Coming home…

Annie-Q came home to Sibu with her twins on Thursday, the 31st of May, and that very night itself, we went out for dinner at that regular dining place of mine.

Of course, she MUST try their pork belly with mantao (steamed buns)…

…and my favourite, the fish (tapah, no less) with the yummy thick brown gravy…

…and we also ordered the lemon chicken…

…that Melissa loved a great deal, and also their honey prawn balls…

…which were very nice as well.

The sea cucumber soup…

…was all right – a bit too sour for my liking but the twins thought it was the not-to-be-named soup so that would give everybody a fair idea of what it was like and how good it was.

Annie-Q must be so very disappointed as halfway through dinner, we were informed that they had run out of midin (wild jungle fern). She was looking forward so much to eating that. But she did get to eat the cangkuk manis fried with egg…

…and she ordered this plate of kangkong (water spinach) fried with belacan (dried prawn paste)…

…for her son, Cruz. She herself would not touch belacan or eat anything cooked with it but the irony is that the son loves it a lot! LOL!!! It was really very nicely done that night and everyone enjoyed it a lot despite the fact that I thought there were more stalk than leaves. Thankfully, the stalks were soft, not hard, so nobody had a problem with that actually.

I saw the people at the next table eating something that I had not had before – fried pumpkin with salted egg and it looked and smelt very nice so I wanted that as well. Unfortunately, when it was served – the chef had got it all wrong and dished out a plate of bitter gourd fried with salted egg instead. So, we sent it back and decided to cancel the order as everyone was already filled to the brim by then.

The bill came up to over RM170, inclusive of rice (some had seconds) and drinks, for the 10 of us (including Annie-Q’s brother and his wife and son). I went to the counter to settle it but was told that the lady had already left a deposit with them well before dinner started. Hmmm…that would be Annie-Q’s mum! Gosh! And to think that it was I who invited them out for dinner… I guess I will have to take them out again for dinner while they are in town – and hopefully, they will not beat me to it the next time around.

  1. 170?! that’s slightly more expensive than usual ah. but not that bad la the food looks good and the portion is not small. Adidas Extreme Power 5’s Futsal & Fragrance launch

Not really. The food alone for 10 people would probably be around RM150 and the fish would take a big chunk of it. That’s very good fish – tapah, no less… It does not come cheap. If we had ordered say, sweet and sour fish fillet, I think it would probably be around RM100 only for 10 persons then.

  2. Your hand so fast. We didn’t know last time. Now we know already. The only way we get to belanja u is to pay before we eat. Guess Annie’s mum knows you well. Hehehe…

No lah! Annie’s mum hand memang a lot faster one, never ever had the chance to foot the bill whenever we went out to eat. Shy lah – even when I invited, she would also go and pay one… 😦

    1. Lol but when we were there ur hand very fast.

Who belanja tak apa. Asal happy. U also bring so much hand letters to Annie and us when u come kl. πŸ™‚

Yalor! That’s the most important – as long as everybody’s happy – all the smiles and the laughter. We certainly need a lot of those to brighten up our everyday lives… πŸ˜‰

  3. pork belly with mantao! Yumzz… price is considered quite ok already since there’s fish and sea cucumber (very expensive-lah in KL). Used to eat a lot of sea cucumber for free when I was young cause my uncle owns a seafood supply shop. I don’t think one can get that amount for 10 pax… looks like somebody has not been eating out in a local Chinese restaurant in KL/PJ lately! XD

…and prawns, also not cheap plus portions were huge and it was a pleasantly nice air conditioned restaurant, not a grand one but not one of those coffee coffee shop kind of places. I would think it is very cheap – RM17 per head would not get you a decent meal if you go to those western restaurants, I’m sure.

  4. That amount of food for RM170 only?…no wonder lar Sibu ppl all millionaire.Everything so cheap, no wonder they can build palaces, drives big cars and wear rolex…tsk! tsk! tsk! Of all the food, I like the soup, kangkong belacan, fish…but only the sauce and I like to hisap-hisap the tulang part. The rest not bad but I still think Ruby’s food suit my taste best. Anyway, why Annie don’t take belacan one?…Aiyor, so rugi leh πŸ™‚

I love it here…but mainly because I went to Ruby way too often once but most everybody who came prefer Ruby. Perhaps not Annie – I think she is more used to the food they serve here.

  5. 170 is pretty reasonable for 10. I went to this new Thai restaurant last night in Penang, 10 of us including the in laws, and it was 262. Will be writing about that restaurant soon.

ps: i wouldnt mind having that pork belly with mantao all to myself! πŸ˜›

No, no…have to watch it. Still very young, must stay healthy… Once in a (long while) should be ok, I think.

