Keep on trying…

My daughter first tried the Uncle Miki’s Japanese baked cheesecake a number of years ago when we were on holiday in Singapore. They had a stall at the entrance of Cold Storage (Centrepoint) and I bought one back to the hotel. She loved it and after that time, I bought it again once at their counter at Isetan, the supermarket at the basement in Lot 10, KL but she said it was not as nice.

We have had some pale imitations at the local bakeries here but it was only quite recently that we found one that we really liked at this bakery. If you remember, I mentioned in my recent post that we bought one not-very-big oval-shaped one and it cost RM14.00 – definitely not cheap, that’s for sure.

Anyway, my daughter and her friends tried making it in Wellington, New Zealand but something went wrong. When they took it out of the oven, the sides sank…so in the end, they had something that looked like a flying saucer…

She said that it tasted all right but it was not the same. Later, they tried to bake it again and it seemed that it was even worse than the first time.

Now that she’s home for the holidays, she was determined to give it another try and with the supervision and guidance from the mum, she was quite sure she would get it right and she did…

It certainly looked good but after it had cooled, the surface seemed to have wrinkled a bit…

But it did not matter as the cake was just right and tasted really good…

Well, if anyone’s interested, you can get the recipe from this link or this one and give it a try. Good luck!

  1. look good. i dun dare bake now bcoz of prior fail attempt. hahaha

Perhaps it will be ok if you try again? My problem is I can’t follow recipes – keep reading and forgetting (Old man mah!) and keep reading just to make sure…and in the end, get everything mixed up plus I will hop, step and jump – will not follow the recipe faithfully – sure disaster.

    1. Hahaha… if agak agak, kenot bake cakes… but strange enuff… my late grandma oso agak agak when she bake cakes and cookies… everything throw inside…but her cake and cookies turned out very nice. And when the DIL and the daughter ask her how to bake those stuff, she will say… one bag of this, one lump of that, a handful of these… a dash of those… *PENGSAN*… I oso asked her before… and she will tell me the same thing. Ishhh! 😦 Now she’s gone. Nobody knows how to make those cakes, cookies and puddings she used to make, cuz there’s no proper recipe for us to follow/modify.

That’s why… My mum also. She will know by the look or the texture of the mix…and way back then, guess who the “blender” was! Me…with a spring with a handle and I had to go poing…poing…poing non-stop till she said it was ok! Every Christmas, every Chinese New Year – beat the eggs like fluffy enough…and in went the sugar…and then add the flour etc…etc…etc… Maybe that’s why I don’t bake cakes – mental block already.

      1. my friend’s auntie also like that. when ask for recipe she said agak2 only, never measured. plan to go her house disturb when she baking for cny. hahaha

That is what I will tell you if you ask for the recipe for anything that I cook. Muahahahahaha!!!! Oops…I told Shereen I will cook masak hitam with specific measurements and post for her to follow… Hehehehehe!!! 😉

  2. Haihhh… if it’s me who tried… sure jadi negro cake wan! LOL!

Same-same…half kati = 8 tahil. The pot and the kettle, both black. Hehehehehe!!! 😉

    1. Hahaha…. I’ll just leave the baking to my mum and Cyn. Tak berani la…if cake hangus oredi cannot eat leh… not like chicken or beef, still can scrape out the hangus part. (But sometimes the hangus part of meat of chic is the nicest to eat)LOL!

I tried making fruit cake before for my father’s bday… dunno why… the cake tarak ‘naik’. Ishh… dono wud I din put til the cake turn out to be ‘heavy’ and not fluffy. 😦

Fruit cake! I wouldn’t even attempt a simple butter cake. Maybe you did not beat it enough…or your butter was cold…or your eggs were not fresh…or you did not use self-raising etc etc etc…so many do’s and don’ts, I really pening – that’s why I leave all the baking to my missus. 😉

  3. Looks like M is being trained well by her mother. Cake looks excellent. I love Japanese cheesecake. Here they sell them frozen but still nice. Will have to try that RM14 one. My mother will say, chiak poh.

Ya…the older folks would find that so utterly shocking. They certainly would not spend their money like that…but no point over-scrimping and saving. More to life than that, I’m sure. I do believe in a bit of pampering sometimes…but of course, must save enough for a rainy day. 🙂

    1. Yes, no point. Work hard and play hard, my motto in life. So not crazy about Kini? It does have his signature sound.

It’s ok. To each his own…I still prefer my two faves. LOL!!! 😉

  4. Cool! Wrinkle thing is fine I think.
Care to share the recipe? 🙂
Seems like you are feeding your daughter well.

It was o.k….. You can click one of the links at the end of the post for the recipe. I think I printed the 1st one for my daughter to use…but if I’m not mistaken, both recipes are identical. Good luck.

