Moment of truth…

It was 1986 and I was doing a one-year in-service specialist course at the Language Institute at Lembah Pantai, KL, now called IBA (Institut Bahasa Antarabangsa) when my missus took leave from work and flew over to join me and we went on a holiday together at this place

LakeToba 1

I remember we joined a MAS Golden Holidays package which cost around RM500 per person only, inclusive of air fare, ground transfers and tours, hotel and meals. It certainly was very cheap…and we did not spend much. I think I brought over another RM500 and came home with most of it.

LakeToba2

Perhaps things have changed by now but there wasn’t much to shop at the time. My missus bought a few very nice batek dresses but at first wash, the colours ran so it really was not worth it at all. Other than a few odds and ends here and there, I don’t think we bought much else.

It was a very nice, relaxing holiday though. The place was cool and peaceful…

LakeToba3

…and all in all, we had a great time. So where was this place? The answer is: Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia…and the specific place where we had the horse ride was Berastagi or Brastagi.

We have two winners who gave the most specific correct answer: Gratitude and Claire…and I have decided to send prizes to both of them instead of picking one by lucky draw. So if you two will give me your mailing addresses via the inbox on Facebook, the postman will be on his way to you soon. Congratulations.

To the rest, thanks for your participation…and hang around! Who knows I may hold another competition soon? In the meantime, if anybody is interested in going to Lake Toba, you can click on this link and see the many photographs taken during a tour of the place.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Cheers!

Ooi!!! What trip to Lake Toba? What ticket? If it had been a sweet young thing who won…and I could get to tag along, maybe lah!!! Muahahahahaha!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Indon… patutlah i dono. >.< I never go holidays overseas…oh, well, at least I was right… wakakaka… it's definitely not Taman Tasik Titiwangsa! Wakakakaka!

Oh…you were talking about the lake, not the mountain range. The lake there that time (1986) – there was a Thai seafood restaurant – Nelayan. No longer there, I guess…

    1. No, no… the Thai seafood restaurant is still there in Titiwangsa. Well, as of May 2011. Wakakaa… so I guess it is still there.

Oh? Then it has been there for a long, long time… The food was good, very nice…dunno now.

  3. I showed your blog post to Myra and I guessed the place to be in Indonesia as I recalled mum mentioning that you guys went there for a holiday before. So do I qualify for a prize as well? LOL! Congrats to the winners ๐Ÿ™‚

Nope, too late… Have to be fair one, no favouritism. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Cakap aje… when she go back home, you’ll spoil her kao kao no doubt… takde favouritism konon… yalorr… no favouritism… sayang onli. *ROFLOL*

Yes, yes…can even bring her there on holiday…but no, not favouritism. Just sayang… Hehehehehe!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Yay! Such a pleasant surprise this morning. Haven’t won anything in a long while so this is really cool! ๐Ÿ™‚
    Thank you!
    +Ant+

Congrats. Don’t forget to give me your address…

  5. wow..what a nice surprise to see my name Claire in this post!! hahaha.. never really won anything before..er.. oh, i think got.. one tshirt last time from foongpc.. hahaha.. blogging is so nice.. got prize some more..
I have been to Medan once during the 1990s… took us to Lake Toba and I remember the horse carriage though I didnt sit on it…
Thanks for the prize, STP.. whatever it is.. hahahaa…

Will just have to wait and see. Send me your address… Actually, you can just text me – you have my hp number, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I emailed to you already yesterday… ๐Ÿ™‚

Yup…but I don not have your full name. Later, postman wants to check MyKad, not the same name how? LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Congratulation to Anthony and Claire, happy 4 them too! True enough, I hv nvr been to tht place, lol!

Can go. Nice – very cook and peaceful and relaxing. Medan’s not nice…and the bus ride to the lake and back is very very long… Air Aisa flies there, it seems…so now, can get really cheap fares.

  7. Congrats to both winners !

I’ve never been to Lake Toba and I heard it was very famous during the 80’s. I went to Bali about 6 years ago and I think that place is terribly hot and quite boring. But many seems to like Bali alot. Food was lousy too….i think our M’sian malay food is very much better!

I guess it was because it was the cheapest holiday destination then. Bali is more for young people who love clubbing and beach activities and some sexcitement perhaps. Lake Toba is for those who love relaxing holidays – nice and cool and peaceful and nothing much to do – that’s what I like!

  8. haha, really have no idea where the place is until you revealed the answer.. i think it’s nice place to go, serene and peaceful, but not RM500 inclusive of everything now, probably RM1000, haha..

Dunno how much now…but you can grab a cheap fare from Air Asia…and join a local ground tour – like the people in the link. Should be affordable that way.

  9. Cheers!!!..hooray!!..horray!!!..to both the winners!!!. I thought both of them have to fly all the way to Sibu to claim their prizes, hehehe!!….

