This happens all the time. After a few days of eating all the delicious but rich and heavy foods like chicken curry…
…or these to-die-for assam prawns with pineapples…
…or this yummy masak hitam beef from Annie-Q‘s mum…
…I would start craving for something simpler and lighter.
So on the 4th Day of Chinese New Year, I got up early and cooked some plain porridge and fried some omelette to eat with it…
I added Bovril to the porridge though I do not mind having it plain or with Marmite…and I also had the fried peanut ikan bilis (anchovies) that I had mentioned in an earlier post with it.
I would have had other condiments as well but I did not plan on cooking it so I did not stock up on the usual suspects when it comes to Teochew porridge like salted eggs, century eggs, fried dace with black beans, preserved lettuce and so on…but no, I would not touch tau ju (fermented tofu). My missus loves it even though much has been said about it being detrimental to health.
Ummmm…that was good – simple but nice!
u dunno wat u are missing out… tauju is close to HEAVEN!
My missus will sokong 100%… 😦
Tauju=tauchu? Oooo… I love those…but not easy to find good ones. Some taste very pelik!
Don’t ask me. I never touch the stuff…
Tauju? yuck
Double yucks!!! 😦
The red fermented beancurd is nice.. in cantonese “foo yi” … i can eat that with plain porridge… ikan bilis, salted eggs, nuts… best!!
Hmmmm…looks like it is a favourite among women? LOL!!! 😀
I can eat it like tat
Oopsss!!!! I stand corrected! Not only women love tauju! Your missus doesn’t like either… 😉
i second that! Heaven!
Hah!!! Obviously! Another woman! 😉
AIks? Tauju not the brown thingie? U mean the red coloured thingie?
Yup! The red thing that looks like some rotten stuff… Muahahahahaha!!!! Many people love it, I know.
the red color thingie la cleff.
Yup!
Oh…that one…I dun really like that one. I tot ur talking about the brown beans that people usually cook with ayam. =.=
That’s tau cheo lah…
I agree with you, especially during CNY that we feast a lot, something simpler is indeed refreshing and freshen up ourselves (appetite too).. I can have plain porridge with just marmite and omelette (onions or preserved radish would be great) just like you, it’s indeed very yummy!! 😉
I love Marmite too…but my missus doesn’t, so we end up buying Bovril instead. Expensive, over RM20 a large bottle nowadays. 😦
I like fermented bean curd but I *love* century eggs.
Hey, it was great catching up with you today! 😀
…and I was having porridge again. this time with century eggs. Will post on that in a couple of days. Nice seeing you again, Huai Bin. Keep in touch.
This is exactly what I want for breakfast, lunch and dinner today!
LOL!!! I shared the photo on Facebook that day and Shereen ended cooking that for dinner – the whole works! 😉
Nooo…I don’t have salted eggs, preserved vege with pork belly, pickled radish etc.So, not proper Teochew porridge meal:)
That’s the problem when going for Teochew porridge – everything I want. In the end, not cheap wor… 😦
I though you would say.. after having all those heavy meals, the likelihood of falling sick would be high. It seems a lot of people are on MC today at my office. LOL! I am at work though, because did not eat enough good food! 😛
Glad you’re fine. Must be the good food you had. Those people, ular lah…stay home a bit longer – take mc, extra two days…or they played mahjong till late at night, not enough sleep…and no proper meals.
Yeah!!!…after all the oily & rich food, this is exactly what I have yesterday and today also. Plain porridge with preserved lettuce, tau ju & salted goes well….. Yummy!!!…yummy!!!…
You also tauju lover, I see… 😦
Tauju taste superb with porridge. There is this small black preserved crab which we called “muar kee” (in Hockkien), also goes well with porridge but seldom see them in market now.
I don’t eat that, never tried. My Bidayuh housemate way back then…when I was teaching in Kanowit – he loved that! He would buy and enjoy himself eating.
The red beancurd is nice to cook chap choy right? i love it though the not so good for heath claim lah. I dun fancy porridge. only take it when i’m seriously ill..
Gong Xi Fa Chai STP 🙂
Many people are like you. Me too before – would feel sick when eating porridge even though not sick…but ok now. Love it! I like the tauju used to marinate meat (pork ribs) and then roast in the oven…but not with porridge. Qong Xi Fa Cai to you too!
