Baby, make it soon…

Actually, somebody told me sometime ago that the nasi goreng or fried rice at the Malay stall in this coffee shop…

SoonLuLai Sibu

…was very nice but I was taking my sweet time and did not bother to drop by to give it a try. Then, I heard from my friend, Yan, that the things there were pretty good…so the other day, I stopped by for a bite.

It turned out that an old friend of mine and his wife were running that coffee shop and I wasted no time at all in ordering the fried rice at this stall…

SoonLuLai Muslim stall

…which strictly speaking, wasn’t a Malay stall. I heard them speaking Melanau – not the Sibu/Kampung Nangka version so I guess they must have come from one of the towns downriver, maybe Matu or Daro. They were probably Muslims so I guess we can call this a Muslim or halal stall then.

The nasi goreng certainly looked good…

…and there was one whole fried chicken wing too…

When it was served, I paid RM5.00 and it certainly was a pleasant surprise when the guy gave me the change – RM1.50. Wow!!! That plate of fried rice cost RM3.50 only? And there was one whole chicken wing that came with it. If I’m not mistaken, if you buy one fried chicken or barbecued wing at some shop or stall, it would cost RM2.00…so that plate of fried rice was, in fact, only RM1.50. That was really very cheap indeed.

The food certainly looked popular as there were many customers having their lunch at the shop and most of them had something from this same stall as well. As for the taste of the nasi goreng, it was pretty good but I still think that my own is better. Hehehehehe!!!! I wished they had used a bit more ikan bilis (dried anchovies) and I missed having an egg in the rice, the way I would usually cook my fried rice…and besides that, I would prefer it to be a bit more pedas (spicy hot). I certainly must remember to give them some standing instructions the next time I go and eat there.

Unfortunately, the coffee was just all right, drinkable – this much I can say…and at RM1.70, if I remember that correctly, that would make it the most expensive that I have had anywhere in town. Other than that, I do wish they would do something to spruce up the place. It wasn’t exactly dirty but somehow, it seemed to have seen better days and was badly in need of a facelift to make it seem more comfortable and appear more appealing. For one thing, I was wondering what the name of the shop meant – soon you come? Well, on my part, all things considered, perhaps not that soon, I’m afraid…
