With a little bit o’luck…

I am a simple man, a simple old man…living a simple life, a simple and ordinary life…with a roof over my head and I drive an old 1.3 1st-generation Proton Wira. People have often asked me why I would not get myself a new, more impressive and flashy car. Well, I don’t see the need to as the old jalopy still serves me very well – at least, it gets me from one place to another (and like I told my blogger visitors, Sibu is so small – every place is about a hundred metres away) and it does not cause me any problems at all…and for someone my age, there isn’t much left for me to flash, is there?

The other day, however, somebody reversed right into the back of my poor car – stationary and parked out of harm’s way (Not quite, obviously!), and broke the taillight, left side…

As good as new

Now, don’t those VERY impressive and VERY flashy CRVs have sensors that will beep like nobody’s business when one is reversing and getting close to something? Tsk! Tsk! How did I respond to that? I was so distressed that all I could do was to exclaim mournfully, “Aduhai! Aduhai!!!! Kesian my kereta tua!!! Jangan lah keep banging the poor thing!!!” (This was the 3rd time, by the way! Same position, same situation!)

Well, to cut a long story short, I had the light replaced – RM45 only. What do you expect? It’s a Malaysian car and it’s a made-in-Malaysia spare part. I wouldn’t have got away that cheaply had it been one of those expensive “impressive and flashy” cars. The bumper is not really aligned…

Not really aligned

…but it does not matter as long as it is not about to drop off or anything.

I guess somebody up there was watching me that very same afternoon when I was coming out of the shop after buying a ticket – RM2 only…in the hope that a little bit o’luck may come my way after that unexpected stroke of misfortune. There, right outside the shop, I saw a man, armless, sitting by the pavement (never saw him around before) begging for alms and without a second thought, I gave him all the change I had in my hand…and as they say, what goes around comes around and it most certainly did. That night, when I checked the draw results, this was what I saw…

With a little bit o' luck

Lo and behold! My car number came out 3rd prize……and for RM2, I would get RM1K and that would more than enough to cover the cost of the new taillight.

I went to claim the money the other day and as it was not a draw day, there was only one counter open – the sole non-Chinese lady in that shop that I frequent. To me, she always seemed very sad – I had never seen her smile and all the time, ย she would just sit there doing her work – I guess she could not converse or socialise with the other ladies as they would be speaking Mandarin, all of them being Chinese. But after she had passed me the money, I took RM10 from the lot and gave it to her, saying, “Kasi awak minum kopi (for you to drink coffee),” and for the first time ever, I saw her smiling and I swore I could see tears welling in her eyes…and somehow, at that point in ย time, I felt a nice feeling deep inside and I smiled back at her and left…

Of course, I am not expecting to strike again just because of what I did but the thing is I do believe that sometimes in the course of a long and dreary day, plodding on and on doing a thankless job just for that little bit of money at the end of the month to put food on the table…

Mee Daddy curry flavour

…and make end’s meet, it may get a person down and a little gesture that may not mean much to us may go a long way to make that someone’s life a little better…if only for a moment.ย Ever so often, I have heard or read all the rantings, all the criticisms, all the cursing and swearing at the people at the service counters in government offices, banks and places like that…and I do believe that if everybody is nicer to them, some, if not all, will surely reciprocate. Don’t you think so?

  1. This time….I didn’t laugh out loud, I smiled, with tears welling in my eyes! I bet she will remember you for your kind gesture and will continue to give you the smile whenever and wherever you 2 run into each other…

I’m sure she will. They all do – those counters that I frequent. Not a matter of money but a nice greeting, a smile and a thank you would be enough to make the day a little brighter…

  2. your poor car.. and it was really a lucky day for you at the 4D.. Should I start buying 4D too? Hey, we have the same car.. can some of your luck brush off me too? ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Your very flashy sporty looking Knight Rider? Also a Proton Wira kah? Well, at least it’s not a 1st generation 1.3… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. I’m so happy for you. A perfect example of one good turn deserves another. Now I wonder why I didn’t ask you for your car number when you ranted in fb ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Yes, you should have…and get a share of the good fortune but then again, if you had, maybe the number would not come out. It’s all pre-destined…

  4. Aiyor…so sad and melancholy your post today. What a very nice man you are….a gentle giant ( opps! ). Anyway, mee daddy so expensive lar…poor people pun cannot afford to eat that somemore with an egg lagi. Cili merah also so expensive now. That is more like a snack for the rich nowadays. You should put nasi putih with kicap only…muahahahaha. Have a lovely day, Arthur. One good turn really deserves another.

