Can the can…

I still have a can of sardine in the pantry…and that one cost over RM5.00, Ayam Brand. It probably has been a few months since I bought it and I really wonder if the price has gone up even higher by now.

I love sardines, even the canned ones but now that they are getting kind of expensive, I might as well go for the fresh ones, nicely grilled like those served at this place

I have not been there for a long while for the simple reason that that cost RM8.50 and just as in the case of the canned ones, I am not sure whether the price has gone up or not.

The ones from my regular Malay food stall at Bandong may vary in price according to the size. This one cost me RM7.00…

For one thing, they’re cooked over hot burning charcoal so one can be sure there is no oil added and whatever oil that one may see would be the oil of the fish which people say is healthy.

They also give some very nice sambal (chilli dip) to go with the fish but the one I bought that day was not really that great as I found it a little bit dry…

Maybe they kept it above the charcoal pit for too long.

Still, RM7.00 for one big one – enough for two for one meal should be quite reasonable compared to a can of a few very much smaller ones considering that they’re not fresh plus it’s not that much cheaper too.

What do you all think?

  1. No fresh sardines for me… dunno how to gut them and the bones scares me! I’m ok with the canned ones… those in tomato sauce nice to make sandwich… but damn expensive these days… used to be able to buy Rm2 for big cans, but now? Dream on… at least Rm5. 😦

Canned ones – not nice…except Ayam or my favourite, Mariner. I buy the cooked sardines so no worries about having to gut them…and anyway, fishmongers here will do it for you, no problem. No small bones leh? Just like bawal hitam or kembong and the like….just the big one in the middle.

    1. I tercekik on ikan sardin when I was a kid… =.= sometimes got tiny bones. 😦 I only buy Ayam Brand and Marina…but expensive la these days. 😦

My two favourite brands! Aiyor…sardine, where go small bones? Like bawal, tenggiri… You must have some kind of phobia already…. Like my brother-in-law. Eat bawal, also choke on the bone…went to see specialist….and that day, choked on duck bone pula! Muahahahaha!!!! 😀

    2. me too…no fish with a lot of tiny bones for me. Also pernah tercekik. Had to telan the rice lump. Had sore throat for so long . After that scared of fish already. But now start to eat fish again provided it’s not much bones like talapia, bawal, siakap..nice to dip belacan sauce

Tilapia, got small bones lah…or smaller than sardine. You people better go and eat terubok…or those worth-their-weight-in-gold upriver fish from Kapit and get over your phobia! So many small bones, sure you will all break out in cold sweat but they are soooooo very nice!

  2. First thing that came to my mind was the RM7 fish.. it looked so straight and tidy on the plate… I thought in Sibu, fish and seafood are cheaper over there?
Yes, agree with you, Ayam Brand tin cans are getting more costly now.. i love yellow beans and they cost RM2.60 per tin now!

Not in Sibu. It is not near the sea…and those places by the sea, not really cheap…but very fresh. I hear people from Sibu would drive there to go and buy at higher prices, the local people all unhappy as the fishermen don’t want to sell to them, not so profitable.

  3. Suzi Quatro says go get em for free time to go fishing..

Follow Pete, he goes fishing all the time…but maybe you prefer fishing for the two-legged ones. LOL!!! 😉

  4. actually i like sardines and mackerel, just pan fried till crispy outside, and put some salt to taste.. simple but yet very delicious.. this is what you call less is more~~ 🙂

Yup…I like mackerel too…but it is getting very expensive these days. One little slice can be RM1.00-2.00 even at this cheap stall that I frequent…

  5. The fish definitely looks nice, like those soba fish dish!!

    Have a pleasant weekend!

Nice. I love fish…as long as there are none of those small bones. You too, have a nice weekend.

  6. Perfecto!…the fish looks good. I love sardines too, be it fresh or canned as well as kembong fish.

For fresh sardines or kembong I would prefer to have them deep fried and eat with chilli padi in soya sauce…yummy!…

Canned sardines are best if cooked with bombay onions and chilli and squeeze a lime over it….drooling!…….

They have kembong too – but I usually buy the deep fried ones, very nicely marinated with some kind of sambal. RM1.00 each…and RM1.50 if they are quite big. Yum!!!

  7. Talking about grilled fish, have you ever tried the ones at the pasar malam? I’ve always been tempted to try them but the less than sanitary presentations (cooked food openly displayed to the public) always put me off. Your link brought me to your older posts. Reading about Kiaw Siong made me sigh with nostalgia. The good old days!

