Half as much…

Now THIS is another reason why you should come and visit Sibu – you can stay in a hotel…

Medan Hotel Sibu

…that may not look very impressive on the outside…

Medan Hotel entrance

…but it is pleasant enough…

Medan Hotel reception

…and clean, plus it is really very cheap!

Medan Hotel room rates

A room with a queen-size bed is only RM65 a night and this one with a king-size bed…

Medan Hotel room

…is, believe it or not, just RM70. When I stayed at the cheap/cheaper hotel in Penang, it was RM135 a night and the room was not even half as nice…nor was the washroom…

Medan Hotel washroom

You have the usual coffee/tea making facilities…

Medan Hotel coffee & tea making facilities

…and there is this flat-screen plasma tv with your favourite channels…

Medan Hotel flat screen plasma tv

A triple room with a big bed and a single is RM85 and for two big beds, you only need to pay RM90…compared to RM180 for a triple room at that hotel in Penang…and it is definitely a whole lot better than this one or this one in Sungai Petani…or even this one in KL.

The only thing is that ย it is not in the town centre (5-10 minutes away, Sibu being a pretty small town) and neither is the one in Pennag but if you’re staying at this one, you will have at least a dozen coffee shops and half a dozen restaurants like this one or this one or this one within walking distance…a supermarket, convenience stores and bakeries all in that same area…and Boston and Secret Recipe are just around the corner.

So what are you waiting for? Come! Come! Sibu welcomes you…

  1. WAAH…Sibu got hotel wan-ah?!! The first picture kind of put me off. But the room and price is good. What else can you do in Sibu besides eat and stay in this hotel? Any great sight seeing to do?

Of course there is. What did you expect? And don’t tell me you thought we lived in the trees or I would block you for good.

This is many many times better than many hotels where I’ve stayed in KL and elsewhere…and at this price there, you’d probably end up staying in some cubicle in some dump.

You want to go sightseeing? I can’t remember the last time I went sightseeing anywhere… To me, holiday = eat and sleep and enjoy with friends. You can check out the blogs of those bloggers who came on the Firefly promo to see the things they did. Too bad you’re not their “friend’ on Facebook. Lots of photos there…

P.S. There are of course the 3-star to 5-star hotels here, also cheaper than over there and just as nice – around RM100-200 for a standard room, not a problem…

  2. Is that you standing at the reception ? What are you doing checking into a hotel in Sibu? Lol!

Nope…not me. If only I were that slim! Muahahahaha!!!! Why? Come back tomorrow and see – will be revealed in tomorrow’s post. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Nice room n clean n cheap too!wont ‘kalah’ to some of the 5 stars hotel in KL.

Definitely! Pollie stayed there one Chinese New Year when it first opened…and she met the towkay who kindly took care of the bill – so lucky, stayed there FOC. LOL!!!

  4. Not bad !!! I stay here next time la, and u bring me for makan healthy food!

Ok…we go out and eat pork leg – you eat the lean, I eat the fat. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  5. LOL, promoting sibu! That’s a very clean and spacious hotel room!

Very! You should see some of the hotels over there – the room as big as the double bed, no wardrobe – just hooks on the wall…and the toilet as big as the toilet bowl (and flush system) and you have to shower sitting on the toilet bowl! The worse thing is they’re not cheap! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. Then I should really bookmark ths place, lol!

Just let me know, I can go and make the reservations anytime. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Did you stay there or did you get their permission to take pictures? They should appoint you Sibu ambassador. Hehehe.

Come back tomorrow to see the post…for your answer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. wow the rates are really affordable and it looks decent enough to stay. good recommendation.

If this is in another town, I definitely would want to stay there – no second thoughts. Nice…and cheap!

  8. Medan in Sibu? mmmmmmmmmm by the way, my only reason to go to Sibu will be none other than STP……forget about the Hotel, putting over in your house courtyard will be better, got kampua mee, and more delights kan?

Share a secret with you, actually i am half Medanese, my gandmother was Medanese Malay and now why you know i am so blacky kekekekekk

Oh? Thought you’re so dark cos you’re so macho…sportsman, always playing sports and games outside. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ Well, I’m no Snow White myself…not siao pai thu’ (Little white rabbit). You come with your family, can stay at my house, no problem at all…..but if whole rombongan coming, then have to look for alternatives – my house small one only.

