This post is long overdue but lots of things have been happening lately so I have to stick to the chronological sequence, more or less. I guess many would already know that my birthday fell on the 2nd of December last week – my 59th…or my 60th, if we follow the Chinese calendar.
Of course, the very first thing in the morning, we had the traditional Foochow longevity noodles or mee sua (string/thread noodles) in chicken soup cooked with the traditional Foochow ang chiew (red wine)…
…and for dessert, we had the chocolate cake…
*Melissa’s photo*
…that my sister got for me from this bakery…

It was very nice and I certainly would not mind going back there to buy again should anybody be celebrating his or her birthday. I hear the Oreo cake is very nice too. Hmmm…decisions, decisions!!!
In fact, a few days earlier, my friend, Lim, bought me these from that franchise cake shop in town – the chocolate walnut cake…
…and the durian cheese cake…
Both were nice, of course…but I would think twice about buying cakes from there as they do not come cheap. Ok…ok..I’m el-cheapo all right but as the English proverb goes, “Take care of your pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.”
For the dinner the evening of that same day, my missus bought me a cake from Marcus, the very popular guy in town who has a home-based cake-making business and his cakes are simply out of this world…

Yes, we went out for dinner that night…
…but that will have to wait till the next post.
Stay tuned!…
There’s nothin’ behind me and nothin’ that ties me
To somethin’ that might have been true yesterday
Tomorrow is open; right now it seems to be more
Than enough to just be here today
And I don’t know what the future is holdin’ in store
I don’t know where I’m goin’, I’m not sure where I’ve been
There’s a spirit that guides me, a light that shines for me
My life is worth the livin’, I don’t need to see the end
Sweet, sweet surrender
Live, live without care
Like a fish in the water
Like a bird in the air…

Happy Belated Birthday STP! I guess it’s the 1st time I see your missus here 🙂 Very nice family pic 🙂 BTW, my birthday is coming real soon…
Oh? She’s been in photos in a few past posts – you have not been dropping by regularly. You’re a December baby too? Thanks for the belated greetings and Happy Birthday to you in advance.
Will be eating cakes for the whole week haha. Yummy!
Not really. Give a bit to this fella, a bit to that fella…very fast, all gone. 😉
Very very cham……. this post makes me drooooooooooooooooooooo!!!….Wow!…so many cakes for your birthday, and the mee sua something to die for. Slurppppppppppp.
Cakes, Kuching has…even nicer ones, I’m sure…and mee sua also. No problem, go and have some. Hehehehehehe!!!! 😉
getting very busy lately STP? enjoy life! with family and friends. Live life to the fullest ya, with food and love 😉
Ok, not really busy. Sure, must make the most of anytime available for me to do my own things. 😉
Lucy made that mee sua?…yum!!! Can still terasa the gingerish taste and her very nice fall apart chicken ( wah, my saliva macam on overdrive now!!).The cake…mmmm…not so impressive la as sejak I can make my own cakes, every shop bought ones fall short.Maybe the ingredients used..not that I terror buat cake, okay:)
Hah!!! You did not have the chance to try our cakes as you were here only for a couple of days – once tried, sure you would want again and again and again. I never liked the cakes overseas – not nice, too sweet…
*sedih* my cakes always turn either keras macam batu, or lembik macam ****dot dot dot* tak pandai ikut recipe.
I don’t bake. My missus can make very nice cakes…and I also know where to get the best cakes in town… 😉
Psst..I really like your family photo tu..Lucy look so glamorous and you pun boleh tahan handsome jugak. Most importantly you both don’t look your age:)
Of course lah! Live in stress-free small town, so relaxed…can stay looking young. Not like people in the city… Hehehehehe!!!!
Yes, yes… looks really great, macam in their 30s, no?And no, not bodek-ing for pressie, but really looks young! Initially I tot Cikgu’s wife is a friend or something… this morning pakai phone when see this post… really din realize it’s Cikgu’s missus.
Itu lah… Get an iPad, can see big big! LOL!!!
Mee sua with chocolate cake? That sounds like an odd couple. Nice pic of the family!
Thanks. Yup…that certainly was a strange combination…but we wanted to cut it quickly and then distribute it around. Couldn’t wait for afternoon tea…as we wanted to save tummy space for dinner…and there was another cake! Perhaps next year I should send out a gift list…so not everybody will give me cakes… 😉
Such a beautiful photo too…i mean the family photo la. 🙂
A bit blur… My BIL took it…but ya, it was nice.
Okay mah…a bit of photo editing will make the blurr not so noticeable. Maybe make it black and white?
Never mind. Sometimes, blur a bit – can make it look nicer. LOL!!!
My mom like spazz out after she saw the mee sua pic.LOL. Btw, could you share the recipe because my mom wants it really BADLY. teehee (my mom’s a foochow but she can’t cook a decent mee sua…ssshhhhh. rofl) 😀
Try this version: https://suituapui.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/let-me-show-you-the-way/
If you can get hold of very good traditional Foochow red wine – you can marinate the meat with the wine prior to cooking (and pour in everything when adding the chicken) or if anybody does not take alcohol, each individual can add their own one or two spoonfuls when eating. Also nice, if adding brandy…
The bare minimum would be cooking oil, ginger and chicken…and salt and msg according to taste. Using sesame oil would make it more fragrant and also adding the shitake mushroom and the red seeds, but these are all optional.
Thanks! 🙂
Welcome. Hope that helps… 😉
A wonderful birthday for a wonderful person! LOVE LOVE LOVE the picture of you and your family. I see Melissa takes good pictures. Is that a poem or the lyrics of a song? So true!
Thanks, thanks for your kind words. Yup, Melissa’s got a better camera…and now I’ve got one too. Hehehehehehehe!!! Looking forward to better pictures in the posts to come… The lines are extracted from the song, “Sweet Surrender” by John Denver…
Really lots of sweet stuffs … Anyway, once a while ok la…
…and give to people here and there so in the end, did not really eat that much. 😉
the foochow mee sua looks so good. i had, for the first time, foo chow food in kuching last week. i can’t remember the names of the few types of noodles we had but they were all delicious, esp the one with slightly tangy soup and has salted veggie in it.
That’s chao chai hung ngang, chao chai being the preserved veg and hung ngang is the big version of the mihun. You were in Kuching last week? Hope you had a great time there and enjoyed all the nice food around. Btw, your first time here, I see…so a warm welcome to you and do drop by again. Will link you in my blogroll.
Yes, foochow mee suah with foochow red wine is a must on the birthday!! Yum!! The more wine the better..slurp slurp.
The cake that your sister get you good? Hmmmm…maybe next time can ask for your help. kekekekkeek…
Again, sweet and beautiful family picture. Mrs. Wee look younger and younger lei.
The cake was very nice but I hear their Oreo would be much nicer. Will buy and try one of these days… No problem, anytime you want, just let me know and I’ll go and get for you.