  5. Yum…that looks good although ada sikit wrinkle…the cooling process too fast.Dulu–dulu punya kuih and cake can agak-agak la…my mom also like that. If they use cup,you can be sure your cup and their cup tak sama unless you inherit the same cup or buy the exact same cup. No thermometer la, kitchen aid and what not…in fact not even oven. My mom’s oven was made from sabut and then later on only got the round like flying saucer oven. With all our modern stuff, somehow our cakes and kuih still do not taste quite the same as the orang dulu-dulu ones…theirs just got that extra flavour, texture, fragrant etc. Sayang I never learn to make a single cake or kuih from my late mom…I never had the patience as again her recipe she will just rattle on,’tepung dalam setengah kampit, gula setengah mangkuk, telur lu suka la berapa biji lu mo masuk…agak-agak la (the magic word)’ ..and I’ll go ‘…huh?!?’…lol.

Ah…the expert speaks. Cooling too fast eh? Thank goodness my mum had an oven – England made, my dad bought one for her. But I inherited a copper oven – the one where you have a wood fire underneath and burning hot charcoal on the lid…and use two sticks to poke into the rings at the sides to lift the lid. My grandma and her daughters used that to make pineapple tarts in the good ol’ days for Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Ya, my daughter made dadih and she used a mug instead of a cup, so it turned out a bit too watery. I told her to use a measuring cup next time. Ah well…we learn new things every day.

    1. If any of my cakes… or food turned as nice as Melissa’s…. I’ll be screaming Hallelujah! LMAO! I’m completely hopeless in making food look good! Hahahahaha!

      That, I can believe… Muahahahahahahaha!!!! ROTFL!!! 😀

  6. Baking is more satisfying then getting them cakes from the bakeries, especially when we know the taste that we want 🙂

Bravo to your daughter for all the attempts 🙂 I think Man-D is making this cake too …. which reminds me that this is one cake of hers that I haven’t tried …

It is always so satisfying when cooking and things turn out so well. That’s one of the pleasures in doing it yourself. Ya…how’s Man-D? She has turned pro…it seems, so hers must be really nice. Must get her to bake me one should I happen to hop over to KK again… 😉

    1. I’m sure that can be arranged 🙂 And yes, all of her cakes are top quality in taste and decoration hehe …

Yes, saw the photos she shared on Facebook – really really nice!😉

  7. I love baked cheesecake and I saw this photo in Mel’s fb,yum! But I won’t be baking since my family’s taste so diversified, easier to go bakery n get 1 slice of each to our liking instead…..

And talking about slices, Melissa and I went to Secret Recipe yesterday…and had the cakes. Yum! Yum! LOL!!! 😉

  8. UFO from NZ? Great inspiration..never give up..about the wrinkled part can iron or not? haha. tQ

Gee! How come I never thought of that? Now I’ll know what to do next time… Hehehehehe!!!!

  9. UFO or not, you have another good cook at your own home… dont have to worry or sob anymore when u see Elin’s cakes in my posts! 🙂

Aiyor…Elin like real pro, how to compare!!! Sigh…I wonder when I will ever get to taste her gorgeous cakes. Drool! 😦

  10. 😦 this post gave me the crave for secret recipe’s cheese cakes. :(…

Went there yesterday for the cakes – not a fan of their chilled and set cheese cakes though – too rich…after a bite or two, can’t take anymore. 😦

  11. wow!your daughter’s cake looks nice to me.Actually i also long time want to search for this Japanese Cheesecake recipe, really thanks a lot for sharing the recipes with us.

Good luck. It is very very nice…so go ahead! Give it a try! 😉

  12. I used to bake…when my mommy was still here. 😦

You did? I guess you learnt how to do it from your mum so you know how to do it now? That’s good! Something you inherited from her and should be cherished in her memory… 🙂

  13. The Cheesecake surely looks wonderful. From the look, I know that it must have tasted heavenly.

Yes, it was very nice…nicer than the best at the bakeries but I would much sooner go and buy – so lazy mah. 😦

  14. oh i really want to learn how to bake… but we do not have oven at home… yikes

Working already? If you are, then you can buy one – some are quite affordable and can last a long time. I find it more useful than a microwave…and definitely cheaper than those blackberries or iphones.
