On the way…

The other day, after I had left my parents’ house, done with babysitting my mum for the day, I headed to my mechanic’s workshop in Sungai Merah. I decided that I should get my car thoroughly checked and serviced and repaired so that it would be totally roadworthy before my daughter comes home today and my blogger-guests arrive – smallkucing & her family and Quay Po would be arriving on that same flight and tomorrow, Yee Ling will be here in the morning and Claire and two of her kids in the afternoon.

Since I had not had my lunch yet, I decided to stop on the way at this coffee shop and have a quick one before proceeding to my actual destination. I chose to have the nasi campur (mixed rice) from the Malay stall there and I had a serving of their very nice shrimps…

ChoonSeng nasi campur - shrimps

…and the beef liver…

…that I also loved a lot. In fact, I prefer beef liver to chicken…or even pork, cooked this way or in  a similar manner.

My third choice was their sotong (calamari)….

ChoonSeng nasi campur - sotong

…which was no less delicious than the other two selections.

That plate of goodies and rice cost RM3.50 only and to wash all that down, I had a glass of their very famous coffee, one of the best, if not THE best in town – and I chose to have their kopi peng kau-kau (iced extra strong coffee with lots of condensed milk)…

This was RM1.90 a glass…and I must say that it certainly lived up to its reputation. Yummmm!!!!!

So, after that very satisfying lunch, I went happily on my way…

  1. you r suppose to wait for us for tat! hahaha… last few weeks ago, the client decided to ‘korban’ 2 cows for reaching their 2011 target, and i gotta taste the best liver rendang ever… freshly slaughtered…

Yummmmm!!!! That must be so very nice. I love liver! 🙂

  2. wow, Rm3.50 was like damn cheap, nice food with good portion too !

I thought so too. Generous servings and very delicious – value for money. 😉

P.S. Your first time here, Ken from Penang? Thanks for dropping by and a warm welcome! Will link you in my blogroll, so do come again. 🙂

  3. the other day i tapaoed a malay chapfan (economic rice) and i took a piece of fish and ONE sotong and it costs me a whooping 7 bucks! ooouch!

Nasi kandar shop? I had one sotong with rice in Penang and it was over RM10…but it was a BIG sotong! LOL!!! 😀

  4. I like beef liver cooked this way too, but I prefer it to be spicy, with lots of chillies. That’s how the nasi campur near my place cooks it and it always sells out fast. 🙂

RM 3.50 is really cheap, it’s a bit more over here, but then again I always grab a lot of stuff. Like Constance mentioned, sotong is something that you have to be careful with – nasi campur/kandar places can *really* slaughter you with that.

Yup! Been there, done that…but I could not resist the sotong! It was huge and like calling out to me! Muahahahahaha!!!! Hmmm….now that you mentioned it, it wasn’t really spicy. Maybe they have to cater to Sibu people’s taste – many can’t take very spicy stuff here. 😦

    1. Haha! I know what you mean. I always cannot resist the sotong too, especially the huge ones in nasi kandar places with janggut “beard”.

I noticed that too – the nasi campur here is a lot spicier than Sibu. Catering to the local palate as you mentioned, that sounds right. 😀

But they’re learning. Getting better now…unlike in the past when the Malay stalls would hardly have any Chinese customers – the food’s too spicy for them…or the tastes too strong for their delicate tummies.

  5. Beef liver?..euwwww!!!!..and you have been naughty, not a sliver of veg on ur plate..tsk!tsk!tsk!

Ummmm….rice tu, got fibre already kan? Muahahahahaha!!!! Here, the Malay-cooked veg, not nice lah…unless masak lemak and the like. That stall that day, tak ada…

  6. what?? altogether only slightly more than RM3?? kidding, can never find this in KL anymore!! can’t believe this..

KL people so very rich mah! So must pay more loh!!! LOL!!!

  7. somemore your vege-less rice can already cost more than RM6 here in KL.. hmmm, the prawns and squid looks good leh, but cholesterol level is also very handsome, hahahaha~~

Never mind! Eat now, pay later! Hehehehehehe!!!! 😉

  8. Yumm! But I’d stick with beef rendang 🙂 You love your prawns, don’t you 😉

You don’t? Should eat more. Great aphrodisiac!!! LOL!!! 😀

    1. I do, I do!! I love my prawns!! Enjoy your makan sessions with your visitors, have lots of fun 🙂

      Scratch! Scratch!!! LOL!!! 😉

  9. Not the beef, but give me the kopi peng kao kao!

    Okok….see you guys tomorrow!!!

