Allergies…

I know a number of people who are allergic to seafood, things such as crabs and prawns but I never had a problem with that and I do eat prawns quite regularly still…even though I hardly eat cockles, balitongs (siput sudut) and so on these days and I very seldom eat crabs but mainly because they’re too expensive and I would rather go for something more reasonably priced instead.

However, my missus and I were out for dinner on Wednesday night – if you may recall, I did mention that in my previous post and we had crabs…

…at this restaurant. They have the best crabs in town – big, fleshy and the flesh is really very nice and firm…but they do not come cheap, RM45 a kilo…

…so a plate of two or three crabs can easily go up to around RM100.00.

I loved their drunken steamed freshwater prawns…

The prawns were really huge – perhaps a bit too huge so the flesh was harder than usual. That is why I would rather have the medium-sized ones which, for one thing, is very much cheaper and the head is not as big. I love this pinkish orange gooey stuff in the head though – I’m not sure but they say it’s the brain!…

The Foochow-style tofu soup that we had was great but not the Foochow-style fried noodles…

I must say that there are a number of places around where one can easily get these noodles and they are a whole lot better.

The midin (jungle fern)…

…wasn’t anything to shout about either and the roast chicken…

…was like roast chicken! It was nice but one can get that anywhere and more often than not, they would taste just as nice.

All in all, the bill for the dinner, inclusive of drinks (some of the guys drank beer), came up to over RM200 and I guess the crabs and the prawns took up most of it.

On the whole, it was a nice dinner – I quite enjoyed it…and thankfully, despite having not eaten crabs for a while, I did not end up any kind of allergy. However, despite my request that they reduced the amount of msg in the food, there was still way too much for my liking and I ended up feeling very thirsty all night long. Tsk! Tsk!