I never tried those. Once I used to but the grilled terubok and sardine from the stalls at Kpg Dato (now at Taman Harmoni)…and when I came across a sardine with maggots inside, that was it. Never bought from there ever again. The original Kiaw Siong moved to the shop across the road but I heard it has just closed down as the landlord wanted to increase the rent. Dunno if it has moved elsewhere…

  8. i like fish…sardines my favourite too…if i going to sibu on 4th nex mth ur treat ok… 😛

What? 4th April? Ching Ming kah? Aiyor…I’ll be in Penang, my niece’s wedding…. Everybody knows about this already… You haven’t been reading my posts kah? 😦

  9. the fish looks very good but I’m scared to eat such small fishes cos their bones are very tiny.

Another one – no small bones lah…like tenggiri (mackerel), only cheaper.

  10. Quite some time I have not taken canned sardine. Think I’ll have it this weekend. I like to add lots of onion to the canned sardine 🙂
The ikan bakar looks yummy and I like it with lots of sambal belacan! (salivating already)…

Ya, me too. Will finish off that can of sardines in the pantry one of these days. Lots of onions and chillies. Yum!!!

  11. ah ha, i cooked sardine for my lunch, not fresh one,
    canned cukup lah 😉

I skipped lunch as I had a lot of roti canai this morning. My can of sardines lives to see another day. LOL!!! 😀

  12. I love sardine and now Fearles love canned sardine too! Now you remind me i have go and stock up some. LOL!

I love grill fish, but not fresh sardine or kampung fish or those “small type”. LOL I scare the smell. To me small fish always got “smell”. I don’t mind sting ray, but i still prefer my bawal putih.

Bawal putih…I think RM30 a kg now. Foochows prefer those, including my father – does not eat bawal hitam and most of those fish!!!

  13. I prefer the canned one. Because I can straight away eat it without even have to cook it. 😀

Ya…lazy eh? But actually, that’s true. No need to fry and make a mess in the kitchen. 😉

  14. Canned sardine are very convenient. Just recently, I make sardine sandwich for breakfast!..and it tastes just great…hehehe!…

Yup…canned food can be so convenient but with the rising prices, will have to think twice about eating them. 😦

  15. i dun like sardines! but that one look good!

Somehow that one did not have the sardine smell….but I like the smell and the sweetness and “lemak” (oily) when it is really very fresh!!! 😦

  16. Cheap! Looks good too though a bit dry.. better than the Ikan bakar that I had before this.. RM10 for a fish much smaller than yours, and it’s not even ‘bakar’! more like steamed fish…

Yup…I had better ones before from the same stall. Prefer the fried ones though – the kembong and they’re much cheaper…

  17. Wow! You are such a guru of the thrifty!
I shall learn as much as I can from you, dear sir!

Not thrifty…smart spending but sometimes I do fall into temptation. 😦

  18. Fresh and charcoal grilled better la! More sedap!

Aha! Finally, somebody who does not agree with the rest. You certainly know your fish! Thumbs up! 😉

  19. oh my it’s midnight here and you made me crave for fish…:)

I love fish dishes especially if it comes with a chili/calamansi/soy sauce 🙂

I love fresh fish, can eat just like that…otherwise, it maybe bland or tasteless and I would have to eat with some kind of sauce.

  20. Price ok lah but I am not into sardin fish….too many bones..LOL!

Bones? Where? I really wonder why people kept saying there are many bones and yet it does not seem to be the case to me. Our sardines here different from your sardines there kah?

  21. Ching ming is 5th April…I thot u say u goin pnen bgining of mth n I thot u wil b back by then alrdy…I’m old alrdy so can’t blame oldman forgotten 😉

5th, beginning of the month also mah…. Going on the 1st, back late at night on the 4th and back to work on the 5th. 😦

  22. I guess it is the tin cans plus the processing that makes canned sardines expensive. Fresh sardines have none of those and that makes it cheaper.

Dunno… Probably. I don’t meddle with commodities so I dunno whether tin prices are rising or not – only know oil and gold, from what I heard people talking about them.

    1. I have read in the news that the price of tin cans are also increasing and that is why all canned goods are affected with this price increase.

Probably…but these business people – any small reason, they will jack up the price…and very often, much more than they should. 😦