Expensive in NZ lah…where all the people are so very rich one. Here, the mee around 60 sen and the egg 30 sen…and the chili picked from the back of the house – altogether, less than NZ40 cents only…and cheaper than kampua at the shops. You have a good day too… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. oh well, you are still flashy in your own way. Men and their cars… wah u so lucky hor! Huat ah! ๐Ÿ˜›

Yes, nice to be lucky once in a while… Me flashy? I wonder how… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. I have never believed in accidents coming out in 4D but you have proven me wrong! ๐Ÿ™‚

How lucky of you! RM 1,000 is nothing to sneeze at. I’ve personally *NEVER* won on 4D except this one time in Kuching where I got about RM 26 or something like that on one of those Toto lucky picks for the jackpot.

Good on you to pass RM 10 to the sad counter lady. I’m sure you made her day and yes, I do believe that what goes around comes around.

If anyone deserves the RM 1,000, it’s you buddy. I’m glad something good came out of the incident. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the kind words, Huai Bin. Come, I’ll treat you to dinner the next time you come home… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Congratulation!!! Wow, it definitely worth the bumps(not the headache though). Next time get your car a chrome bar, whoever bang it yang kena kau kau, lol!

    p/s: Happy 4 u too!

Thanks. Yes, that would be a great idea… Reinforce it like a war tank. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. Congratulation on the winning!!! Happy for you sir! Definitely worth the bumps(not the headache though).

Next time can consider get a chrome bar for your car, whoever bang it yang kena kau kau, lol(jokingly)!

Ya, it’s an old car anyway…so if there is sure to be a lucky strike after a bump, go ahead – bump as many times as they like. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Oh Gosh! Finally… I manage to post a comment in your blog! Congratz to me-self! LOL!

Yup! Lots of people having problems with wordpress when it comes to commenting – dunno exactly what’s going on… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  9. As i told u, I used to drive the same old jalopy but it served me well for many years…….but when it has passed down to my bro, it became one ‘back to future’ car…LOL!!

Wow….you are so lucky! Never in my life strike a lottery…..

Oh? So your brother modified the car lah? Probably ended up looking something like Isaac Tan’s car… Definitely not something an old guy like me should drive. Like some old fart undergoing a mid-life crisis. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. fuyoh!! you are so lucky man, so i guess that little accident actually bring you some prosperity luck!! hahahaha, i was thinking, the bloggers visited you a little earlier.. if they were there in Sibu now, probably they are belanja with more expensive and nice food from Arthur, hahahaha~~ :p

Too bad they came a bit too early. But there’ll be some more coming at the end of April…so I will save the money till then – can have BIG dinner together… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Arthur, why do you carry on about being old and poor?? OLD?? Sweetie, youโ€™re only 1 year older than my brother and 3 years younger than my BIL (hubโ€™s side) โ€“ these 2 gentlemen definitely arenโ€™t saying theyโ€™re old and are actually living their lives fully and actively ๐Ÿ™‚ POOR?? All these lovely posts of your meals out and you even have prawns in your homecooked breakfasts leh… you are confusing me.

Wah, RM1K winnings – that’s a lot of money, isn’t it? Enjoy your winnings….now you can afford to courier some Mee Daddy to Shereen and me ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ok…not poor but not rich either…and definitely not rich enough to dine in style at posh restaurants having lobsters, oysters, caviar…and fine wine like some people…but at least, I’m happy and contented and lead a comfortable enough life – many rich people can have anything they want but they’re not happy for one reason or another.

As for being old, there can be no denying that! Drawing a pension, enjoying senior citizen privileges – that’s old, definitely not young…but still young at heart and young in spirit and active, not infirm yet…but the bottom line is, I’m definitely no spring chicken.

Courier? Just because I have a little money you want me to squander it all away kah? Eeeeee….some friend, you are. Not worth “donating” most of it to the postal services…and all for the sake of sending some instant noodles over. Like I said, I’m old…but I’m not infirm…yet! I can still think quite sensibly.

    1. Clap!clap!clap! I’m with you on this one, Yoong!….especially the part about mee daddy…hahahaha. Arthur Wee, it is not that you are POOR, it’s just that you are prudent and very down to earth. Not like some who kocek only got seposen but want to show to the world that they are at the same level with Bill Gates. Anyway, you are as old as you think you are and with you, I know that you are very young at heart….so happening and kids love being around with you. I know so as Justyn were very taken with you and still speaks of you fondly and really look up to you too. So, no more old and poor talk from now on!( Poor people got semi-D house and 2 cars,ah?)

See my reply to Yoong. House and cars – had to scrimp and save, pay back loans every month for years…and years. At least I don’t owe anybody anything now – I know many – already retired, living on their measly pensions…and still having to play their loans. Thankfully, I’m not THAT poor!

