Edelweiss…

I bet a lot of people know this song, especially if they are my age. It was in the movie, “The Sound of Music”, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical set in Austria based on the lives of the Von Trapp family singers. However, I wonder how many actually know what Edelweiss is though. Well, if you don’t, Edelweiss is in fact an Alpine flower. You can click this link to read more about it.

Anyway, I’m talking about this because I once met a man from that country – Austria. He married the sister of the boss of that chicken rice shop that I frequent – Chopsticks and was in Sibu for Chinese  New Year at the time. He was setting up a pizza place here, Peppino’s Pizza, which lasted for quite a long while and Melissa actually liked the pizzas there more than those at Pizza Hut. Unfortunately, it has since closed down.

Well, I met him again the other day at his brother-in-law’s place and this time around, he was selling cakes – fruit cake and carrot cake…

Carrot cake 1

I bought a loaf of the latter to try…

Carrot cake 2

…and I must say that it was very nice with the fruits and the nuts in it plus a hint of cinnamon. Yum! Yum!

I thought I would save that for Chinese New Year but unfortunately, it’s all  gone now…and at RM17.00 a loaf, I’d probably go for something that will cost a bit less…unless some kind and generous soul gets the hint. Wink! Wink! LOL!!!

What 20s? When I saw the movie in the cinema, I was still in secondary school… You must have watched the video tape…or vcd – no dvd or Bluray, your time, I’m sure… LOL!!! 😀

    1. Tsk tsk tsk… it was tape. My zaman mana lah ada VCD, DVD and blueray those… itu budak budak moden aje yang tengok. LMAO!

You also tape era kah? So old already? Muahahahaha!!!! Well, I saw it in a cinema – these days, the young kids may not know what that is – only know cineplex. 😦

      1. I’m old. I used to go to Cathay cinema with my dad… my first movie was Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. LOL!

That’s pretty new… So you cannot possibly be so old. I can’t remember my first movies… Lots of Hercules, Maciste and Goliath…and cowboy movies too. I remember how people used to clap when the good guys are winning…. So funny. Muahahahaha!!!!

  2. Oooppss… not Edelweiss in the vid. Kena tipu liao… aiyaksss! LOL!

Hahahaha!!! It seems that most of the videos with songs from the movies under copyright control. You will have to watch on youtube…cannot link.

    1. Tsk… really kena tipu loh this morn. I tot it’s Edelweiss… *pengsan*

Hehehehehe!!! If I were to post a song from the movie, I would probably link “The Lonely Goatherd” – real cute, that one! 🙂

  3. u wait ha…just wait I buy for u but long long wait lar…lol…btw tat movie reli nice..

I’ll wait…long long time also, I’ll wait. Hahahahaha!!! You like the movie? Gee! I’m surprised. ROTFL!!! 😀

  4. gosh STP! RM17 for a loaf of yummy carrot cake is not expensive la!! hahaha..even for a single earner like me, i rather pay for quality than for cheap cakes which are dry and out.. 🙂
Yes, I watched the Sound of Music many times till I cannot count.. it is still one of the best entertaining musical shows of all times, like MamaMia, Grease….

Hah!!! That’s why we get along so well – we share the same interests…ummmm…except badminton. Muahahahaha!!!! Hmmm…maybe I should go back there and buy a loaf or two – just wait and see first. Still hoping. LOL!!! 😀

  5. What to say, i also admire this song too 🙂 and movie too. I think i have watch more than 20x through my life times averaging once a year haha

Good grief! I have the original vcd – the box set but I don’t think I’ve watched it so many times – definitely less than 10. 🙂

  6. I baked a carrot cake just once. my girl asked me to bake again but I don’t hv the time.

Is she coming home for Chinese New Year? And your son too? Good time to bake – it is things like this that will keep them coming home. If you buy, they can always buy their own…and in KL, they can buy even nicer ones some more. 😉

  7. i got the hint but am too far away to get one for you! haha

Excuses…excuses!!! Poslaju – dijamin sampai esok hari…still in time for Chinese New Year. Hehehehehehe!!! 😀

  8. Aiyo this song very old liao…….for old daddy like me sing with a guitar wan! ha ha ha!

Ya…I used to play it on the guitar – those days when I knew how to play, all forgotten now…but it was not because I liked the song so much but because it was one of the easier songs to play. Muahahahaha!!!! 😀

    1. My dad can play most of the songs in The Sound of Music by using harmonica. 😀 Unfortunately, the daughter is musically illiterate. LOL!

Guess you inherited the wrong genes… Hehehehehe!!!

  9. Edelweiss. Would you believe when I was younger around 10 years old I would cycle around the neighborhood with my friends and sing songs from the sound of music while cycling. Haha! Thinking back, we must have looked silly.

How does a carrot cake taste? Made of carrots? Think I’ve never tried one yet.