Eeeeee…they’re on board the aircraft right now!!! I’m so excited… Can’t wait! Already bought kompia and masak hitam for their snacks in hotel. Yummmmm!!!!! 😀

  10. Wow wow wow! KL Bloggers are going over to Sibu! Have a blast Arthur and can’t wait to read more about it 😀

Yaaaaaa!!!! Hopefully, they’ll have such a good time that more bloggers will want to come my way. Half-dead asking people to come but everyone would rather go elsewhere. Tsk! Tsk!

  11. Arthur is going to be very busy this weekend!! So are we….. our mouths will be very busy too!! hahaha….

Hurry! Hurry! We’re starting off without you… 1st stop – Sarawak laksa, tonight…Ruby!!! Nom! Nom! Nom! 😀

  12. Woh, 3.50 for all the good stuff…….got sotong also…..very reasonable price…..here one sotong sometime these people charge RM6

*faints!!! But it’s a BIG one, I’m sure. These are all very small… 😉

  13. Correction not babysitting but mummysitting haha. Whoa all are my favorite, shrimps & sotong. Not so much into beef liver but beef hati but those were the days. All for RM3.50? Over here the nasi kandar “Wood” restaurant would charge RM9 for a plate of rice with only sotong. Wow you would be pretty busy with the bloggers over the week.

Ya, I’ve been to that Wood place – expensive! Sigh!!! This cannot eat, that cannot eat…eat a little bit once in a while, ok lah. 😉

  14. Wah, makan spree with blogger mommies soon, wish all enjoy and have great moments!
p/s: The Nasi lemak memang worth it!

    Huh? That’s nasi campur… Yes,the feasting has started. Nom…nom…nom!!! 😉

  15. the shrimps do look fresh and most importantly they are nicely peeled. I am lazy at peeling small prawns but i don’t mind peeling tiger prawns. hehe

Me too. Sometimes, if they’re fried till crispy, I would just eat the shell. Chitosan…can help me slim down. Muahahahahaha!!!!! 😀

  16. Beef Liver? Eeeeeeeee….i prefer beef rendang. LOL! Tell you i am weird, i willl take chicken liver and pork liver but not beef.

RM3.50????? CHEAP!!!!!!!!! My usual malay mix rice, just one chicken with vege and an egg already cost me RM6!!!!!!!!!

Your glass of kopi already with milk? Look so kau, hardly can see the milk.

Ah! I can feel your excitement, with Melissa back home and all the KL gang in Sibu, you sure got a busy weekend! Melissa and Kathy took the same flight back to Sibu? Next week will be all the nice food post ya??? Ok, i better skip a week not to drop by. hahahhahahha

    Have fun!

No worries! No time to upload the photos and blog about what we do… Will have to wait till everybody’s gone… 😦 You in KL bah!!! Happening place with all the rich people, so of course, must pay more lor… LOL!!! 😀 Looks like we’re the exact opposite – I prefer beef liver to pork or chicken – not really that crazy about chicken, the texture.

    1. Annie,
Starting a few days from now ( don’t know when Arthur will hit us with his food posting ), I’ll be MIA too…not only from his blog but from FB too.Takutttttttt lor!

No lah!!! No time to upload photos and share. Too busy taking everybody around…and eating!!! You’re safe for at least a week…. 😉

  17. Yo…I wish I can have that plate of deliciousness !!!! Beef Liver and those sotong and those shrimps….@ RM3.50 Gosh that was cheap…over here it will costs more than RM8 😦 Lucky you Melissa will be back….and more eating when Kathy , Veronica, Yee Ling and Claire arrived LOL! Have fun with them !

Wah! Ipoh also so expensive kah? Ah well…it’s a city what? City people very rich… Muahahahahaha!!!! 😀 Melissa’s home and some of the group…and the feasting has started. Yee Ling & Claire will be flying in today. Wish you could join us too!

  18. RM3.50 is really cheap for so many types of dishes you chose, but the kopi is used to be RM1.70 😦

    Latest: Mamak or Indian?

You know? You’re from Sibu? Ya…the coffee shops raised all the prices a few years ago when the price of petrol went up. Tsk! Tsk!

  19. well, it looks really satisfying indeed. I can just imagine the smile across your face after makaning here.. lol! 🙂

kopi peng kao kao! Hope its not too sweet though.

Never mind! Once in a while… I usually drink kopi-o.

  20. I am glad you did not take me go eat beef liver. Not my cup of tea.

We were there – Choon Seng at Sg Merah but only for the coffee and the canai – they had not had everything ready for their nasi campur yet. We were too early… LOL!!!