Tauju is my all time fav too, can’t do without it when “makan” porridge, hey here wishing all the best of health ya
So you gang with my missus… LOL!!!
Same here……
I eat Tin Kai (frog) prorridge on the 7th day ….
It taste good .. ….
can share the curry chicken recipe ..
it looks so lemak… eat with toast bread is “heavenly GOOD”
Eyewwwww…frogs! No, thank you. LOL!!! The curry chicken? Use A1 Mountain Globe curry paste – add your own finely-chopped Bombay onion, two or more stalks of lemon grass (serai), curry leaves and a small packet of the mixed spices (the kayu manis and what not – sold at grocery stores and mini-supermarts)…and add evaporated milk. We prefer this to santan – healthier and will not go bad so easily. Other curry paste, not so nice. Add chicken stock/Cukup Rasa/salt and msg according to taste.
Wow! I would love a taste of that assam prawns with pineapples! I agree that sometimes simple food satisfies our taste buds more after consuming so much rich food.
Yup…it’s only human nature, I guess. Too much of a good thing will make us yearn for the simple basics after a while…
i want some porridge too.maybe tonight! too much heavy food upset my stomach!…>•<
Oh? What have you been eating? Go ahead! Have some porridge – a refreshing change, really. 😉
I had porridge too for breakfast the other day at Berjaya Times Squares Hotel KL.
I love to eat porridge for breakfast, good for health & digestion 🙂
Happy CNY to you and family!
Same to you and yours. Ya, they usually have that at hotel buffet breakfast…and I will usually take it too. 🙂
AH!!! Porridge!!! I want!!! Since that day you posted in FB i am thinking till now! See today lunch, don’t know what to eat, till i see your post – porridge!! Argg!! I should have boiled that today for my lunch.
I love porridge, but not my three boys. I always like to go for teochew porridge with lots of those side small dish, very nice and yummy.
I like my porridge with Bovril too instead of marmite. And i don’t take tauju…eeeeeeeeee…
I had that at one of the shops opposite Low Yat – not bad. I love Teochew porridge where they have all the selections of condiments that I can choose… Can’t get this in Sibu. 😦 Ah!!!! You’re not like the rest of the ladies – all of them tauju lovers. 😉
Oh man… the chicken curry and the prawn… really lah menggugat nafsu. Fooh… Bovril!! havent had that since ages ago!
Must get the beef one. That’s the real thing… Otherwise, tastes like Marmite, more or less. Those two, my missus’ cooking… 😉
Love all the food you tayang here today as I know for sure that Lucy’s cooking is very very nice…especially her Foo Chow Ginger Chicken Mee Sua!!! Actually kan, many Chinese would cook porridge on the 7th day of CNY as it is the Birthday of every being in the world….although I wonder why porridge and not mee sua..lol!
As for the tauju, if I’m not mistaken, the red colour one is for cooking and the yellowish one is the correct one for eating porridge.A few ppl told me this including a Teochew Mui stall owner. So now I wonder after reading the comments here.
Oh? Coincidentally I cooked porridge on the 7th Day as well. Watch out for the post… Coming soon. 😉
Yes , u’re right Shereen , the eating one should be in yellowish colour . Cooking one will be in red colour .
I thought both the same? Both I will not touch! 😉
Thanks for the info,Annie. Now I know for sure;))
Red kah, yellow kah, green kah, blue kah…whatever colour, all I will not want. Hehehehehe!!!! 😀
Think no need to wait until 4th day of CNY, on 2nd day itself already 26 *jelak* with all the meat would start to hunt for curry mee. Porridge without tauju is like coffee without sugar to Bananaz lah. No tauju no porridge haha. Why tauju is detrimental to health?
Heard it’s cancer-causing. Ohhhh!!!! All the ladies like, you also like lah!!! 😉 LOL!!!
All the good heavy food for CNY. cooked porridge when I was back home…….ate with kiam chye…yum!
Looks like everybody’s doing what I did. LOL!!! 😉
But it’s still fattening with all the cholesterol from omelette, peanuts and anchovies!
Nothing to do with being less fattening – just more refreshing, easier to eat and what not.
curry chicken! asam prawn! gosh! those are so nice to go with rice!
anyway, egg not too good for health too! especially egg yolk!
Last I heard, it’s ok to have both yolk and white. There is supposed to be a balance in that – one’s no good without the other. 😉
