Talkin’ ’bout a revolution…

Mention the name Napoleon and instantly, some people would think of the French Revolution. Others may start thinking of brandy or cognac…while I would recall that horrible pig character by the same name in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. Well, “Napoleon” here has got nothing to do with any of the three…

It’s actually a cake – a Napoleon coffee cake…

Tom's cake 1

My missus thought that last Sunday was Father’s Day, you see…so she went to this place in town and bought a cake…

Tom's cake 2

It seems that they do not ย bake the cakes here – they do that in Kuching…

Tom's cake 3

…and have them sent to their branch in Sibu…

Anyway, initially, when I heard what the cake was called, I assumed that the “Napoleon” in it would mean that there was liquor among the ingredients. However, when I googled it up to check, I found that it was actually the name of some kind of French pastry.

I guess that would be the hard layer on the outside and the one in between. I found it quite tasteless…and the cake itself seemed to me like ordinary plain cake, nothing really special and if I’m not wrong, the coffee was actually in the cream in between the pastry and the cake. My missus liked it though…and my in-laws too. They said it was not sweet – just right for them.

For one thing, considering the price, I would much sooner go for one of the tall cakes at this place, white chocolate macadamian or durian cream…or the Japanese baked cotton cheesecake that’s my favourite…or one from Marcus.

It’s the rich cream. Just one slice…and you know you’ve had more than enough. Same as those rich creamy cheesecakes – not a fan of those anymore. Just a bit, ok…not too much.

  8. Betul tu..I see the word “Napoleon” , I thought of Bonapart

+e, no? I did not think of Waterloo when I was writing this post until Eugene mentioned it in his comment. Otherwise, I would have used that for my post title – Abba’s song… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. Happy Father’s Day to you.. ur children are not around to celebrate for you but you have your missus to pamper you with such high class cake .. nice nice ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks. I’m not really into these over-commercialised celebrations…but people give, just take and eat lor. No complaints. Hehehehehe!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Wow..early father’s day celebration.

Cake look sgood, and somemore all the way fly from Kuching!!!! tsk tsk tsk.

Cake tastes no so good never mind, most important is the thought counts. So sweet of Mrs. Wee, at least she is gettting a cake for you.

So what are you getting for your hubby eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. Ok…that’s so nice of ur missus….i only buy cake for hubs on his birthday….since he dun fancy cakes..

So what are you buying him fro Father’s Day?

  13. The cake was tasteless eh? But it looked pretty good! So now that Father’s Day is this weekend, do you get to have another cake? LOL! I’d go for ice-cream cake! Never goes wrong! ๐Ÿ™‚

The cake was not tasteless – the pastry… Looks ok, tastes ok too but just not the kind I would like to eat again.

  14. tasteless? just ngam with coffee/tea, sedapnye ๐Ÿ˜€

Just the pastry – with the cake and the cream, it was ok…but unfortunately, not something that would get me jumping up and down asking for more. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  15. Tried this cake a few times and don’t like it. So I thought if I bake it using the best ingredients I could find, taste might different. Well, I haven’t changed my mind. I guess I like Asian style cakes better than coffee, tea cakes, tortes etc.
So nice your missus beli cake for you…mahal pulak tu!

See!!! I’m not the only one. They say the carrot cake from this place is very nice…but my missus does not know these things. Should have consulted me before she went to buy… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  16. tasteless? i think it looks simple, yet tempting ๐Ÿ™‚

Looks great. Just the pastry…like those “SkyFlakes” or what’s-the-name…that people like so much. Not me – I find them quite tasteless…and hard. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  17. STP, dreams can sometimes become reality!!. Maybe there will be another treat of good food this Sunday!!!….Keep finger crossed.

Harap…harap…! If you do not see any post on it, you know lah! LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  18. oh that is yummy yummy block of cake!! i like it.. hehe, infact i like all kinds of cakes lor, kekekeke ๐Ÿ˜€

I used to love cakes a lot…even sweet, sweet ones…but these days I’m more selective. Growing old, I guess. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  19. Everyone seems to have their personal favourites. As for me, all cakes I wallop! wakakakaka

You’re just like SK then…. No lah! Some cakes simply not worth the calories… LOL!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  20. hehe…but it’s the thought that counts ๐Ÿ™‚

we have “napoleones” here some kind of version from i guess the french pastry. but it’s smaller and not with chiffon cake. it’s like a croissant ๐Ÿ™‚

i love cakes…mostly choco flavored but plain chiffon cake is still the best for me ๐Ÿ™‚

I like Japanese baked cotton cheesecake…and fragrant nice butter cakes even if it’s sponge, I’d like too. None of the fancy stuff for me.

  21. What a huge cake! Sorry to say the cake doesn’t look tempting at all. Don’t know about the taste, though. You don’t like it? Anyway, very thoughtful of your missus :).
I don’t get cakes for mothers’ or fathers’ day. Reason being, nobody really fancy cakes and not so healthy also. I only get cakes for the kids – they love to blow the candles!

I love cakes! A few selected ones…and the ones my missus bakes herself. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  22. By the way, when I first read the title of your post and the first para, I thought you wanted to start some kind of a food revolution!

LOL!!! Could have been used for yesterday’s post – a cooking revolution…that flip pan!

  23. so will u be celebrating father’s day again? get other dishes this time! HAHAHAH. but i love cheesecakes, not so on those icing-laden ones.

Hopefully…and no cheesecake for me, I hope. Not crazy over those anymore…

  24. Wah, layered cake also got such fancy names nowadays ar? .. XD probably its good for the older generation because of the lower sugar content.. wait… you should like it ! ๐Ÿ˜› lol. kidding ya, dont get angry bro.

No, of course not… Must not be angry with celebrity blogger – later don’t want to drop by anymore. Muahahahahaha!!! No present for you…maybe this time next year, can get present already? Wink! Wink! LOL!!! What are you getting for your father? Going back to Penang?