  9. Great!!! Very nice and clean!! even cheaper than Ipoh hotels anytime!! OK, I like.. the king size bed is cukup for me and my kids… if not enough, add an extra bed! hahaha… but if i go with AA, sure cukup liow.. *wink*

Yalor…so cheap, everything cheap…why spend a fortune to go on holiday abroad…when the BEST is right here! You and your kids coming…stay at my house – free! Even better! When? >.<

    1. I read all the comments here… so you are having guests this month, October.. and perhaps December (the fairy!)…. pretty busy, huh… mine will have to wait till my girl finishes her “PHD” before I can venture out… so probably will be January 2012 onwards!! hahahaa…. not to worry, hotel is fine with us.. cheap ma… dont want to trouble u in the house… i m a noisy snorer!! hahahaa….

You have not heard me yet! Muahahahahahaha!!!! You’d probably move out the very next day, scared off by my snoring! ๐Ÿ˜€ Come, just come…not need to worry about place to stay – all will be fine.

P.S. You remember that very young and very handsome blogger I met in Ipoh – Ivan. He says he’s coming for the weekend -23rd this month to 25th. Looking forward to that!

      1. Yes, I remember him.. Ivan, right??? hehehe… short memory I have but certain things I can remember one! hehehe….
Cleff, bawa anaks? Which one more priority? must have right timing also, right, Cikgu?

Hope all goes well and he’ll be here. Will surely post on what we do and eat… ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hmmmmm….end of year would be nice timing. Come, come for Christmas…LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. A subtle approach in letting me know I won’t be staying in your guest bedroom?…lol. Anyway, WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN A HOTEL ROOM…IN SIBU? Hah, pecah tembelang!!!!

Wah! So suspicious! LOL!!! Well, you’ll find out tomorrow. No lah…you come, three persons only – no problem…can fit into my small house even though I take up so much space. Muahahahahaha!!!!!

    1. ROFLOL!!! Mebbe ur rite la, Shereen…. wakakakakakakakkakak… telling u ah…hey, hotel here cheap cheap oni ah… wakakakaka! Hah! Cikgu, pecah ur tembelang liao! Wakakaka!

No comment. Just wait and see… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. tempting tempting kekkeke

Come! Come! When?…But if you, kucing and papa only…can stay at my house, no need to stay hotel… Hopefully bed can tahan papa so big. Muahahahaha!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Go December lah Kat… den u can do Xmas at Sibu documentary! LOL!

Oh! I forgot… I think air tickets during school holidays are very expensive…but I saw Firefly RM29 (all inclusive)…dunno if the offer is still on or not. That’s cheap!

  12. Look extremely cozy and good price! Definitely will have to contact you to get me a better price since you promoted them now :P. (got commission right?)

But hor… got hantu or not T^T?

No commission, just sharing. Anything that’s good deserves to be shared with friends mah. Not that I’ve heard of… It’s quite now…so it’s pretty safe. I’ve heard stories of some bigger and more expensive ones in town…and those in other towns in the country too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. Wow, this is value for money! Definetely cheaper, nicer and cleaner than most hotels of the same star rating in Penang or KL. The room looks new..is it a new hotel or recently refurbished? Btw, why you so hard sell Sibu in your recent posts? Calling so many people to go to Sibu? ๐Ÿ™‚

True… The only thing is it is not carpeted (not that those “cheaper” hotels where I stayed have)…and carpets get smelly after a few years. It’s over two years old, I think…coming to three and when I dropped by the other day, I was pleased to note that it has been very well-maintained – as good as new. Many hotels after one or two years…so run down already. Promote Sibu? Nice place, nice food, nice people (like me) – can’t understand why people would want to pay through their noses to go overseas…and it’s not necessarily nicer.