Yes, I’m young at heart and get along well with young people – but I do not dress and behave young – would be so ridiculous to see an old man with spiky, dyed hair, tight clothes like those K-pop stars, studs and earrings and going clubbing and all… I’ve had it all during my time and that’s more than enough for me already. No need to push it…

    2. …and, Arthur, you’re not allowed to complain about the courier charges now, not after your RM1K winnings. And you will be sending the Mee Daddy to me at the E&O Hotel in Penang instead of Perth – save a lot on courier charges so maybe you can send more Mee Daddy! I am at the hotel as of 25th April, for a few nights, so you have plenty of time to courier to me. And I will on-courier some to Shereen when I get home. You say you sayang Shereen and I mah….so, deal or no deal?

Go and buy in Penang, sure they have at Giant or Carrefoure or any supermart – a bit more expensive, never mind (RM4.90 in KL, only RM3.20 in Sibu)…and tell me how much. I will TT the money into your bank account!!! I sent poslaju to Penang before…3 or more times the cost of the noodles – and come to think of it, I think that was a really silly thing to do. Never again!!!

    3. My apologies, Arthur – if I have said the wrong thing and upset, sorry yah. Love you too much to want to upset you leh. Still sayang me, yes? ๐Ÿ™‚

No, no, no, no…!!! You’re not getting away this easily. Must be punished! Bring out the whip and the chains!!! Mauahahahahaha!!!!

      1. Lovely…but you forgot my candles ๐Ÿ˜‰ You be good today.

I’m ALWAYS good… YOU, be good today and everyday, ya? And I mean good and not good in any other sense of the word. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. Sorry to hear about your car but congrats for striking the 4d. Very nice of you to give the lady a little tip from your winnings…..
Actually I also like our proton cars…..parts are very much cheaper..(except Waja)….
You can get your mechanic to rivet the bumper back in place. Alternatively, they can also tie it to the brackets using wires internally……no one will notice….

Wah, strike 4d liao ….celebrate by eating maggi mee meh? lol

You drive a Proton too? No worries, people can bang as they like – cheap to maintain. Imagine if I had a posh car – the RM1k would not be enough to pay for spare parts and repair works, that’s for sure. Ya…but not Maggi – made-in-Sibu Mee Daddy no less! Hehehehehehe!!!!

  13. third time lucky hahaha..as long as the car can still move and not causing too much in repair or maintenance kira okay already la. Drive flashy cars also kinda dangerous leh. Lots of car thief and in KL even hijacking.

Yalor…like what I told a friend on Facebook – I can park anywhere, bright or dark, crowded or secluded – no worries about it being stolen. If anybody steals it, I would personally send a ‘thank you’ note – saves me the trouble and the expenses of having to get people to come and tow it away to sell as scrap metal! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Actually, my nephew (missus’ brother’;s son – driving a Mercedes Benz in KL, got stopped, pulled out of the car and beaten up and landed in hospital…and they drove the car away…and months already, no sign of the car since!

  14. A very touching post and makes tears in my eyes.I just wonder out there any more kind soul like you. A little kind gesture puts a smile on her will surely make her day brighter. Hope you strike some more. I also drive an old Proton Iswara 1.3 of about 14 years already but it still serves me well.

14? Mine’s a little bit older than yours…but my missus’ Saga is a lot older. I actually like the Saga better – solid, more secure, more power (1.5S)…but she does not take good care of it…so you can imagine the rest lah!

  15. Poor car of yours, kena langgar buntut same spot for three times. But third time “lucky”, huh…kena lottery, mah. Congrats on your winnings. I’ve never won any lottery before ๐Ÿ˜ฆ ..but then again, I only bought lottery twice in my life! Anyway, it was certainly a nice gesture from you and you probably made her day with your thoughtfulness. God bless ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks. I guess it is up to us to make this world a better place in which to live. I see some people’s blogs and also on Facebook – not a good word, moaning and groaning…so negative towards everything and I wonder about the quality of their lives (and I can imagine the effect on the lives of their families and the people around them – I would not hesitate to UNFRIEND anyone like that!) Whatever it is, it is still a beautiful world – and we can at least try to be happy in whichever way we can… ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. support proton is good ๐Ÿ™‚ i bet those flashy cars are more commonly found around KL

Latest: Authentic Thai Food outside Thailand!

