Two as one…

An old friend of mine, my ex-classmate, in fact, invited me to his parents’ diamond jubilee, their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday last week. Wow!!! 60 years together, two as one…

It was held at the grand ballroom at one of the hotels in town. My missus and I went earlier to avoid the jam and when we reached the venue, the sun was just about to set…

Sunset view at Kingwood

There were so many people and even though dinner started quite late, we did not feel the time rolling past as we were too engrossed in naming who’s who – all the familiar faces, some back from abroad even to attend this auspicious function.

This was the first dish that was served that night – our More-than-4 Seasons…

Kingwood More-then-4 Seasons

Unlike at the banquets I’ve attended over in the peninsula, most of the time here, we would get more than four choices. Now, what did they have in it? Beef, beef tendon…luncheon meat, spam, ham and bacon…

Kingwood ...bacon

Bacon??? Oooo…I like! And as if those were not enough, there were more in that array of delights!

Then came the second dish…

Kingwood black chicken soup 1

…and I was delighted that they had decided to do away with the not-to-be-named dish. Save the sharks!!! Instead they had black chicken…

…with fish maw and white fungus in soup that was so very sweet as they had dried scallops in it as well. Yum! Yum! I loved that a lot…but being in polite society, I had to stop myself and refrain from licking the soup tureen clean.

My missus just had a bit of the soup but would not touch the chciken…and she did not eat the roast duck either…

She does not eat duck and oh boy! She certainly did not know what she was missing. The duck was very well done – very tender and juicy. I lost count of how many slices I had that night. Hehehehehehehe!!!!

I had to go out for a while to make a call (to my daughter) and in the meantime, the next dish was served. When I came back, the rest at the table had helped themselves to the fried fish slices, leaving behind these for me…

They were pretty good – I think it was cod or one of those imported fish from Alaska or wherever that is nice but so very expensive. I just had a slice though as I was already very full by then after feasting on everything that came earlier.

Thankfully, what came next…

Kingwood mushrooms in a pumpkin 1

– an assortment of mushrooms served in a carved-out pumpkin…

…did not tickle my fancy. I thought it was excessively adulterated with msg so I just tried a bit and left the rest by the side of the plate.

The prawns with honey dew were very good though…

…and I had quite a lot of that even though I was already bursting at the seams. LOL!!!

The last course was the mixed fruit platter – I did not take a photo of that nor did I eat any. I couldn’t possibly take another bite of anything by then.

It was an enjoyable evening, catching up with current events as well as old times with old friends…and there were dances and songs including a few from…

Elvis of Sibu sings...

our very own Elvis Presley of Sibu who sang a medley of the King’s rock & roll numbers, “The Wonder of You” and “Can’t help fallin’ in love“.

Thanks so much, Robert, for the invitation and all the best to your parents and may God bless them with many many more blissful years together. Cheers!
