a whole lot better this way, I must say as it  brought the taste up to a whole new level. Perhaps, it would be nicer with some hardboiled eggs, mashed and a piece of lettuce or a slice of cucumber perhaps, but this definitely was good enough for me… Yummmmm!!!!

  1. Nice buns. At first I thought it was kompia, so excited….haha

Did your homemade kompia turn out to be something like this – like bread or buns instead? Well, kompia is unleavened bread, anyway so in essence, it is more or less the same. LOL!!! You’ll get to see some kompia in one of my posts next week… Stick around!

  2. Talking about bacon, I still have a packet of bacon-look-alike in my freezer… but I think they wont go well with small buns… So..did you finish all the 4 buns all by yourself? I think I could … the buns are so small…

No lah, our morning breakfast – two big ones for me and two small ones for the missus. 🙂

  3. Sometimes, I will drop by this bakery to get some breads…
    Your toast bread looks good.

One thing about these bakeries, if they have ham or sausage filling, you get only a tiny little bit inside. So disappointing.

  4. WAAAAA!!! this is so loaded, not only good enough for you, but very very the best for all of us lah!! hahaha.. how could you have such a crazy idea??? oooh-la-la, i like that, look at the bacon!! mamamia~~

Yum! Yum! Some of the bacon left in the freezer, so if you come over, I can cook that for you for breakfast. Bacon and scrambled eggs on toast coming up…!!!! Slurpsss!!!!

    1. next round: put a slice of fried egg, cucumber, lettuce and tomato.. wow, that would be perfectly lavish!! or maybe put Simple Person’s homemade burger patty.. but can that bun hold all them?? hahahaha~~ :p

Now, now…don;t get carried away! A little at a time… I wonder if SP will make his special burger for me when I go over to KL… Hint! Hint! LOL!!! 😉

  5. wahhhh…so you have bacon stocked up in your fridge eh? 🙂

Nope…my missus bought a packet a long time ago, probably for our daughter when she was home for the holidays but she was not keen on having it for breakfast and since it is there, I would use bit by bit for this and that and finish it off slowly but surely. I get very uncomfortable when there’s something in the fridge lying idle for a long time.

  6. With the bacon in it, it definitely makes the bun looks really good and a whole lot better to eat.You have lots of great idea of what to stuff inside. Yum!!! Yum!!

All up to one’s imagination – be creative. No need to stick to the old over-trodden tracks. Will be so boring eating the same things over and over again.

  7. Wow, those look so good but I am on a diet ler…you truly pack them in ! Bravo!!

Hello! Hello! Long time no see!!! Haven’t seen you around for ages. Hope you’re doing fine. You’re on a diet? Hope you are ok…. Take care now. 😉

  8. Good enough for me too. Certainly worth all those calories. How about kompia and bacon? Ever tried those before?

I think I have…and also with SPAM and luncheon meat and the rest. Personally, I feel these things go better with bread…or at least, with the sweet and softer version of the kompia – the chu nu miang. Goes to show that not all attempts at fusion will work all the time… 😉

  9. Heheh usually homemade bread is unevenly shaped also. Important is the taste is good, right?

Unfortunately, this isn’t homemade but thankfully, the taste was good… 😉

  10. Oh..ho..ho…..everything tastes great with bacon! Good idea to put it in buns like that. I must try!

I often eat it with bread or toast…or stuffed in croissants or buns like this, nice!

  11. courier some over pls.

Uiks bla pulak my relative open a shop there?

This one cannot lah…very soft, sure kamek…not like kompia…tahan lazak. Your relative shop, near Medan Hotel got one shop, you did not see kah…around same side as WeCare!

    1. Hahaha… that;s what I thought on first sight… one of ur relatives bukak kedai! LOL!

Many people by that surname what… I know one other blogger who comments regularly with the same surname too.

  12. Anything with bacon is nice lah…
But I prefer crispy garlic bread than buns 😀

That one, just get any bread, spread garlic butter and toast…

  13. Gosh… Those look simple yet delicious! I’d probably add a slice of cheese to have a richer taste.

Ya…but no cheese in the house. I am always dependent on what I can dig out from the fridge. 😦

  14. I bet those were delicious, you must like eggs I see that pop into many of your dishes. And that’s nice, they do add a nice flavor. My daughter loves them too. Well, she “claims” she just loves the egg whites, but that can’t be true, since she eats the yolk also. I usually include the entire egg, in the variety of egg dishes I’ve prepared. 😉

I do love eggs, no matter how they’re prepared…despite the many horror stories I’ve read or heard about them. The latest was that they must be eaten together, both the yolk and the white as they have a balance that will help avoid any of those unwarranted effects of eating eggs. I don’t really know what to believe as there are so many conflicting stories so the best thing is to eat them moderately. They say a limit of two a week would be o.k.

  15. Looks really yummy… but these could have gone well with almost any fillings, I think. 😀 Aiyoorrr… I’m fasting today… feels so hungry. 😦

Nice also even when eaten on their own…

  16. Quick and easy! I think I’ll add some mustard sauce ^_^

Not a fan of mustard…but that was so long ago. Must give it a try again sometime – maybe I would love it now.

  17. Good idea….simple but the most satisfying one especially for tea time.

Yes, at least enhance the taste a bit – makes it a bit special. 😉

  18. Nice!! It look very very nice and i am sure it taste superb too. Like you said add some lettuce or cucumber or maybe some avacado? Slurp!

Yup, all the extras would make it even nicer… Not so plain. 😉

  19. Bacon is magical! I always have some in my fridge.

Love it…but too expensive here and fat! Can’t have it too often. Usually I would grill it to melt the fat and pour that away…but there would not be much left after that. 😦