You can ask those KL and Ipoh bloggers who came whether there are flashy cars in Sibu or not…and while you’re at it, ask about the houses here too. Shereen! Shereen! Where are you? You can tell her, Shereen…

    1. Omg! Don’t even get me started on the house, man! It’s like there is no poor man in Sibu…houses all so huge…bigger than most high class houses in those so called high class areas in KL! Also, so many those big tankers (flashy cars) on the road…the bigger the car, the better I think in their mind. Those who have not been to Sibu will find it hard to fathom how rich Sibuans are but that’s the truth. In fact, on the flight back to KL, we saw a group of men…don’t look so flashy but when they lift up their hands to adjust the air-cond, they have Rolex on their wrist..and they are genuine ones and it’s not even a level entry Rolex!…pengsan!!

Guess you haven’t heard of the kampua guy in Sibu…who bought a Rolex King and the next day, the IRD people were at the shop, counting how many plates he sold in one day…and multiplying that by the time he had been in business (since I was a kid). He was fined a fortune for tax evasion…

The same with kompia lady at a miserable looking stall by her house in one of the small lanes in Sibu – in business since my school days…and some people took photos and submitted an article to the papers. Once published, the IRD people came…and the same thing happened to her. Heard she owns a few nice big houses. three at least, quite unlike the one where she stays and runs her business. That is why when eating there, must take photos secretly. She will scold, saying, “No need to take photos! We are famous enough already!!!”

      1. I’m quite surprised that none of the bloggers that visited you recently did not make any post on those huge houses in Sibu!!..lol!

They did mention that when they were here…but not in the posts in their blogs.

  17. Glad your car is back in shape and you even won RM1 K! =D I believe that when you treat others good even unknown. something good will happen. =)

What goes around comes around… This is always the case.

  18. Why I did not get any prize money?? I bought my car number also after accident but didnt kena! well, never have luck with all those 4D, toto etc.

You are good man and good people always been rewarded in the end. Good things come after bad things. ;p

LOL!!! God works in mysterious ways. You’re working – I’ve retired…depending on a miserable pension. I don’t have that much money to throw away unnecessarily… ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hmmm…people say “malang tak berbau” meaning bad luck will just keep on coming – thank goodness that isn’t true in my case.

  19. my 2nd comment.. the 1st one got hanged while i was logging in to FB… ok, what did I write just now..
Oh, i said that we went at the wrong timing.. this week is a better time to go to Sibu! I am sure my blogger friends will agree with me… right, Arthur? lol..
You certainly had made her day.. maybe she was worrying about her meal on her table that day and suddenly Santa Claus flashed her a red note! (better if a bigger blue note, eh?) ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, you can always come again… RM1K only, want to give so much. Last time, I won 5K, I gave a blue note and to this day, the girl will call out to me calling me “towkay”, all smiles and speaking so sweetly everytime I drop by the shop – so malu, where got towkay? Tsk! Tsk! My missus doesn’t like her – said she’s very unfriendly. See! How being nice and generous can change people’s attitude towards a person… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. AH! So sweet and so kind of you!!!

Hmmmmmm…you think your RM1k can last till June ar? hahahhahahhahahah…just kidding la.

Your bowl of curry instant noodles look very good!!! yum yum!

No worries! When you come, bring good feng shui…I will surely strike again! Muahahahahaha!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. You, are what this world needs more of. It’s getting a little (what an understatement) too materialistic, this world, and greed is getting in the way of everything … even sharing a smile. But, I can’t complain too much considering the government officers are so much better than what they used to be, don’t you think?
You’re a good soul. Good things happen to good people, if not now, then at some time in the future. You’re not poor, you’re rich … in your heart. And that’s all that counts. You have my greatest respect, Arthur, even tho I’ve just met you.
(And I love my beat up little car too!) ๐Ÿ˜€

Yes, yes…that I have to agree. I am rich with love and affection from family and friends, so very blessed and that’s more than I can ever hope for in this world. Ya…no worries when driving a jalopy – knock as you please, scratch as much as you want…it’s just an old car. Wouldn’t feel the same if it had been one of those expensive high-end vehicles. Glad to have met you too – regards to Peter and his missus, if you get to see them. The missus was an English teacher too – in a school located in Sg Merah (you know where that is now!… ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

    1. I believe you’ve still got me mixed up with someone else…. or maybe I’m totally zonked.
It doesn’t matter … I’d like to know who the other Ping is tho ๐Ÿ™‚

Oops!!! Sorry. I keep thinking you’re Quay Po’s friend, Peng, who came with her to Sibu that day… I think you corrected me before but somehow it had just slipped my mind. Old man like that lah… See, Yoong! Who says I’m not old!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      1. Heh heh! Senior moment only, not old. Not old lah, just a little grey! muahahaaaa!

