Wonderworld…

Sometime before the Chinese NewYear, I heard that they had opened another supermarket in town somewhere further in from where the fairly new Giant Megamall is located but of course, I could not be bothered about it…but it certainly got me interested when Hang Yuh, my ex-student who was home from Kazakhstan for the festival, mentioned that he had had the best barbecued pork there but in his opinion, I probably would not be interested in going to eat there as it was a coffee shop and not one of those classier places that I would frequent. Excuse me, Hang Yuh! I do go to the coffee shops around town and I do eat cheap stuff at cheap places – in fact, I would very much prefer that as this old pensioner hasn’t got that much money to spare. Sobssss!!!!!

Well, intrigued by the fave review that I had been told, the other evening, I drove all the way there with my missus to look for the place. It wasn’t difficult to find – a short distance after the roundabout along the road to the secondary school (SMK Sg Merah), to the right if you’re driving in. You can see the supermarket from the main road – except that they call it a departmental store and don’t ask me anything about it as I do not know. I did not bother to go in and check out the place. I saw a one-shoplot cafe; oh gosh, not another one…and further up, round the corner was the coffee shop – the Wonderful Restaurant, it is called.

I was pretty surprised as it was still quite early, around 6 in the evening and there were already quite a lot of people there…and one would be able to see the barbecue stall at a corner of the coffee shop…

…with slabs of pork belly, chicken wings, parson’s noses and sausages cooking over the hot burning charcoal…

We had the pork (RM6.00 a slab)…

…but we did not think it was all that great. It certainly could do with some tastier and stronger marinades, I must say. It was quite nice with the chili dip that came with it but still, I would not want to drive all the way just to eat that again.

The chicken wings were very nice though…

…though a bit more expensive at RM2.50 each unless they’ve raised the price elsewhere too and I am not aware of it.

I ordered the Shanghai mee (RM5.00) for my missus from a stall in the coffee shop…

…and a plate of beef noodles, dry for myself (RM4.50)…

Both were at best, so-so and not anything to shout about.

I don’t think I’ll be heading that way again, I’m afraid, and if I do, it probably would be to try the cafe…or perhaps, when other eating joints open in the presently-vacant shops in all the buildings in the vicinity.
