Not what it seems…

I saw this place…

AnsonSibu

…when I was having dim sum some two or three doors away and I thought it looked unimpressive with its minimal, simple decor and it appeared to be serving western food.

Not long later, I heard people saying that it would be one place worth trying so the other day, my missus and I dropped by for lunch.

They have free wifi there…

– you can just get the password from the waiter or somebody.

It seems that they serve American breakfast – sausage and eggs with a choice of toast, french toast or pancakes for RM3 something, if I remember correctly and they have all kinds of pastas as well. From 11.30 a.m. onwards, you can order from the main menu…

…and I had the mixed grill (RM12.90)…

…with its huge chunks of beef and lamb with black pepper sauce…and a slab of nicely-grilled chicken…

…plus a sausage…

I don’t know why there was an American flag though…when it was obviously Ayamas, made in Malaysia – the ones with cheese inside.

My missus had the chicken mushroom mozarella melt (RM8.20)…

…and there can be no denying that they’re really very generous with the meat.

Both of us enjoyed what we had and at those prices, we certainly had no complaints…other than the fact that they do not speak English there despite being a western food joint but anyway, they do not speak Japanese at those Japanese places either, do they?

  1. LOL….
d sausage looks so pale ..
I was laffing so hard when i c d US flag on the sausage…..
looks like d american had conquer the sausage… LOL
Yesterday I had a grill chicken chop n it cost me RM11…
    RM8.20 is cheap ….

Mixed grill at a not-a-5-star hotel cafe here, RM18…and the meat is getting smaller and smaller. This is cheap, generous and I loved it – even though I’m not really a fan of black pepper sauce.

  2. the first thing I noticed was the sausage which really stood out! πŸ˜›

I’m surprised by the price though.. rm12.90 for mixed grill? That’s pretty reasonable for so much meat!

Sausage standing…so much meat… Hmmmm….what are you talking about, Isaac? Muahahahahaha!!!! πŸ˜€

  3. when you said they served american breakfast I was thinking if their scrambled egg would satisfied you! but you didn’t order that! haha anyway mixed grilled seems to be pretty good! chicken beef and lamb! lol quite a heavy one though! hmmm well i do think that atleast they should know either english or malay. nowadays a lot of foreign labor that doesnt speak well! had a hard time ordering too! =(

Not in Sibu…and they’re not foreign workers. There’s this predominant Speak-Mandarin culture…so most are Mandarin speaking and cannot speak a word of English nor the Chinese dialects. But I’m getting better, can struggle a bit and get what I want understood. Hope to go back there one of these days to try their breakfast. πŸ˜‰

  4. Wow! At those prices, I would definitely go there if I were in Sibu.

Come, come! Any plans to come over to Sibu, doc. Stay at my house – free lodgin, free airport transfers, free tours, free food…and ang pao, if you bring your baby – 1st time visiting, Chinese tradition. LOL!!!

  5. Wah… so cheap! Definitely would be my regular lurk if there’s a branch in KL.

Dunno the shops but there are stalls selling western food at hawkers centres – very cheap. Nice or not, that’s another story lah. πŸ˜‰

  6. As the saying goes…never judge a book by its cover. The mixed grill looks heavenly but a bit too oily….and boy!!!!…..they are so generous with the meat for both dishes. Worth the price you pay.

Not oily when I ate, maybe it was the black pepper sauce. Only thing is I prefer mushroom or brown gravy… 😦 Still, at those prices, I really can’t complain…and it was nice.

  7. The food portion sure look big to me. yaloh, why the flag??? Maybe they are trying to emphasize it is an American dish?

Dunno. Gimmick perhaps… See! It’s getting all the attention… πŸ˜‰

  8. I love this place. It’s so cheap. Would definitely go back there again. The only problem with this place is the ambience.

Yup…no air con and those wooden chairs aren’t exactly comfortable. LOL!!!

  9. Your mixed grill looks good! English is an international language, they should have waiter/waitresses who can at least converse in simple English..