Oh no!!!! Talk about greying, went for a haircut yesterday and sooooo much grey hair! My crowning glory was my pride and joy – so old already, still a head full of black hair – not a lot but all black…but looks like it is turning silver. Never mind. it will probably make me look more distinguished, more respectable…

    2. Arthur, I met Ping in person for the first time this afternoon for lunch. We both agree that we going to call you Mr. Lucy! muahahahaha

Ohhhhhhh??? She’s the one who made those pineapple tarts??? *switches to saccharin-sweet tone* Hello, Ping! Any friend of Quay Po is a friend of mine…I bet your pineapple tarts tatse great. Hint! Hint! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Muahahahahaha!!!!!

  22. Oh, that’s my house number. I also ‘kena’ this number before because I bought 4D when my auto gate opened for no reason. I won RM200 but I only buy lottery occasionally nowadays.

What a coincidence!…LOL!!! So you missed this big one! Hmmmm….who knows, even bigger one coming? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I just found out that my dad did ‘kena’ RM1 of this number. Good for him. He is not greedy though because he will buy only RM1 or RM2 for each number.

Ya…same here! I will also buy RM1 or 2 only. I know I’m not destined to be filthy rich so no need to be too greedy. LOL!!!

  23. Hi, congrat on your winning of 4 ekor, not bad, huh! No worry of driving old car as long as it can still travel around. Regardless new car or old car… my boss always tell me a car without any scratch is not called a CAR. hahaha

    For you:-

I went outside to find a friend
But could not find one out there,
I went outside to be a friend
    and friends were everywhere.

Friends are seldom found, they are made.

Have a great evening and enjoy your dinner tonight be it rice or porridge or mee goreng.

P/S I’m craving for mee goreng now. LOL
And your bowl of maggi mee with eggs… yum yum I’m hungry now.

Nice poem…and how very true. The onus is on us…to reach out and touch somebody’s heart and make this world a better place for you and me.

  24. `…and I quote a famous poem, Desiderata: With all it’s sham and drudgery, it is still a beautiful world. With that, ladies and gentleman, I rest my case. Thank you.’ Still as poignant now as it was when muttered on stage all those years ago.

And still crystal clear in your memory, eh? Ya…I try to keep the lines in mind and be guided by them each passing day of my life – truly wise words, indeed.

  25. Congrats on your win. Think the chinese has a saying “Siu choy em chot, tai choy em yap” ~> small money does not go out, big money does not come in.

You have a sweet heart…you’ll be very blessed for your kind heart:D

Thanks. I truly am so blessed in more ways than one and I am grateful for that’

  26. OMG! congratulation!!! And you are so kind.

Same story today, um, not to say same, but, i dint take any action.
My mum give me ride home everyday and at the same time go to “tabao” (take away food for dinner), too.

There is a popo (old lady-she is humpbacked, look poor) will also tabao at the same place that we always do, the thing is, she is not tabao for either herself or family, but, CAT, stray cats.

I look at her, my mum said she always does this way, buy food for stray cats. My heart like melting. I tell myself if I still manage to meet her, i’ll donate some money for her.

Vist me or drop me comment, latest:http://karen900415.blogspot.com/2012/03/im-ready-to-scarify-to-be-toy.html

So sweet of her – I would give to the disabled ones, not the healthy-looking – sometimes aggressive ones. Do give when you see her next. If you’re a Christian, in the Holy Book, it says, “Whatever you to to the least of My brothers, you do until Me.”

P.S. Your first time here? A warm welcome and do come often. Will link you in my blogroll.

  27. hey Simple OLD Man living in a simple life…
hmm .. u get my words from my blog? ….
of course it suppose to be SIMPLE YOUNG MAN.. lol …..
psst .. it also happen to me also…
that day when I renew my passport..
my passport number came out n i strike 3rd prize also…

Passport? So many digits? Hmmm…some people can twist and turn numbers…and strike! I really dunno all this – very straightforward one. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  28. Sheesshhhhh, the last time when my car was banged by someone, I did not buy any numbers. Silly me!! Who knows I might have won some instance cash of ten of thousands of ringgit!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Well, let’s hope there’s no second time…just for the sake of you trying to see if you’ve any such luck. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  29. U r so lucky to strike lottery. I’ve never strike any before…….. And salute for your generosity for giving the lady RM10 for minum kopi. U r a kind man. ๐Ÿ˜€

At my age, I do not need that much money anymore…so with the extra, can afford to be a bit generous and kind to others. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  30. You give me RM10.00, I not only smile, I GRIN!! kekekeke

Bluff!!! You scatter RM10.00 notes on the streets as you walk around…like scattering flower petals. So rich! LOL!!!
