Is this a woman thing or what? Do all of them stuff all the leftovers in the fridge or do they throw them away? On my part, if there is only a little bit left, I would just eat it all up…or if I’m way too full by then, I would get rid of it. Pretty wasteful, don’t you think?
Well, I peeped into the fridge the other morning to see what I could have for breakfast and I found some leftover rice – more than enough for a plate but probably, not enough for two. Then there was some leftover sambal petai (stink beans), about a spoonful of it…and there were some half a dozen button mushrooms and of course, there was the leftover long kiam hu (salted fish) from the other day.
I decided to use all of those to make my own fried rice so I peeled and sliced one big shallot and two cloves of garlic plus some chilies. I fried them in a bit of oil and then I threw in the salted fish, mashing it up and mixing it well with the other ingredients. Then I added the sambal petai and the mushrooms (sliced thinly) before putting in the rice. Lastly, I added an egg for some extra bulk so that I could come out with two plates of fried rice – one for me and one for my missus. I went on stirring everything together for a bit before it was ready to be serve…
There! No extra salt or msg added and it does look good, don’t you agree?
When I tried it, I was swept off my feet. It was so very nice – a whole lot nicer than any fried rice that I had cooked before and I’m sure you cannot get anything that is even half as nice outside…
Hmmm….I really must do it like this again sometime! Yum! Yum!
