It’s no secret…

Well, it’s no secret that Secret Recipe’s cakes are very nice…and expensive.

My daughter had left for NZ when they opened an outlet here, so the other day, the two of us dropped by the place…

Mel @ Secret Recipe. Sibu

…and she had the tiramisu (RM6.50)…

…while I had the durian (RM7.00)…

They do not seem to have this at every outlet. So far, I only had that at their Village Mall outlet in Sungai Petani, Kedah…and I do like it a lot. My daughter’s not a durian lover though…and thus, would not touch it with a 10-foot pole.

This was my 3rd visit to the outlet in town – the first time, to buy some of the cakes home to enjoy…and on my second visit, I had their shepherd pie which was a real disappointment – nowhere near mine, to say the least!

On all my previous visits, I never paid much attention to the prices. Sure, it was a bit expensive but then again, we would not be dropping by too often, so it would not be much of a big deal really. However, this time around I kept the receipt from the cash register and guess what I discovered! The drinks are more expensive than the cakes, believe it or not!

I had the iced long black – RM7.50…

…and somehow or other, that name never fails to conjure all kinds of funny images in my head. LOL!!!

My daughter had the iced caffe mocha – RM9.50…

Good grief!

But I did notice a promotion going on right now where you can order something and you can get a drink free. I think I’ll go for that next time …or I’ll just eat and not drink! Tsk! Tsk!!!

With the plus-plus (taxes), the bill that day came up to RM35.10. My missus cooked these crabs for lunch that afternoon…

Mrs STP's fried crabs

…and I think she paid RM30 for one and a half kg of the crustaceans.

She also dished out this very nice plate of fried abalone mushroom salad…

…which I’m sure would not come up to RM5.00.

For that same kind of money, which do you think you would like to have? I definitely wouldn’t want to go for the cakes and drinks, that’s for sure…

  1. Melissa can kawan with Auntie Cleff la… LOL… Auntie Cleff hates durian…durian season come liao, she will find a way to get rid of those durian from the orchard… will fast fast sumbat to her kawans! Eeeewwwww!

Not crazy about durians either. Will eat if somebody buys for me…but I love the cakes (the creamy ones including the swiss rolls, not those Tan Kim Hock’s durian dodol – Ewek!!!), the durian pancakes and the Thai durian pulut dessert. Yum!!!!

  2. Oh yea… speaking of Secret Recipe cakes… I used to have the hots for their cakes… especially their blueberry cheesecake… but ever since I’ve been fed with Cyn’s cake… I no longer crave for SR’s cakes.

No comment! I’ve yet to taste them – only had the choc chip cookies…

  3. SR’s cakes have become sugar sponges.
A pale contrast to their pre-franchise days!

I’d rather go for small-time passionate cake makers than SR’s factory-made junk.

Call it what you want but the cakes are still nicer than the bakeries we have in town – the tall cakes, I mean…unless you want to book in advance, then you can have nice(r) cakes like the ones from this guy named Marcus. As for the chilled cheese cakes, I hear the ones at Tanah Mas are nicer…and after 6 or 7 pm, they give 30% discount.

Still, it’s the only place here while people can have coffee or two and enjoy a slice of cake and sit and chat for hours. Maybe that’s why the drinks are more expensive – some may just order the drinks and nothing else and occupy the table for the whole day. There are cakes at some hotels and even those are not necessarily nice or nicer…unlike at other places where you have other options e.g. there are Tom’s and Nee’s in Kuching.

  4. Bananaz would go for the crabs *yum* do not have sweet tooth for cakes..hehe. Wah in small town like Sg Petani is RM120 for a room? SP Inn is quite daring. tQ

I do not stay there anymore…as they’re even more expensive now – after they renovated and extended the place – now a lot bigger. At that rate today, you may get a room in a shoplot hotel with a toilet that is not even big enough for me… Real expensive. We get very nice ones here for as low as RM60….

  5. So far commercial cakes are concerned, Secret Recipe is the one.. once awhile my kids like to drop by there to savour the different types of cheese cakes etc… but as for me, I still prefer Elinluv’s baking.. hahaha…

Humph!!! No need to rub it in….. I’ve yet to taste Elin’s out-of-this-world cooking and baking!!! Maybe I should drop by Ipoh again when on my Penang trip in a few days time. Elin…Elin, my good friend…what say you? LOL!!! 😀

  6. I think cheese cakes from Coffee Bean etc are more expensive.

Never mind, let other people make money once in a while … supporting the economy mah!