  14. LOL… Cikgu, dun be surprised if someone actually goes to Sibu to kacau u this coming Dec.

December? I should be around… Melissa should be home by then… You’re coming? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ve somebody coming this 23rd weekend…and somebody else early October…so December would be fine. If too many coming at one go, very hard to layan everybody 100%…later complain, I’m not hospitable… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. LOL… that would be telling… kakakaka… keeping my finger crossed for end of year things. Will let you know if I manage to budget and stuff. Wouldn’t wanna confirm til betul betul can confirm that I can visit ppl. LOL… you know lah… sometimes, things tend to come up at the last minute. Sometimes the other half got business to attend to and had to cancel plans… and den there’s in laws and what not. Tsk. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

The other half, just leave behind lah…anak just ask in-laws jaga. That would really be a welcome break. Muahahahaha!!!!

  15. Unbelievable! So cheap, clean and some more got flat screen plasma tv. Will plan a trip there and hope you help me book this hotel. Btw, are u one of the shareholder cos promoting in yr blog, LOL!

Nope… If only I were that rich! I just thought it is sooooo cheap for a place this nice, so must share with everybody lor.

  16. The Medan Hotel have the Kingwood Hotel Mukah feel. I stayed at Kingwood Hotel Mukah once during the time I moved out from quarter in Mukah last year.
Medan Hotel, looks good and nice.

it has no connection whatsoever with Kingwood. It’s owned by the people of Li Hua Hotel, Sibu (Hock Peng Realty)…and I think they have another hotel in Betong. I’m sure Kingwood Mukah is a lot nicer…and of course, a lot more expensive – after all, it’s a resort.

  17. Do you get paid to advertise this hotel?
Hahaha. Medan? Sounds like the owner is Indonesia noh?

Unfortunately, I’m not getting a single sen… Dunno why it’s named Medan – I’ve been there en route to Danau Toba/Samosir. Loved the peace and quiet…and the cool weather there.

  18. Me trying to book the fireflyz promo….but still havent found the best rate….i am coming…i am coming….ahahah..if i manage to get the promo rate.**hint hint**got free coach transfer? LOL!!

Just let me know the dates. Will meet you at airport…take you around to interesting places and to eat…eat…eat… No problem at all.

    1. Ling, bila going? Alone kah? If alone I tag along ahhh… but I can only do so end of year… and also, cannot get good rate. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

End of year, holiday time…air ticket expensive! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  19. Wah! You’re getting famous in Sibu, now everyone want to you to promote their “premises ” or food in your blog.

I think i know why you are at the hotel. There were some visitors on firefly that on visit Sibu trip?

Where is Medan hotel? Near Kampung Nangka? Near the mosque there?

Nope…Sibu bus terminal. Rasa Sayang – the best kampua in Sibu is in the blocks right behind the hotel. No lah…the Firefly people stayed at RH Hotel – where got stay at cheap hotel like this. No lah…helping to promote hotel, not asked by anybody lah – just sharing with friends.

  20. I am not picky and choosy when it comes to hotel…during my penang stay oso I din stay in hotel. Instead, i stayed at a backpacker’s guest house… no tv, but it’s very clean, very friendly ppl and very reasonable price too. In some ways, much, much better than a 5 star hotel. LOL… as long as got hot water and air cond… tarak TV nvm. It’s just a place to sleep… i rayau alot wan.

I never switch on the tv in hotels…usually lousy local channels…or those China ones. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Yup…as long as it is clean, no smell…aircon and hot water, good enough for me. I stayed at 5-star in KL, also had “visiting card” slipped under the door – I really wonder about the privacy at these places… Tsk! Tsk! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  21. hey.. I really thought it was you in the pic. So, do I get a kopi treat for thinking you are that slim ? ๐Ÿ˜€

Come, come…anytime…and more than coffee, no problem. I think I’m double or triple that size. Muahahahaha!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  22. Wah Arthur! I’m impressed at how you promote your town. But for us with no $$$ hor, you have extra rooms at your home ar? lolz We wouldn’t mind even if there is no bathroom attached! Rofl
    +Shameless Ant+

I’ve one room available…for 3 persons, no problem…and if more, they can sleep in the living room, in the computer room….no problem at all! How many of you coming? When? Have to arrange itinerary – tours…and makan timetable! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  23. Hahaha laughing at mom2kiddos..comment can echo her..Sibu got hotel wan? Oops STP gonna bar me from staying in Medan now muahaha.