    Ya…that would be a great idea eh? Don’t come…no prize. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. that’s nice..I must go lake Toba one day!

Go! I had a great time there! Just didn’t like Medan…and the journey to and fro was long but it was all right, quite enjoyable….

  11. Grats to the winners…wohooo!!!

Never knew this place is so beautiful….

Very nice, very beautiful…and the island in Lake Toba, Samosir…is bigger than Singapore!

  12. Lake Toba fleeted across my mind….but I was distracted by how your handb..sorry, travelling bag suited you and so I forgot to mention Lake Toba. It’s the thought that counts (coz I thought of Lake Toba) mah! I can get consolation prize, no?? Postage to Perth shouldn’t be too costly ๐Ÿ™‚

I was in Woolworths yesterday to get a pack of Walkers (Home Recipe) Melt in the Mouth shortbread fingers and remembered your love for it too!! If I had a private jet, would have flown a couple of boxes to you ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great weekend.

In your own words, “postage to Perth shouldn’t be too costly”. I’ve never tried Walkers (Home Recipe) Melt in the Mouth shortbread fingers…just ordinary Scottish shortbread, Walkers brand…and even that, people gave one. Too expensive, can’t afford to buy myself. Aha!!! Now I will be waiting eagerly for the postman – dunno how long it will take to arrive… Hint! Hint! Muahahahahahaha!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

P.S. Adoi!!! Did not even mention anything close to the right answer, want to claim consolation prize? Hebatnya!!! Muahahahaha!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I’m working on it ! No need to hint hint coz, see, when I buy shortbreads, also remember that you like (from reading your blogs) them. They are probably available in NZ as well and they cost A$3.98 (200g) here. If you have relatives or friends returning to Sibu for a holiday, you let me know and I can tumpang some goodies over to you. Perhaps you would like to bring your missus over here for a holiday soon? We go makan and minum, OK?

Can’t get away right now due to “family commitments”. Otherwise, I would love to hop over to Perth – the nearest and cheapest ang moh place… LOL!!!

  13. wah STP, you were so slim!!! maybe you should revisit Toba and share the moments with your dear wide again. It’ll be nice.

No lah…been there already. Would rather go some place that I have not been… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. I like that guy squatting next to you guys in the first pic. Looks like he’s texting or something. But nice to see these pics. Maybe you should post some of you in your bell bottoms.

Hah!!! 1986…where got hp? LOL!!! ATUR perhaps…and not everyone had that. No lah…these things, must feature in small doses… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. You look quite slim in those pictures.

Hey I was right what! Indonesia mah! Mana tau Berastagi, Lake Toba, never been there before leh.

A bit bigger already…after getting married. Hehehehehehe!!!! Well, I did say the most specific answers, so rules are rules. Must be fair. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. Wow! I’m loving these posts! Keep ’em coming.

It’s always nice to hear about the story behind the blogger! ๐Ÿ˜€

Glad that you like it. Should be ok in small doses… Don’t want to bore everybody to death. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. Hmmm, can tell u have the potential of a big belly in ur younger days already XD

Ouch!!! Blame it on marriage – that spelled doom… LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  18. Sounds like a nice vacation ๐Ÿ™‚ I wonder what will the prizes be. You are saving it for the next post, I assume? Haha

Nope. I will just send to them and hope that they will blog about it when they receive it… In the meantime, let it remain a mystery. Hehehehehe! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. LOL so mysterious. I guess I have to check their blogs for updates on this. Congratulations to the two winners!

Hahahahaha!!!! Don’t you like suspense? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. Congrats to Gratitude & Claire!!

Lake Toba, i never been to that’s why i didnt get the answer correct. LOL!

Wah, you look so young and slim that time.

It’s nice – loved it! I loved Baguio in the Philippines too… Nice, cool places. Ya…married already then and was “growing” slowly but surely. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  20. Congratulations to Claire and Gratitude ๐Ÿ™‚

I never been to Medan yet. Been to Jakarta oni

Bandung would he nice. I like hill resorts – nice and cool… Don’t think I would like Jakarta – so busy. My head would go spinning… ;(

  21. 4’ish now…almost the weekend !!! Your friends like to kacau you “so slim then”, “so young then”, “wah so handsome then”. Kesian leh, poor STP ๐Ÿ™‚ . Thank you for sharing with us your photos. I don’t think many would be ‘brave’ enough to share their younger day photos in case kena all those comments, heh heh!! You’re a legend, STP ! ๐Ÿ™‚

No lah! Reality…can’t run away from that…and I’m ok with it. For one thing, I think I look pretty ok for somebody who will be 60 next year. What do you think? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. 10 out of 10 !! I’m sure your wife and daughter will agree that you have the X-Factor! ๐Ÿ˜€
Enjoy your weekend and be good!