Ya…I had a coffee and an apple crumble at the LCCT outlet once, RM20.00 – never again! Hmmm…must support oneself first – a fool and his money are soon parted, so must spend wisely. 😉

  7. Yes, as i mentioned in my blog before, the cake at SR is increasing tremendously. Therefore i seldom drop by for cakes instead opt for doughnuts more nowadays…LOL..But then sugar level content is so high…kkekekkekek

Not a fan of donuts, no…thank you. I’d rather have cakes and don’t like it too sweet either (like those overseas)…but can’t be taking too much sweet stuff – thank goodness I don’t like chocolates…and not crazy about icecream either – just once in a while, ok.

  8. Arthur, next time you come to Penang, i will introudce a friend of mine name ah Hin, he makes wonderful cakes, and mostly he supplies to those famous outlets,,i can guarantee you, it shall be really worth every dime,i am not a cake lover but once i tried his,,, going back for you lah

Oh? So good? Ummmm…my birthday just passed, can still celebrate. Hint! Hint! Muahahahahaha!!!! 😀

  9. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh my… sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeets
I love the Tiramisu… we actually made one last week…I love it when it’s frozen yum yum… it tastes like ice cream…

Durian for cake?? Durian is the ugly smelling fruit right??? looks like a jack fruit???

Oh my… the Iced caffe Mocha looks so good

Anyway.. I haven’t taken my brekfast yet… and your post makes me feel more hungry haha

Have a great day Arthur…(that’s your real name right?)

Yup, that’s my name… Hmmm…looks like you’ve a sweet tooth, love all the sweet stuff. Yup…durian is the “ugly-smelling” fruit but with a thorny hard shell, not actually like a jackfruit. You have a great day too! 🙂

  10. But… cakes are a good sugar boost once in a while!! 🙂 Yes, the drinks are more expensive that’s why I never order drinks at Secret Recipe.. Warm water is fine with me! LOL! I’d rather buy more an extra cake than a drink! 😛

Yalor…and still get change! Tsk! Tsk! Never actually checked the prices, must look properly next time…

  11. Ohhh, durian durian cake is Juan Juan’s favourite, I prefer chocolate chip walnut. We are hvg the promotion here too, dine in with a cake then we’ll get our complementary coffee or tea. ^-^

Nice crab dish, have a nice day!

Aha…somebody has the same taste as me! 😉

  12. long time i never had SR cakes already, after they increase the price from RM4+ to RM6+ per slice now. I think their standard drop too,now i would go for other instead of SR.

Love Melissa picture, she look very fresh and good, maybe some different on her hair and also put on some weight?

I suppose KL, you have a whole lot of choices… Yup, she looks much better than when she was in Sg Petani.

  13. Agree with ah^kam_koko that SR’s cakes are much better prior to their franchise days. Although I do not have a sweet tooth, once a while I do crave for a slice of cake. And I mean a rich, delicious, taste-like-homemade kind.
With reference to your post, I’ll go for the crabs anytime. There’s a restaurant here that serves thirty different types of crab dishes. You must try, if you are a crab person 😛

Well, in Sibu, we do not have much of a choice…so beggars can’t be choosers. As a matter of fact, my missus makes very good cakes…but more often than not, she’s not in the mood. 😦 …..There is/was a restaurant in Miri like that too – dunno how many ways to cook crab…and one here too – VERY popular but the crabs are reared ones – quite cheap but not really nice. I wouldn’t bother going for that…

  14. Arthur,
I would never complained again on the Malaysian food prices..no matter how expensive,it is still so much cheaper than overseas.Long Black…hehehe…hubby’s fave drink, only because he’s too kedekut to pay for a short black!

Gosh! Even these are cheap? Mustn’t convert…dollar to ringgit, I’m sure you may find stuff like these much cheaper over there.

  15. Aiseh STP! I tot u r gonna blog about Victoria Secret’s latest release! 😛

Not me…with my shape and size, blog about Queen Victoria more likely! Muahahahaha!

  16. i have SR today. hehehe! i never order their drink. 3pm to 5pm got free tea or coffee ma. hehehe. i only love cheesecake there. dislike the tiramisu and the durian @_@

Smart! Now that I know that their drinks are expensive, I will be smarter next time… Get the free drinks, or don’t drink! 😦

  17. wah… look great look nice i miss those food.

the last photos…. WAH…. I cannot tahan anymore.

Russia? Lots of vodka there… You can drink to forget… Muahahahaha!!!! 😀

  18. I still love their cakes, especially those with cheese. Yeap, the shephard pie was truly a disappointment!

Next time, just tau pau the cakes, don’t buy their drinks. Go home and make a cup of Nescafe and go with the cakes. It should give you an ambience of SR.

Don’t really like cheesecakes anymore… Yup! Next time, buy home or don’t drink…just eat – unless they have some promo, giving free drinks.