Now let me delegate you to SPAM….CLICK!!! LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  24. It doesn’t matter if it’s not in Sibu centre because STP will come to the rescue! Just tell him where you want to go and consider it done ๐Ÿ˜› Right right? Hehee

Precisely…no problem at all! Sibu is a small place, no jam…anytime. Are you coming?

  25. aiyoo go to sibu so tempting..
nak cari makan find u, nak cari hotel find u..nak cari what else ni ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Nak taxi percuma…??? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. Woot, Sibu promotion! ๐Ÿ˜› wait up, i’m sure to come over one of these days.

    I’m right here waiting…..for youuuuu!!!! LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  27. Have never been to Sarawak and never thought of visiting Sibu but after reading ur blog I think I will make it a point to visit, so just to makan-makan. Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ™‚

Ooooo…welcome, welcome. Plus you’ll get to meet nice people like me. Hehehehehe!!! Do hop over sometime. ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Cheap and good! Penang ppl sure like. Hehe.

I want “double standard” room! LOL.

Oh? Why do you say so, doc? Penang people all cheapskate kah? Muahahahahaha!!!! I did not notice that – “double standard”! Should be a standard double room…but looking at the rampant speaking of Mandarin in Sibu, I’m not surprised that the English here is really going to the dogs! No need to laugh at the signs in China anymore – they’re all over the town here… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  29. Medan Hotel…nice & clean plus price reasonable. Won’t mind if it is not in the town centre as long as within a walking distance, there are places to eat and satisy my hunger.

All over the vicinity…and this are is one of the busiest. Lots of people, coffee shops always full… Not like the one in Sg Petani – had to walk so far to the town centre to find food to eat…and taxi RM10 even though it was actually near enough to walk. Cut-throats…those people there!

  30. wah that is really cheap!!! i hv a fren there, dun think i need to bunk in a hotel when i visit LOL.

You have? Anybody that I know? Your uni-mate?

  31. my unimate yup! ๐Ÿ˜€

I guess as much. I wonder if I know him… Many do not come back to work in Sibu though. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    1. they said work in sibu is “makan sendiri” (= means waiting to close shops) only LOL

Well, I got along quite well here, didn’t starve to death…and I think I’ve a lot more in my savings that those people working over there.

  32. this post should have a title of “Sibu vs Penang”. lol.
and the room rate is very affordable and good indeed!

No leh…I also linked Sg Petani hotels…and KL hotels in the post, not only the Penang one and not because of anything – just compare rooms and rates. Needless to say, KL and Penang hotels are bound to cost more even though they may be half as nice – higher standard of living, big cities and all…which is more than what I can say about Sg Petani but if you can get around, the food in Sg Petani is unbelievably cheap – may be cheaper than Sibu even. These are MY personal observations at those places – others may want to differ…everyone IS entitled to his/her own opinion.

  33. Aiyah, you can’t compare the price of Sibu hotel vs Penang hotel because price per sq feet of prime land in Sibu can never be as expensive as the one in Penang or London or Toyko……

The bottom line is – it is cheap here and it is expensive there…so it makes a lot more sense for them to come over and spend their weekend here…than for us, or them for that matter, to pay through our/their noses for something that is relatively not as nice…provided they can grab the zero-fares or special offers. I’m not saying that their rates are unreasonable or what – obviously they have their reasons to do what they do.

  34. One thing for sure, this hotel owner sure know about picking what sort of his TV for his hotel rrom because Plasma gives the best picture quality in dimmer enviroment like hotel rooms. Beat the crab out of LCD and also superior to LED.

Dunno these things – I never watch tv…and my missus, as long as got picture, got sound…she’s happy. LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  35. this medan hotel located at jalan pahlawan right? i heard that there is new medan hotel located at jalan wong king hoe. which one is better eyh? ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, they just opened that new one not too long ago:
The new one’s newer, of course – I have not dropped by myself but they say the rooms are big – RM98.00 nett per night with breakfast. Both are not located in the town centre but there are many shops all around, either one.

  36. thanks for info! i decided to choose this medan hotel as it is cheaper hehe. but then how to make reservations? i’d emailed them but still no answer

You can call or fax them: Tel: +6084-216161 Fax: +6084-215151