Tell that to the cafe and restaurant owners here…but this one, no choice…I think. Looks like a father and son business – the son waits at the table, the father collects the money…dunno who’s doing the cooking at the back. πŸ˜‰

  10. It’s cheap…I wonder if they can survive or not. The Eat All You Want Steamboat that I have blogged about last year had closed down lo. Guess the cost is too high

Business seems pretty good. Low overheads, probably will last for some time at least…

  11. Two days ago I took my kids for a set lunch.. drinks, soup, dessert plus main meal.. all in RM11.90! Cheap? I think it is very reasonable, no wonder it was crowded during lunch hour..
As for this Anson, I also agree it is cheap… just look at your mixed grill… all for RM12.90 only!

This one’s ok, business good but not crowded. Maybe many people don’t know about it yet…

  12. Anson? Hahhahahha…my nephew’s name Anson too. Must tease him, when he open a restaurant which i don’t know.

Food look not bad, before i scroll down, i thought you’re ordering American breakfast, when you said they serve American breakfast.

Your mix grill look good, and big portion too, but but..that “pale” sausage spoilt the whole picture. Lucy’s chicken mushroom mozarella melt look good too. Yum !

All’s good…even the sausage. LOL!!! Sometimes I would buy at the supermart and fry myself for breakfast… Will go there and try the breakfast one of these days. πŸ˜‰ Yup… I remember Anson, big boy now.

  13. A simple place with good food. For that price, who can complain?

Yup! Precisely! But no cute pretty waitress like the one at Maple Leaf? πŸ˜‰ Muahahahahaha!!!!

  14. Wah, My Quay Lo’s kind of food. So cheap some more. If they have a branch in KL, we probably will be there every weekend πŸ˜€

My missus and I will definitely drop by again… πŸ˜‰

  15. wah!!! really very generous portion and very meaty as well!! love that mixed grill, it doesn’t look messy at all like many other places, and the breadcrumbs chicken looks good too.. haha, american flag on an ayamas sausage – just like many who speak english with an intended fake american slang!! πŸ˜€

LOL!!! No worries, I’m not one of them. Not so pretentious… Yup, the food looks nice, tastes great and is cheap too… Worth going. πŸ˜‰

  16. It is very cheap although not so high class looking..hehehe.I wonder how can they survive with such huge portion!

No aircon, no need to pay electricity…no need to employ help, minimal/no decor…so all the money goes into the food. Good deal! That’s the way it should be. What’s the point of paying so much for all those things for not so great food?

  17. as long as the food is reasonably priced and tastes reasonably good, no air-con no decor is acceptable ya? πŸ˜€

    Yup…couldn’t agree more. πŸ˜‰

  18. Anson reminds me of the old name of Teluk Intan lol. but without aircond, these western dishes seem incomplete for me.

Latest: Aftermath of CNY; What do you think?

I certainly do not agree with you on this. For one thing, it is environment-friendly and will not aggravate the depletion of the ozone layer…and there’s another place here which is non-airconditioned and I would go there quite frequently. Why? The decor is very nice – simple stuff, ordinary flowers all tastefully used to create the mood and ambiance and the most important thing – the food is fantastic.,,and for someone like me, so fat, sweating plus-plus…to want and go and dine there is definitely something. The ceiling fans that they have are more than enough for me to feel comfortable. Well, those in western countries are not airconditioned, that’s for sure.

  19. the sausage looks pale. they should have at least give better quality sausages.

At those prices, I’m not complaining. These aren’t too bad – I like them a lot better than most of the other brands.

  20. Looking good. Where is tis?

In one of the shoplots to the left of Medan Mall, Sibu (Sarawak). Oh yeah! I forgot to mention this in the post, thanks. Are you from around here?

  21. I only recently tried out this place and had the mixed grill that you had. The serving was indeed very big for the price presenting excellent value for money. Everything was good except the beef. The beef was over-tenderized so losing the steak’s texture and flavor.

Getting more and more popular – they’ve extended to the other side now. I find it was better when they just started – that time when they opened in the mornings as well…plus these days, one would have to wait for a table and there is no prop[er queuing system – no, thank you. I would rather go elsewhere.