  6. I know this place!!!

Ya…and you loved the pork belly with mantao! Yum! Yum!!! So much for your healthy eating, eh? But once in a blue moon – should be pretty all right. πŸ˜‰

    1. Will go back for more SINFULNESS! Then, repent at Tun Zaidi Stadium the next morning.

When? When? You can treat me to dinner to celebrate your recent successes…but I’m non-repentant – count me out on that last bit. LOL!!! πŸ˜€

  7. those photos look so familiar, recycled pics or taken all over again after the N-th visit?? haha.. anyway they sure looks good especially the sea cucumber soup.. πŸ™‚

New pics, different occasion… I think this was the 1st time I had the fish with the head whole – other times, all huge thick slabs of it. And can’t remember whether I had lemon chicken here before…but the pork belly is, of course, old news.

  8. I love the fish… but too bad the other day, I was very full and didnt manage to get a second piece… stomach said “no entry!”…. yes, Sibu, like Ipoh is famous for food and more food.. I have yet to try the soup… and I miss the midin too!

Come! Plan another visit to Sibu. Always welcome… Cheap and nice!!! πŸ˜‰

  9. Price quite reasonable for 10 persons and with all the awesome foods, well except the 1st dish. I will give that a pass I love that big chunk of tapah fish. Annie, you don’t know what you are missing (kangkong with belacan) and suprisingly your son loves it. Thumbs Up, boy.

The irony of it all – you avoid the fat pork like a plagues…but belacan isn’t all that healthy either. LOL!!! I think it was Shereen who emailed me something about pork fat – it’s not all that bad. Maybe I can share that in one post one of these days…

  10. Looks so yummy!!
    The fish looks nice!!

It was!!! Too bad when you came to Sibu this place was closed for the week. You simply HAVE to come again sometime…

  11. Did you make sure that they didn’t include the dish that you had returned to them? I like Kangkong, very expensive in my place where i not afford to buy. I only bought twice ( i think) in seven years.

Yes, we did…and the midin that we cancelled too. They also emphasized that when they calculated the total. No lah! They know us too well to try and shortchange us.

  12. so many nice dishes! i will tell myself, eat more vege eat more vege, else the meal will make me overbloated ><

    Latest: Sinful Breads

Too much meat will also lead to constipation. That’s why we usually order a number of veg dishes when dining out.

  13. FINALLY!! I get to try the food at Ming Mei Shi, even my mum also first time there, she also agree, the food was great and not expensive.
I don’t think, we can get this price in KL, at least RM200 and above.
Oh, the wobble wobble meat is good, my boys love it too! That night kankong not a lot stalks, it is because the three boys had all the leaves and left the stalks behind! hahahhahahahah
I heard, lately very rare can find midin, because of the hot weather, maybe this is the reason, that’s why that night they told us midin is finish. No worry, i already had my share last night, we order the food from Nice House and FINALLy i get to try the food there. hahha..very nice!
No worry on the bill, i am working ma, and we got more head count too, not nice to ask you to settle the bill. πŸ˜€

No mah… Your first night home – KL, your treat, here, I also want to treat mah… But never mind – at least, we enjoyed the dinner very much. Oh? So Nice House is open now? Hear it was closed for the Gawai.

  14. ooooooooooooooo… sea cucumber soup! I love sea cucumber. Collagen! better than that not to mention soup…

When are you coming over? I can take you to eat lots of that…sure will look a lot younger by the time you leave town. LOL!!!

  15. pumpkin with salted egg? that is something new to me too. gonna ask mum in law if she has heard of it or if she has the recipe:

You should be able to get that in KL. My friend, Mandy, posted a pic of that on Facebook yesterday…but it did not quite look like what I saw here…

  16. Hi, RM170 so cheap with all the delicious foods. Everything look so mouth watering, my stomach playing drum already. LOL
Better go home before my drool drip on the keyboard. hahaha

Hahahahaha!!!! You should make a trip here – very nice things to eat and you can’t find them over at your side. πŸ˜‰

  17. Ahh….so sad..midin sudah habis. I think bcos its not rainy season..that’s why midin oso more difficult to get.

Yup, that is a reason…and it’s the Gawai Dayak Harvest Festival – nobody going out to pluck for sale. They’re all celebrating and having fun…

  18. I would never say no to the wobble-wobble meat πŸ™‚ And RM170 for so many dishes, great value.

It certainly is! Wah!!! You’re so health-conscious too meh? Or are you watching your figure? Don’t bother lah – wouldn’t make much of a difference. Muahahahaha!!!!

    1. Hah, what health conscious? You salah read…I said I would never say no to the wobble wobble meat leh! It’s a big yes to wobbling with the wobble wobble meat!

Aha!!! I guess I read wrongly. Then, you’re certainly my kind of friend… Come, let’s go eat!!! Nom! Nom! πŸ˜‰

  19. yeah pork belly with mantao..
    I want I want i want…
All the food look so delicious.. yummy.. I think I could eat 3 bowl of rice..

I’m right here waiting. Come, make your plans quick… When will I see you in town? πŸ˜‰