Yes, you can see the shredded carrot in the cake. People usually serve this with cream cheese sauce or rum sauce. Maybe I should go back and buy a loaf or two…andmake the sauce to serve it with… Still hoping but sadly, no offers yet. Sobs!!! 😦

Gosh! You and your friends must have looked like the Von Trapp children in the movie. LOL!!! 😀

    1. Too bad I swear off baking cakes…else would have make and send to u. tsk tsk tsk… make cake, tak pernah jadi… always keras like batu! Give up liao!

How come I’m not surprised? Muahahahaha!!!! 😀

    2. The hillsssss are alive… with the sound of music!!!! Omg, what’ll I do to turn back time!

How do I get one cake for you? Gagagagaga

You want my mailing address? Dijamin sampai esok hari…still in time. Muahahahahaha!!! 😀

  10. I like everything with tinge of cinnamon, have yet try any carrot cake, lol (had enough carrot when I was young, since my mom used to stuff us with carrots)!

I used to like sound of music very much, one of my childhood favourite Disney movie!

Don’t think this was Disney. Did they show it on the Disney Channel? I do remember seeing it on tv a couple of times.

Not really a fan of carrots myself but I don’t mind carrot cake…

    1. I’m positive it’s a Walt Disney production, I watched this numerous time when I was a kid! ^-^

It was originally a 20th Century Fox production…but I don’t know if Disney bought over the rights to the film in the later years or perhaps Disney bought over 20th Century Fox? That is also a possibility.

  11. Fall into your Trapp no got Edelweiss one but otherwise..love the movie. Aiyo easy come easy go buy two loaves lah haha. tQ

Two loaves = RM34.00! Aiyor!!!! If two loves, ok lah… Hehehehehehe!!!!

  12. The first time i tried carrot cake was at Secret Recipe. That’s when i fell in love with it. Suprising, i love the cake to get heated. Nice…

I’ve never tried the Secret Recipe one. I wonder if it’s more expensive.Maybe I’ll just drop by these few days to check…

  13. I always like carrot cake with cheese topping. We have a cousin who can make vv nice carrot cake…I saw in FB….haha.

Yup…very nice. I’ve eaten that before…once when I was in Kuching with Melissa.

  14. me love carrot cake too. at rm17 consider cheap la. a slice at secret recipe cost rm4.50 ka . hehehe
no one send to you ka?? i hvnt work yet , no money leh… next time lah

Ok…hopefully next time, when already working, you will not forget me hor? LOL!!! 😀

  15. When I visited Austria during my Europe tour after my graduation, the tour leader brought us to the lake where it was supposed to be one of the movie location. It was such a wonderful place and I wonder if I will have a chance to go to Europe again. Too expensive to go from Malaysia.

Yup…that Alpine part of Europe must be really beautiful. Can see that in the film. Don’t think I will ever get to go there on a visit – too expensive, can’t afford…and too old to travel so far. 😦

  16. Carrot cake..this one look a bit different from the carrot cake that we usually had. This one i can see the shredded carrot in between, or is it all the while there are shredded carrot in it and i didn’t notice, just chomp it down my throat? hahahhahah

Anyway, i prefer carrot to carrot cake. 😛

Maybe carrot in some cakes blended so can only see specks. This one, shredded…so can see the carrots clearly. Nice. I don’t like carrots – just the cake.

  17. Rm17 is a bit expensive, but if it’s really good, nvm la!

Yup…it’s good. Maybe I should go back and get a couple of loaves. There are nicer cakes available but of course, they are just as expensive or even more so. The cheaper ones are usually not worth the calories.

  18. the song nice. 🙂 n the fruit cake yummy! whoaa u finished it all?!

No lah…I bagi some and took to my parents’ house for them to try. Everybody liked it…

  19. See, I think it’s time that you learn how to bake so that you don’t have to wait 😀 If you missed out making the new year resolution, you still have time. Use the Chinese New Year calendar 😀

LOL!!! Will take my sweet time after my daughter has gone back to NZ. Trial and error and by the time she comes home again at the end of the year, I hope to be able to bake some nice cakes for her… 😉

  20. i like the 16 going on 17 song of the sound of music and also favorite things (if those are their actual title hehe…:) )

that carrot cake is somehow expensive but if it’s consumed that fast then maybe it’s worth it, too 🙂

I guess it was worth it…but I would think twice about buying it again. These days, have to be more careful with money… 😦 Yup, you got the titles correct, all right.

  21. I have never tried any carrot cake before…and I don’t think I will…I don’t know…perhaps I am not a rabbit. :p

    You’re not? Then are you a goat…..with a goatee? Muahahahaha!!!! 😀

  22. My fav. movie till now……I watched it so many many times and love all the songs.

Good stuff never dies. They live on…and on…and on! 🙂