You too…if you can, be good…that is. Muahahahahaha!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  22. aww, i didnt win, stomps feet. Lol!! ๐Ÿ™‚ My day is coming up so soon, XD

you look good in your younger days. dashing young man ๐Ÿ˜›

Yes, it’s this Sunday, right? Or is it Saturday? Of course I looked dashing, but unfortunately, time has not been kind to me… Sobssss!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ LOL!!!๐Ÿ˜€

  23. You permed your hair those days?..boleh tahan ah..vain jugak..hahaha.
Aisey..if only I did not go to Sydney..if only I have brought my laptop instead of my ipad, sure I strike one…as I’ve been to the same exact place and taken the same shots with the kereta kuda.Did you do the dip kat the kolam yang ada sulphur tu?Not bad what Lake Toba..I would like to bring my son there one day.Oh..did you buy the kek lapis and kek sarang semut there.Very famous then and I think I bought more than 10 boxes to give my family and friends.Very nice then but now tak tau lar.

My hair? Hmmmm….long story. LOL!!! Now also curly…but I never perm anymore – the older I get, the more curly it becomes. Dunno why. Got kolam there kah? Like Rotorua? No, thank you…bau kencing….and the mud pools like last time our tahi in the bucket latrines. Muahahahahaha!!!!! That time, never heard of the cakes….I Now it seems they’re very popular – people would go and buy berkotak-kotak back.

  24. Wow thanks to all who sent their congratulatory words to Claire and I. Arthur was correct. The Medan/Lake Toba/Berastagi tour organized by Reliance was probably the best deal then. Air travel was by Transmile Air.(Now defunct) It was 5 star accommodation since the hotels were owned by the boss of the local tour operator. Berastagi is a hill town with lush greenery due to the volcanic soil. Had the best durian there, and everything was so cheap. Romantic place, but I didn’t experience it since it was a uni holiday break with a friend.

Thanks again Art! You’ve made my weekend ๐Ÿ˜‰
    +Ant+

Glad it makes you so very happy. Oh? You went with Reliance? We went with MAS Golden Holidays – also good…nice hotels, nice food, nice place… Hmmmm…what friend you went with? Not romantic one kah? Haiyor…sayang! LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  25. i was four when you went to this place…haha! ๐Ÿ™‚ the pic really looks so 80s ๐Ÿ™‚

So you’re 29 now? Still single? Clock is ticking… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. i guessed this place too! since i havent been there so couldnt state it out so specifically. and rm500 inclusive of tours, accommodations and flight tix were sooooooooo freakin cheap!

both of u really looked thinner back then! haha,

Ya…I wonder how much an all-inclusive tour like that would cost now. That was 25 years ago – with the inflation and all, I don’t think it is this cheap anymore. Ya…and that was 25 years ago…and I’ve grown since then. Muahahahahaha!!!!

  27. Congrats to the two winners! Hey, cikgu, no consolation prize to console those who didn’t get the specific place, meh? boohoohoo..
Wow, 1986…still in school, lah. I went to Lake Toba in 1997, it was a company trip. So much fun!

Lucky you! An all paid-for trip! Nope, no prize. As the English proverb goes, “A miss is as good as a mile!” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  28. Congrats to Gratitude & Claire. I have been to Lake Toba but never go horse riding there. I went there on a Company’s trip too.

Gosh!!! Another one so lucky! It seems that the employees these days offer their loyal employees very lucrative rewards. I heard one restaurant here took their workers to KL on a holiday, and a hair salon to HongKong. Sigh!!! No such things for teachers unfortunately… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. wow… so many congratulatory wishes! Paiseh paiseh.. hahaha… must post up the prize then!! They would love to know.. me too… *rubbing hands*

Pressure! Pressure! Now I have to go and get something nice… Otherwise, later people see, so malu. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  29. am off to medan next friday… wanna follow me?

No, thank you. The two of us together there at the same time, sure the island tenggelam nanti. Muahahahahaha!!!!!

  30. Good morning, STP!! I just had a look at your old post “Faithfully” – hahahaaaaa!! what a great start to my Monday morning. You are one serious hoarder!! The ‘Bag Man’ of Sibu, yah??!

Hahahahaha!!! I still have it and still carry it around wherever I go. I wonder what Shereen will think of that… ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I’ve got to let my hubby read this “Faithfully” post and you know what? He will love ya to pieces! Coz I’m always nagging him to chuck things out, now he’ll be able to look at me in the eye and say “see…others hoard paper bags”!!! Say, if you were to take the paper bags to an antique shop in KL, they may pay good money. You could be hoarding million $$ and not know it!

      Save the environment! LOL!!!
